Introduction: Tertiary syphilis, a late form of the disease with neurologic, cutaneous, and cardiovascular manifestations, is rarely seen in the United States in modern times. Also called the “great imitator,” syphilis tends to mimic other disease processes, which can lead to a delay in proper diagnosis and treatment. Case: We present the case of a 59-year-old woman who presented for evaluation of possible squamous cell carcinoma of the vulva. After multiple inconclusive biopsies and extensive workup with multiple providers, she was instead found to have cutaneous and neurologic tertiary syphilis. A correct diagnosis was delayed in this patient due to …

Cord Blood Troponin I Levels: Biomarker Evidence Of Fetal Cardiac Injury In Intrahepatic Cholestasis Of Pregnancy, Itamar Futterman, Hitangee Jain, Rodney Mclaren, Jonathan Mays
Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Faculty Papers
BACKGROUND: Intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy has been linked to sudden stillbirth. The suddenness of the stillbirths in these cases have led clinicians to suspect that the pathogenesis of stillbirth in women with intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy is not related to asphyxia but rather to an undefined etiology. One leading hypothesis relates certain bile acid metabolites to myocardial injury. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine whether cord blood troponin I levels are increased in fetuses born to mothers with a diagnosis of intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy. STUDY DESIGN: A prospective, case-control study was performed at a single institution …

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a hormonal disorder that is common among women who are of reproductive age, most commonly in ages between 15 and 44 years of age (Moran et al., 2010). While the exact cause of PCOS is unknown, it is widely believed by many experts that genetic factors including excess levels of insulin and excess androgen are attributing factors (Moran et al., 2010) . Women with PCOS experience several different signs and symptoms including; infrequent or prolonged menstrual periods leading to infertility and the development of cysts (Iatrakis et al., 2006). Some other common symptoms of PCOS …

Development Of An Endometriosis Toolkit To Support Clinicians In Providing Quality Care For Women, Rachel Hasbun
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects
Abstract
Background: Endometriosis is the abnormal growth of endometrium-like tissue outside the uterine cavity, affecting approximately 11% of women in the United States during their reproductive years. Diagnostic challenges stem from its varied clinical presentations, reliance on laparoscopy for definitive diagnosis, and limited awareness among practitioners and patients, potentially leading to diagnostic delays of up to 13 years.
Problem: The complexities of diagnosing endometriosis in primary care and specialty settings, combined with limited provider awareness and a lack of comprehensive resources, hinder timely and accurate identification. This leads to suboptimal treatment and care for women affected by the condition.

Postpartum cardiomyopathy (PPCM), also known as peripartum cardiomyopathy is a rare form of heart failure (HF) that occurs in the late stages of pregnancy or in the early postpartum period. For it to be classified as PPCM, it must occur in the absence of another identifiable cause for HF and have left ventricular (LV) systolic dysfunction with an LV ejection fraction (LVEF) less than 45%. Here we present the case of a 46-year-old female G3P2 presented 5 days postpartum cesarean section delivery in acute respiratory distress where point of care ultrasound was used for assessment of the lungs to visualize …

Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled structures that may be defined as simple or complex and are often discovered incidentally on imaging. Their etiology can range from physiologically normal (such as follicular or luteal cysts) to ovarian malignancies. They are more common in the reproductive years secondary to endogenous hormonal production however may also occur at any age. Simple cysts more commonly occur among all age groups; mixed cystic and solid and completely solid ovarian lesions however have rates of increased malignancy. The most independent risk factor is age; therefore, post-menopausal women should have proper follow-up secondary to this risk. Some risk …
