In our bodies, the main source of vitamin D is linked to our skin's exposure to sunlight. It can also be obtained through foods that contain vitamin D. Cushing's disease is a disorder characterized by supraphysiologic levels of circulating cortisol due to excessive adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) secretion. Most often hypersecretion of ACTH is due to a pituitary adenoma, where surgical resection of the tumor is considered first-line treatment for the disease. Alternatively, the FDA has recently approved the somatostatin analogue, Signifor® (pasireotide), for the management of Cushing's disease in patients for whom surgery is not an option. Maintenance of thyroid function during pregnancy is critical for both maternal and fetal health and development; therefore, knowledge regarding the relationship between thyroid hormones and pregnancy is essential. The American Thyroid Association task force has developed clinical guidelines on the diagnosis and treatment of thyroid disease during pregnancy. Gestational thyroid diseases are divided into two classifications, hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism, which are further divided into more specific classifications based on clinical presentation. The purpose of this study is to investigate and determine the role of PEDF in the pathogenesis of diabetic retinopathy as induced by advanced glycation end-products (AGEs). Human retinal pericytes were isolated from donors and will be measured for cell proliferation under the influence of PEDF both in the presence and absence of AGEs. Expected outcomes involve both the maintenance and increased survival of HRPs after treatment with PEDF under stimulated hyperglycemic conditions.

Purpose: This project evaluated current practices for Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) screening and management among Asian Americans (AAs) presenting to a primary care clinic and determined whether these practices adhered to the American Diabetes Association (ADA)’s 2018 guidelines.

Methods: A retrospective chart review was performed to extract data from clinical case records of AAs who visited the Vietnamese Health Center (VHC) between November 1, 2017 and November 1, 2018. Descriptive statistics were utilized to analyze the data.

Results: Of 173 charts reviewed, 76.3% of AAs had no previous T2DM diagnosis and 23.7% had a previous diagnosis. Among those without …

Objective: We investigated the relationships of maternal circulating individual free fatty acids (FFA) with insulin resistance, insulin secretion and inflammatory biomarkers during mid-pregnancy.

Research design and methods: The data were drawn from a prospective cohort of generally healthy pregnant women (n=1368, African-American 36%, Hispanic 48%, Caucasian 16%) in Camden, NJ. We quantitatively determined 11 FFAs, seven cytokine/adipokine, homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) and C-peptide levels from the fasting blood samples that were collected at 16 weeks of gestation. Most NF-PNETs are found at an advanced stage because patients are mostly asymptomatic. Myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) is a chronic health condition; its etiology is poorly understood, and treatment options are limited to management of symptoms. Current recommended treatment options are controversial, and evidence of effectiveness is limited. This paper proposes a novel model for symptom management of ME/CFS using mindfulness-based interventions, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), and relaxation techniques. A comprehensive review of available evidence is used to support this approach. We describe a case of an adolescent female with Type A insulin resistance whose severe hirsutism and hyperandrogenism were improved with leuprolide, despite extreme hyperinsulinemia. Ovarian volume decreased in association with the resolution of hyperandrogenism, consistent with ovarian size reflecting hyperandrogenism in adolescents.

This case allowed us to examine the frequently debated bidirectional relationship between insulin and hyperandrogenism, often deemed independent of gonadotropin activity.

The American Diabetes Association guidelines recommend an annual foot exam in patients with type 1 and 2 diabetes who are ten years old or older and who have been diagnosed with diabetes at least five years. Quality improvement tools were used to improve the care provided to our patients by implementing an annual food exam.

Hyperparathyroidism-jaw tumor (HPT-JT) syndrome is a disease characterized by parathyroid tumors, renal cysts or tumors, uterine tumors, and ossifying jaw fibromas. The cause of this syndrome is linked to a tumor suppressor gene called Cdc73, which encodes the protein product parafibromin. The loss of proper expression of Cdc73/parafibromin is implicated in the development of the tumors typical of HPT-JT, although the exact mechanisms of tumorigenesis are unclear.
