Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a prevalent microvascular complication of diabetes mellitus (DM, both types 1 and 2), affecting millions of individuals worldwide. DM is known to induce changes in platelet function and hemostasis, thereby elevating the risk of thrombotic incidents. The hyperglycemic environment in DM can trigger platelet hyperactivity, potentially exacerbating the onset and progression of DR. Despite the intricate pathophysiology of DR, which involves oxidative stress, inflammation, retinal neovascularization, and the disruption of the blood-retina barrier, the specific mechanisms underlying platelet hyperactivity in the microvasculature of DM patients remain inadequately explored. Opioid use disorder (OUD), one of the greatest public health threats in the US, requires urgent attention. In 2022, the CDC reported 107,941 overdose deaths, over 70% attributed to synthetic opioids such as fentanyl (FEN). An alarming increase in opioid use disorder (OUD) diagnoses in pregnant people resulted in a 5-fold rise in cases of neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome (NOWS). This condition elicits sympathetic overactivity, neural hyperexcitability, and a stress reaction characterized by tachycardia and hypertension. Whether prenatal exposure to fentanyl induces cardiovascular dysfunction in the offspring remains undetermined, impeding the timely development of strategies to mitigate OUD-related health risks …

Cardiovascular diseases are the leading causes of death globally and about 200,000 individuals experience their second myocardial infarction yearly. There is a lack of understanding about how lifestyle and behavioral changes can prevent secondary myocardial infarction a year in the United States. The objective of this study is to use a mixed methods approach to understand how individuals who have made lifestyle behavioral changes to prevent their secondary myocardial infarction. Surveys and interviews consisted of questions about the participants' health behaviors and health history. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) function as potent mediators of intercellular communication for many in vivo processes, contributing to both health and disease related conditions. Given their biological origins and diverse functionality from correspondingly unique "cargo" compositions, both endogenous and modified EVs are garnering attention as promising therapeutic modalities and vehicles for targeted therapeutic delivery applications. Angioedema is the swelling of deeper layers of skin caused by a build-up fluid, oftentimes due to the culmination of immune system activation against allergens. There are several causes of angioedema, including animal dander, exposure to various foods, insect bites, and medications such as Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors and Angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs). This swelling primarily presents periorbital and periorally, however can also less-commonly affect the airway. Angioedema can be life-threatening if involving the throat and larynx given the potential of respiratory airway compromise.
