Rucker, Rudy Rucker May 1996

Rucker, Rudy Rucker

SWITCH

In this article, Rudy Rucker shares his thoughts on hacking. He summarizes it as normal actions, such as building a car, or kneading clay. He compares hacking to things that are buildable by hand, and views creating computer programs the same way. One of the benefits of creating your own computer programs is that you can customize themn however you want. However customizing software on your own is extremely time consuming. He then goes into further detail about artificial life and how hyperspace works. Hacking bends the cyber reality that we are accustomed to, and modifying programs outside of what …

The Design And Implementation Of A Toolkit For The Creation Of Virtual Environments, Jesse Kinross-Smith Jan 1996

The Design And Implementation Of A Toolkit For The Creation Of Virtual Environments, Jesse Kinross-Smith

Theses : Honours

Virtual Reality is a field that is steadily increasing in popularity and interest. New developments in both hardware and software have empowered developers with new devices allowing faster and better quality interaction with virtual environments. However, the emphasis of research in virtual environments has been more concerned with development of new display and input devices, as opposed to the investigation of different methods of interaction that a three-dimensional environment offers. This project designs and implements a three-dimensional, interactive, virtual environment development system upon an existing three-dimensional rendering engine. The aim of the project is to allow users to generate virtual …

Arbitrary Views Of High-Dimensional Space And Data, Andrew Ellerton Jan 1996

Arbitrary Views Of High-Dimensional Space And Data, Andrew Ellerton

Theses : Honours

Computer generated images of three dimensional scenes objects are the result of parallel/perspective projections of the objects onto a two dimensional plane. The computational techniques may be extended to project n-dimensional hyperobjects onto (n-1) dimensions, for n > 3. Projection to one less dimension may be applied recursively for data of any high dimension until that data is two-dimensional, when it may be directed to a computer screen or to some other two-dimensional output device. Arbitrary specification of eye location, target location, field-of-view angles and other parameters provide flexibility, so that data may be viewed-and hence perceived-in previously unavailable ways. However, …

Temporal Influence On Awareness, Don E. Hill Dec 1995

Temporal Influence On Awareness, Don E. Hill

Theses and Dissertations

Grossberg's Motion Oriented Contrast Filter (MOC) was extensively analyzed (7). The output from the filter's "global motion" neuronal layer was compared to a noncausal post-processing filter developed by AFIT. Both filters were shown to incorporate a weighted, noncausal temporal range of input data in processed output. The global motion framework was then implemented using a physiologically motivated pulsed neural model - the Pulse Coupled Neural Network (PCNN). By incorporating both spatial and temporal data, the PCNN was shown to exhibit a common visual illusion, apparent motion. The existence of a physiological temporal processing range was further investigated through implementation of …

Reducing Lag In Virtual Displays Using Multiple Model Adaptive Estimation, David W. Kyger Dec 1995

Reducing Lag In Virtual Displays Using Multiple Model Adaptive Estimation, David W. Kyger

Theses and Dissertations

Multiple Model Adaptive Estimation is an effective method for reducing lag in virtual environment displays. Lag in displays (the time from head motion to the appearance of the proper image on the display) is a significant detriment to realism in virtual environments. Increasing the speed of the computers which control the virtual display is not a final answer. No matter how fast the processors work, there will always be demands to do more. Predicting angular head positions (look-angles) can reduce the lag by allowing the computer to calculate the appropriate scene before it is needed on the display. Single predictors …

Biomedical Data Interpolation For 3-D Visualization, Ming-Chung Chen Jun 1995

Biomedical Data Interpolation For 3-D Visualization, Ming-Chung Chen

Theses and Dissertations

Medical imaging devices that produce three-dimensional data usually produce the data in the form of image slices. In such images, the resolution in z direction is lower than in x and y directions. Before extracting and displaying objects in such images, an interpolated 3-D gray-scale volume image can be generated via image interpolation techniques to fill in the missing information. The subject of this thesis is the applying three different interpolation techniques to generate intermediate slices and comparing their qualities. The three interpolation techniques are linear interpolation, cubic spline interpolation, and Fourier interpolation. We also apply the CT image matching …

Analysis Of Heads-Up Display Quickening Versus Handling Qualities, Gary M. Konnert Mar 1995

Analysis Of Heads-Up Display Quickening Versus Handling Qualities, Gary M. Konnert

Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated an analytical means of selecting the quickening time constant for the standardized Heads-Up Display flight path marker. The theoretically determined time constant allowed a faster, less resource intensive means of selecting the quickening time constant. The theoretically best time constant for pilot-aircraft handling qualities was equal to the airframe pitch attitude high frequency zero time constant, Tθ2. Flight test indicated an empirical, more labor intensive method yielded better handling qualities, even though paper analysis indicated the theoretical method was better. The theoretically determined time constant gave slightly lower handling qualities. but was less costly to …

Image Perception Wavelet Simulation And Enhancement For The Visually Impaired, Lemuel Ray Myers Jr. Dec 1994

Image Perception Wavelet Simulation And Enhancement For The Visually Impaired, Lemuel Ray Myers Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

This research delves into the area of image enhancement for the visually impaired. Binocular macular degeneration a visual impairment, affects many Americans; since this condition could not be corrected with conventional glasses the literature suggested using an enhancement system which used a pre-emphasis algorithm to enhance the input image for output to the observer. The work of Dr. Eli Peli, a pioneer in the field of image enhancement, is examine and reproduced. Since his work concentrated mainly on frequency analysis of images, the bulk of this research involves using discrete wavelet analysis to augment that work. A biorthogonal wavelet set …

Factors In Human-Computer Interface Design (A Pilot Study), Susan Stewart Dec 1994

Factors In Human-Computer Interface Design (A Pilot Study), Susan Stewart

Theses and Dissertations

The DoD has budgeted over $9.8 billion for 1995 for information technology, yet many government office workers let their existing systems sit idle. This thesis explores why these computers are sitting idle. This researcher's initial hypothesis was that certain features of the human-computer interface can positively or negatively affect efficiency, retention, and satisfaction level of workers. Although some research is being done in this area, interfaces continue to be of poor quality, especially in the DoD, where long procurement cycles, forced purchases, and limited budgets result in out-of-date software. Intuitively most programmers know the human-computer interface impacts on a person's …

Our algorithmic tool follows the model of RGB percentage curves, but now the control of these curves is though algorithms that indirectly, and more abstractly, create, evolve, and modify such curves. To fully explain our methods we must first introduce the topic "mutating expressions." This is done in Section Two. In Section Three we document the user-interface problems we dealt with, and finally in Section Four discuss conclusions and suggest ideas for future exploration. Before commencing with the technical details however, we wish to emphasize the nature of the "colorization" problem that led to the conception and development of our …
