A Study On The Growth Properties And Livability Of Tushin Lambs, Mevlüt Karaoğlu, Muhli̇s Maci̇t, Hakki Emsen

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The birth weight and weaning weight of all the lambs were 4.35 kg, and 16.79 kg respectively. The weight at the beginning and end of the grazing period, and the total and daily weight gain of females on the pasture in were found to be 15.62 kg, 24.51 kg, 6.03 kg and 66.37g respectively. The values of survival rate in different periods were determined to be 95.2 percent until the 30th, 60th and 90th days. Tushin lambs showed as good a performance as Akkaraman and Morkaraman lambs reared in different environmental conditions.

This study was carried out to determine the effects of heat and sodiummetabisulfite treated soybeans in broiler rations on live weight, feed consumption, feed efficiency, and the weights of the liver, pancreas, kidney, spleen and heart and the severity of lesions in these organs. In this study, the effects of feeds supplemented with DL-alanine and betaine on the growth and chemical composition of fingerling rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) were investigated. Fish fed with DL-alanine (1.5% of diet) and betaine (1.5% of diet) supplemented diets had greater weight gains (35.36±1.81g and 38.47±3.02 g respectively) than those fed a control diet (28.32±0.31 g). It was found that the groups fed with attractant supplemented diets had better feed conversion and protein efficiency ratios than the control group. In this study, the chemical components of Clarias gariepinus (Burchell 1822), which is distributed in Aksu Stream in the Antalya region of Turkey, and their suitable utilization methods were investigated. 68% fish flesh yield, 16.58% protein, 75.44% moisture, 5.38% fat and 1.21% crude ash were established. Different processing methods, hot smoking boiling and roasting were applied. As a result of these applications, from the point of view of consumption, the most suitable product was determined to be the hot smoked one. The colour, smell, texture and taste of the product obtained with hot smoking were found to be optimum.

In this research, the phenotypic parameters of fattening characteristics were determined and the of heritabilities of these traits were estimated in the Ile de France (IF) x Akkaraman (AK) (G_1) crossbreed male lambs. It was estimated that the widest genetic variation was daily live weight gain between the beginning of fattening and the 42nd and 56th day. It was concluded that the selection based on the daily live weight gain of the progenies to increase the meat yield in the IF X AK (G_1) sheep can be successful.

This study was carried out to determine the seroprevalance of Theileria annulata in non-vaccinated cattle in Elazığ, Malatya and Tunceli provinces between May 1997 and March 1998. Serum samples were collected from a total of 741 cattle in Elazığ, Malatya, Tunceli and vicinities. Serum antibodies against T. annulata were investigated by the Indirect Fluorescence Antibody (IFA) test. In addition, peripheral blood smears were prepared and examined under the microscope. The seroprevalance of Theileria annulata in Elazığ, Malatya and Tunceli provinces was 42.8%, 17.1% and 34.8%; piroplasm forms of Theileria annulata in these animals were 7%, 5.5% and 3%, respectively.

This study was carried out to determine the incidence of C.burnetii infection using the Indirect Fluorescent Antibody (IFA)Test in ewes in Elazığ and neighboring provinces.Seropositivity was detected in 38.59 %(71/184)of aborted ewes and in 11.01 %(25/227)of unaborted ewes.The seropositivity rates were 20 %in Elazığ,20% in Malatya, 27.95 %in Bingöl and 27.27% in Muş. Antibody titers ranged from 1/80 to 1/1280. Q fever should be considered an important cause of abortions in ewes in Elazığ and neighboring provinces.

This study was carried out to determine the chemical composition and meat yield of Vimba (Vimba vimba tenella)caught from Karacaören I Dam Lake. The average water content, crude protein, crude fat and crude ash were determined to be 77.96 % ±1.66, 15.30 % ±0.79, 2,41 % ±0.57 and 1.28 % ±0.21 respectively. In the investigated samples ratio of the head weight,viscera,fins and total weight with meat yield were determined. Meat yields of male and female fish were 63.76 % -71.02 % and 67.97 % -70.06 % respectively.
