This study was conducted with the aim of identifying the tick species infesting cattle, sheep and goats and their seasonal activities in the Burdur area of Turkey. The study was carried out between 1 September 1999 and 31 August 2000 on animals owned by local farmers in Burdur and 14 surrounding villages. The study centres were visited twice a month. The ticks collected from animals and barns were brought to the laboratory and identified at species level by stereo-microscopic examination. The aim of this investigation was to compare some quality characteristics of goose-meat salami with those of turkey- and chicken-meat salami in order to determine its suitability for consumption and to able to use goose meat for meat product technology. The pH values of experimental samples were highest in the goose-meat salami and lowest in the turkey-meat salami. Moisture rates of samples produced with a mixture of two kinds of poultry meat were lower than those of the others. This research was carried out on 125-day-old Ile de France (IF)X Akkaraman (AK) (G1) male lambs. In the research, the phenotypic parameters of some testis characteristics determined before and after slaughtering were calculated. The least-squares means of left and right testis diameters, left and right testis lengths, left and right testis volumes before and after slaughtering were found to be 3.7±0.09 cm and 4.2±0.12 cm; 3.9±0.10 cm and 4.2±0.11 cm; 6.6±0.17 cm and 7.4±0.21 cm; 6.9±0.17 cm and 7.4±0.17 cm; 51.7±2.76 cm^3 and 70.1±4.57 cm^3; 57.8±3.76 cm^3 and 87.4±7.86 cm^3, respectively. This study was carried out on cattle to detect the seroprevalence of babesiosis around Kayseri between July 1997 and January 1999. During this period a total of 191 cattle were examined for the Babesia species. Blood samples were collected from the cattle to obtain sera. During sampling, thick and thin blood smears were prepared from the punctured tail of each animal. Ticks were collected from the animals sampled. The sera were tested for the presence of antibodies to the Babesia species by IFAT. For the first time in Turkey, renal autotransplantation in 7 cats and renal allotransplantation in 7 cats having blood-crossmatch-compatible donors were performed. Immunosuppression was maintained by a prednisolone-cyclosporin combination in the renal allotransplantation group. All cats in the renal allotransplantation group died during the operation or between 3 and 72 h postoperatively. Two cats in the renal autotransplantation group survived approximately 2 years. Hyperacute or acute rejection findings were not encountered according to perioperative observations, laboratory findings or histopathological evaluations of renal allografts. In this study we examined factors affecting the colonization of campylobacters in chick intestines, colonization times and elicited immune responses. In chicks, infected orally by minimal infective dose _{100} (MID_{100}), colonization in the intestines was observed to reach 100% during the 3-week period following C. jejuni and C. coli inoculation. When the SDS-PAGE protein profiles of the inoculated and isolated strains were examined similarities of 98.3% among C. jejuni strains and 98.5% among C. coli strains were determined. The objective of the present study was to transfer sheep embryos produced in vitro to recipient ewes. Ovaries were taken from slaughtered Kıvırcık ewes and transferred to the laboratory in phosphate buffered saline (PBS) at 30-35 ºC. The seasonal variation and meat composition of blue crabs (Callinectes sapidus Rathbun, 1896) were investigated. Twenty (10 male, 10 female) crabs were used each season. The total weight of the samples was estimated and the ratios of crude protein, lipid, dry matter and crude ash were obtained from meat of the body and claws. Comparatively higher values of dry matter, crude ash and lipid were determined for the claw meat of males in winter. Achondroplasia and hypochondroplasia are two forms of skeletal dysplasias caused predominantly by single base mutations in the fibroblast growth factor receptor 3 gene (FGFR-3). The mutation for achondroplasia is a G1138A/C substitution and the mutation for hypochondroplasia (occurring about 50% of the time) is a C1620A/G substitution. Recent genetic studies have shown that spontaneous mutations for achondroplasia and hypochondroplasia occur exclusively on the paternally derived chromosome, suggesting that these mutations occur preferentially during spermatogenesis. For unknown reasons, the mutation rates at these FGFR-3 nucleotides appear to occur at a much higher frequency than nucleotide specific mutation rates observed in other …

Magnetic resonance imaging offers a means of observing the internal structure of the brain where traditional procedures of embedding, sectioning, staining, mounting, and microscopic examination of thousands of sections are not practical. Furthermore, internal structures can be analyzed in their precise quantitative spatial interrelationships, which is difficult to accomplish after the spatial distortions often accompanying histological processing. For these reasons, magnetic resonance imaging makes specimens that were traditionally difficult to analyze, more accessible. The objective of this study is to review the information regarding the development of puberty in gilts and how it influences subsequent reproductive performance such an understanding can be used to improve mating efficiency in gilts. The percentage of gilts in a herd strongly influences overall productivity. The first management decision that has to be made about gilts entering the breeding herd, is the timing of the first breeding. This largely depends on when puberty develops. Thirty, one-day-old broilers were divided into 3 groups, 10 birds each. Group 1 was vaccinated twice with a live infectious bronchitis virus vaccine, (IBV)-serotype Massachusetts, strain H120 when one day old and a live IBV-strain Massachusetts vaccine when ten days old. Group 2 was vaccinated once with a live IBV-strain Massachusetts vaccine when ten days old. Group 3 were non-vaccinated controls. Blood samples were taken from birds on days 1, 10, 21, 28, 35 and 42. This study was conducted in 78 dairy cows(50 repeat breeders and 28 normal cows, with no history of breeding difficulty) from 6 livestock regions of Thailand. Observations were made on the lesions of granular vulvitis and bacteriology performed in order to isolate Ureaplasma diversum. Swabs were taken from 3 sites; the clitoral fossa, the dorsal vulva lips and the external cervical osteum. The isolation of U. diversum was carried out using Taylor Robinson Medium. A female, 10-month old, mixed breed cat showed clinical signs of severe dehydration, purulent nasal discharge, dyspnea, severe crepitating lung sounds and no response to antibiotic treatment. Upon necropsy, histopathology revealed severe, diffuse, fibrinopurulent pleuropneumonia and numerous, homogeneous, amphophilic, intranuclear inclusion bodies in the pulmonary alveolar macrophages, bronchial and alveolar epithelium and bronchial glandular epitheliums. Immunohistochemical studies using 3 different monoclonal, anti-Feline Herpesvirus type 1 antibodies, revealed immunoreactivity of viral antigen in the lung that was associated with the histopathological changes. Monoclonal, anti-glycoprotein B, antibody showed the strongest immunoreactivity.

Infected-cell protein 0 encoded by bovine herpesvirus 1 (BHV-1) (bICP0) is necessary for efficient productive infection, in large part, because it activates all 3 classes of BHV-1 genes (U. V. Wirth, C. Fraefel, B. Vogt, C. Vlcek, V. Paces, and M. Schwyzer, J. Virol. 66:2763–2772, 1992). Although bICP0 is believed to be a functional homologue of herpes simplex virus type 1-encoded ICP0, the only well-conserved domain between the proteins is a zinc ring finger located near the amino terminus of both proteins. Bovine herpesvirus 1 (BHV-1) is an important pathogen of cattle, and infection is usually initiated in the ocular or nasal cavity. Like other alphaherpesviruses, BHV-1 establishes latency in sensory neurons but has the potential of reactivating from latency and spreading. The only abundant viral transcript expressed during latency is the latency-related (LR) RNA, which is alternatively spliced in trigeminal ganglia during acute infection (L. R. Devireddy and C. Opportunistic Vibrios In Cultured Taiwanese Soft-Shelled Turtles (Pelodiscus Sinensis), Channarong Rodkhum, Jaennuj Wongtavatchai, Win Surachetpong, Olarn Tonweerapongsiri, Suparp Kumlungpeat, Jirasak Tangtrongpiros

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

One hundred clinically healthy Taiwanease soft-shelled turtles (Pelodiscus sinensis) were sampled by blood sampling and cloacal swabing. Samples were first cultured in a pre-enrichment media and then selective isolation was performed for vibrios on Thiosulfate-Citrate-Bile salts-Sucrose agar (TCBS). Species of the isolated vibrios were identified by standard biochemical procedures. A total of 146 vibrio isolates were found in 83 out of 100 cloacal swabs (83%), whereas none were found in the 50 blood samples. Forty-seven cutaneous mast cell tumors from dogs were pathologically classified into three grades numbered grade 1 to 3. Age, sex, breed, tumor location, and their histologic grading were tabulated. Luna’s method, Unna’s method, Giemsa, toluidine blue, and alcian blue/safranine stainings were applied in order to compare the diagnosis and prognosis of the tumors. The staining was positive for mast cell tumors by the different methods 64% (30/47), 68% (32/47), 70% (33/47), 72% (34/47), and 81% (38/47), respectively. Direct and indirect arterial blood pressure measurements, by the oscillometric method, were carried out on twelve anesthetized healthy tigers during claw amputation. There were seven males and five females aged (mean ± SD) 4 ± 1 months and weighing (mean ± SD) 18 ± 11 kg. Anesthesia was induced using intramuscular ketamine, in conjunction with xylazine and atropine sulphate, and maintained by halothane inhalation. Two yearling swamp buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) calves, one male and one female, were used for measuring their carotid blood pressure by the classic Stephen Hales method. The animals were premedicated with xylazine hydrochloride followed by intravenous guaifenesin-thiopental. The systolic blood pressure in the male calf was 145.7 mmHg, while the Statham transducer showed 150 mmHg. The pressure in the female calf was 136.2 mmHg and 140 mmHg by the Stephen Hales and electronic methods, respectively.
