Avipox In A Common Buzzard (Buteo Buteo), Özlem Özmen, Gerry M. Dorrestein

An adult, male common buzzard (Buteo buteo) with a leg fracture and multiple proliferative cutaneous nodules on its feet was brought to Akdeniz University Burdur Veterinary Faculty by a farmer who found the bird at his farm. There were similar small nodules on the eyelids and beak. The fractured bone ends had become necrotized. The buzzard was euthanized. On histopathological examination of nodules, large, eosinophilic intracytoplasmic inclusion bodies (Bollinger bodies) were seen. Avipox was diagnosed on the basis of the typical gross and microscopic features.

In this study, the detection of canine parvovirus (CPV) in a fecal sample from a dog with enteritis was performed for the first time using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in Turkey. The final PCR product was analyzed using the restriction fragment length polymorphysm (RFLP) technique. RFLP analysis using Apa LI and Eco RV restriction endonucleases revealed homology in the nucleotide sequence in at least the VP2 coding region of the virus DNAs detected in the fecal specimen and prepared from attenuated vaccine virus as a positive control.

A trivalent Escherichia coli vaccine (TECA) was prepared from serotypes O1, O2 and O78 and one series of TECA was combined with an inactivated Newcastle Disease vaccine. TECA and combined vaccine were experimentally investigated for immunogenic effects in pullets and hens. This study was carried out at two stages consisting of rearing and laying periods: (1) A number of fourty chicks aged 15 days were subcutaneously vaccinated with 0.2 ml TECA . In the present study, differences occurring in the uropygial glands of roosters fed with a diet containing red hot pepper from 1-day old until 5-months old, were investigated in their histological and morphometrical aspects. The effects of 90 Hz and 5 mT EMF on blood Ca^{++}, P^{+++}, Na^{+}, K^{+} and Cl^{-} levels were investigated. For this purpose, 72 Swiss-Albino mice were used. As regards fiber diameter quality and yields, Turkish Merinos have proven successful. They have better fertility and meat yields than native species bred in Turkey. It is of significance to know the similarity degree between Turkish Merinos and Deutsches Merinofleischschaf. This study was conducted to determine the presence and contamination levels of Listeria spp. in 100 samples of chicken meat, including 40 mince meat samples, 30 meatball samples and 30 burger samples which were retailed fresh in the markets of Ankara. USDA/FSIS suggested methods were used for the isolation and identification of Listeria spp., while the number of Listeria spp. was detected by the Most Probable Number (MPN) technique. In this study, the oviducts of 10 laying hens aged 8 months and 10 oviducts of pullets aged 2 months were comparatively examined. The oviducts of hens consisted of five regions: infundibulum, magnum, isthmus, uterus and vagina. Tissue samples were taken from the five oviduct regions. The samples were fixed in 10% neutral formalin and embedded in paraffin and then cut into 6 micron sections. This study was carried out with a total of 23 animals: two dogs and 21 cats. Appropriate mini-titanium plates and screws were selected with the aid of radiographs the day before the operation. All the animals were anesthesized with xylazine hydrochloride 2.3 mg/kg IM (Rompun, Bayer, Turkey) premedication followed by ketamine hydrochloride 10 mg/kg IM (Ketalar, Eczacıbaşı, Turkey) injection. In this study Cu, Zn, Pb and Cd contents were analyzed in liver and muscle tissues of ten fish species (Mullus barbatus, Mugil cephalus, Trachurus trachurus, Pagellus acarne, Dicentrarchus labrax, Sparus auratus, Sardinella aurita, Boops boops, Scomber japonicus, Solea solea) caught in the Gulf of Antalya in January, February and March 2000. Cu and Zn contents were found to be 0.51-3.66 mg/kg and 3.17-11.36 mg/kg in fish muscles and 0.83-4.44 mg/kg and 3.97-15.14 mg/kg in liver tissue respectively. This study was carried out to compare the growth, fattening performance and carcass characteristics of Morkaraman (M) and Kıvırcık (K) x (K x M) Bı lambs. Fifty-four M and 57 K x (K x M) Bı male and female lambs were used for growth traits and 18 M and 30 K x (K x M) Bı for fattening traits, and 6 male lambs for slaughter and carcass traits. It was observed that the proximal and distal epiphyseal regions were not closed and even the epiphysis was partially spongious. The aim of this study was to determine immunogenic structures by immunoblotting in thermophilic Campylobacter strains isolated from chickens. The bands obtained from C. jejuni strains were found to be distributed between 10.8 and 116.5 kD by SDS-PAGE analysis of whole cell proteins. The bands 78, 63, 52, 48.5, 43.5, 29.8, 25.6, 22, 18.5, 17.2 and 16.5 kD were detected as the major common bands in all C. jejuni strains. In this study, leptospiral antibodies were investigated by Microscopic Agglutination Test (MAT) and Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) in order to detect leptospirosis and serotypes which cause leptospira infection in cattle raised in Kars and Ardahan. Live and sonicated antigens prepared from Leptospira hardjo and Leptospira grippotyphosa serotypes were used. This study was performed to determine the incidence and anatomo-pathologic aspects of reproductive organ tumors in laying chickens. For this research, 10,475 16-18-month-old, commercial laying hens of the Babcock genotype were obtained from four flocks in Afyon city. They were examined right after slaughtering, and reproductive organ tumors in 804 hens (7.67%) were observed. Out of these 804 hens, leiomyoma was found in 760 hens (7.25%), oviduct adenocarcinoma in 39 hens (0.37%) and leiomyoma together with oviduct adenocarcinoma in 5 hens (0.05%) were detected. This study was carried out to determine height at withers, heart girth and cannon bone circumference measurements in purebred Arabian colts and fillies at Çifteler State Farm. Data obtained from the 1980-1998 marketing catalogue, which includes 535 colts and 392 fillies in Çifteler State Farm, were used. The average values of height at withers, heart girth, and cannon bone circumference for 224 colts and 319 fillies younger than 24 months were calculated to be 141.634±0.212 cm, 152.99±0.33 cm and 17.87±0.04 cm; and 140.826±0.18 cm, 153.94±0.33 cm, and 17.47±0.04 cm, respectively. This research was conducted to determine the characteristics of milk yield of Holstein Friesian cows raised at Kocas state farm in Central Anatolia. The material of the research was 970 lactation records of 362 dairy cows raised from 1988 to 1995 at Kocas state farm. Statistical analysis of the records was conducted with the Minitab version 9.2 computer program. Significant differences between groups were determined by the method of Least Significant Difference (LSD). The general mean values of lactation length, lactation milk yield and 305 day milk yield were respectively 304.4±1.39 days, 4966±32.96 kg and 4784± 27.35.

This study describes a salmonella infection in a chinchilla farm of 40 families in the Yalova region. Twenty-four families were affected in a 10-day period after the outbreak of the disease and the clinical signs were apathy, anorexia, diarrhoea with or without hemorrhage, tremors, local paralysis, mucopurulent or hemorrhagic vaginal secretion in some females, abortions in 1 to 2 month-pregnant animals and death. The newborn and pregnant animals were affected more severely. The aim of the this study was to observe possible changes in coagulation profiles in dogs with septic shock. A total of 30 dogs (control group n=10, test group n=20) were used as materials in this study. Although different diseases leading to septic shock were diagnosed in dogs in the test group, dogs were selected on the basis of septic shock criteria such as fever or hypothermia, hypotension, leukopenia or leukocytosis and thrombocytopenia. The objective of this review was to discuss microbial protein synthesis and the effects of sources and concentrations of nitrogen and carbohydrate on microbial protein synthesis. Factors affecting lamb weaning weight (WW) and the (co)variance components due to direct and maternal effects on weight were investigated using a small data set based on ewes involved in an embryo transfer trial. Records of 253 Welsh Mountain lambs for adjusted 50 day weaning weight were obtained from the nucleus flock of the CAMDA co-operative breeding scheme. DFREML was used for variance component analyses. Significant fixed effects included in the model were rearing dam age, sex, rearing type and year. Six different models were used to analyse variance components.
