Experimental toxoplasmosis was induced in rabbits using different routes. A total of 42 animals were used; 36 of them were in the experimental groups and the other six comprised the control group. In addition, five guinea pigs were used for preparing hyperimmune sera against Toxoplasma gondii. The Ankara strain was inoculated intravenously (group I, n: 12), intraperitoneally (group II, n: 12) and intradermally (group III, n: 12) into the rabbits. The purpose of this investigation was to establish whether there were any differences in the lipid and lipoprotein levels of dairy cows with fatty liver. Fifty-four dairy cows with fatty liver and 12 healthy dairy cows were used in the study. The liver fat content was determined in all cows histologically. Cows with fatty liver (n = 54) were grouped according to liver fat content as cows with mild (n = 17), moderate (n = 17) or severe(n = 20) fatty liver. The effect of melatonin and progestagen sponge administrations separately and together on the reproductive performance at the onset of the breeding season were investigated in Kıvırcık ewes. On June 22, to 40 anoestrous and non-lactating ewes were administrated melatonin (Regulin) implants. On July 14, progestagen (Synchron) sponges were inserted in 20 of these ewes and in 20 other ewes. The efficacy of doramectin (Dectomax, Pfizer) and moxidectin (Cydectin, Abfar) against gastrointestinal nematode infection was evaluated in cows which were naturally infected with these nematodes. For that purpose over 100 cows' faeces were tested for gastrointestinal nematodes with the saturated salt solution method. Infected cows were selected according to the McMaster criteria. To establish whether the cows were infected with gastrointestinal nematodes, their coprocultures were screened for the presence of Ostertagia, Haemonchus, Nematodirus and Trichostrongylus species. The fatty acid (FA) composition of some tissues of Salmo trutta labrax, Pallas, 1811 mature native freshwater wild salmon species caught from Kazandere creek in the Çoruh region in Turkey were investigated. Fatty acids profiles of muscle, liver, gonad, egg and adipose tissue were compared in terms of total and individual saturated and unsaturated fatty acids. The results showed that the highest total saturated fatty acid content was in the muscle (37.20 ± 1.13%) while the lowest value was in the egg (27.12 ± 2.53%), and the differences were significant (P < 0.05) among the tissues. Data on age, growth, reproduction, mortality and exploitation were examined for common sole collected in İskenderun Bay from March 2000 to February 2001. The examined individuals were aged between 1 and 8 years. Total length ranged from 8.8 to 28.2 cm. The length-weight relationships for males (a = 0.0117, b = 2.998) and females (a = 0.0091, b = 3.077) showed no significant difference from isometric growth. Çiğ köfte is a special Turkish meal prepared from minced meat, bulgur, onions, garlic and different spices. In this study, a total of 50 çiğ köfte samples sold in Ankara were microbiologically analysed in order to determine their microbiological quality. The numbers of total mesophilic aerobic bacteria, lactobacilli, micrococci/staphylococci, coagulase-positive staphylococci, enterobacteriaceae, coliform, enterococci, pseudomonas, yeasts and molds were determined by drop plating, whereas the B. cereus count was determined by spread plating, and the isolation of Salmonella involved enrichment procedures. The aim of this study was to compare the effects of isotonic sodium chloride (ISS-0.9%), hypertonic sodium chloride (HSS-7.2%), HSS + lactate ringer solution (LRS) and HSS + sodium bicarbonate solution (SBS-1.3%) in the treatment of dogs with endotoxaemia. Endotoxaemia was induced by slow injection of a 1 mg/kg/i.v. dose of E. coli endotoxin (0111:B4). The aim of the present study was the confirmation of pregnancy diagnosis in mares by the determination of oestradiol-17 b in faeces. The research was carried out on 30 cyclic mares. Faeces samples were collected through pregnancy at monthly intervals. The faeces samples of pregnant and non-pregnant mares contained a mean oestradiol-17 b concentration of 9.39 ± 2.63 and 7.70 ± 2.00 ng/g, respectively in the 4^{th} month of gestation. Skeletal muscle development in avian embryos depends on the activation, proliferation, differentiation, and fusion of embryonic myoblasts. These processes as well as early embryonic development are mainly regulated by major growth factors such as IGF-I, IGF-II, TGF-b and FGFs. Cyclodextrins are used extensively in food, cosmetic, drug and chemical industries to increase aqueous solubility and stability, and reduce or eliminate the unpleasant taste and smell of many products. Experiments were conducted to examine the effect of a pre-haemolytic dose of methyl b-cyclodextrin (MBCD) on the osmotic fragility of erythrocytes collected from sheep, cattle and humans. Forty-eight Sprague-Dawley rats were killed by cervical dislocation, electric shock and drowning to investigate the correlations between types of death and levels of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), adenosine diphosphate (ADP) and adenosine monophosphate (AMP) in heart tissue after death. Experimental pregnancy was induced with gonadal steroids in in vivo ovariectomized rats. Conditions for premature delivery were established by giving a salt-rich diet and administering oxytocin to induce high-risk pregnancy. In order to avoid early delivery, a betamimetic ritodrine and the Ca^{++} channel blockers nitrendipine and nicardipine were administered to three separate groups. The optimum UV duration times of eggs were examined in order to develop a simple and safe method for inducing androgenetic development in the Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus. The yield of androgenetic haploid O. niloticus to the pigmentation stage was 18.53 ± 5.3% (relative to controls) with an optimal UV irradiation dose of 540 Jm^{-2} (at 150 µWcm^{-2 }) for 6 min. Most embryos developing after fertilisation with normal spermatozoa showed abnormal morphology and a haploid number of chromosomes (n = 22). The success of oocyte denucleation was also assessed by using the recessive "blond" skin pigmentation character.

The Effects Of Electrical Stimulation On The Sensory And Textural Quality Properties Of Mutton Carcasses, Mete Yanar, Hasan Yeti̇m

The objective of this research was to investigate the influence of electrical stimulation (ES) on the sensory and textural quality characteristics of mutton carcasses from elderly ewes. For this purpose, 14 ovine carcasses from 3-5-year-old ewes were subjected to ES with 350 V, and the effects of ES on the organoleptic and instron textural parameters were evaluated. The ES significantly (P < 0.01) improved the panel tenderness scores of the Longissimus dorsi (LD) muscle. Some of the Instron Warner Bratzler Shear parameters such as peak force and initial yield force values of the LD muscle were also highly significantly (P < 0.01) affected by ES, while the Semimembranosus (SM) muscle was not affected. Hardness and peak force 2 values of LD obtained from the Instron compression test were also significantly (P < 0.05) affected by ES. However, Instron compression parameters of SM muscles were not significantly influenced by ES treatment. The results revealed that the ES could considerably improve the tenderness of the LD from mutton carcasses. In conclusion, the application of ES to mutton carcasses from elderly ewes could be beneficial for the meat industry by increasing the merchandising value and quality of this sort of carcass.

Faecal samples collected from 206 chickens, 170 sheep and 130 cattle were investigated for the presence of Listeria monocytogenes in animals slaughtered at local abattoirs in Elazığ. The prevalance of L. monocytogenes was 4.36% in chickens, 0.58% in sheep and 1.53% in cattle. Of the 12 L. monocytogenes isolates, seven (58.33%) and five (41.66%) belonged to serotypes 1 and 4, respectively. Other species isolated were L. innocua, L. welshimeri, L. seeligeri, L. murrayi and L. grayi. These results indicate that animal faeces could be a source of contamination of carcasses with L. monocytogenes and may lead to foodborne listeriosis.

The objectives of this study were to estimate genetic parameters and breeding values for test-day (TD) and 305-day milk yields, and to compare the results from TD and 305-day analyses. The data comprised 10,822 TD records from 1103 first lactations of Holstein cows from state farms in the western part of Turkey. Additive genetic, residual and permanent environmental variances, heritabilities and breeding values for 305-day and TD milk yields were estimated by the REML method using animal models. This study was carried out to determine the microbiological and chemical quality and the meat yields of shrimp (P. semisulcatus) caught from the Antalya region. Twenty shrimp samples were used for microbiological analyses, 36 for chemical quality analyses and 60 for meat yield analyses. According to microbiological findings, the average numbers of total aerobic mesophilic bacteria, coliforms, staphylococcus-micrococcus, and V. parahaemolyticus in shrimp meat were 5.8 x 10^4 cfu/g, 1.9 x 10^2 cfu/g, 9.2 x 10^2 cfu/g, and 7.5 x 10^1 cfu/g, respectively. The aim of this study was to examine the effects of cadmium on oxytocin-induced myometrium contractions in rats, cows and cats in vitro. The frequency was 12.20 ± 1.2, 11.25 ± 2.7 and 10.70 ± 2.5/10 min, respectively, after 0.01 mM oxytocin induced with myometrial samples in rats, cows and cats. The peak amplitude was 3.84 ± 0.50, 3.44 ± 0.65 and 3.35 ± 0.45 g, respectively, after oxytocin induction. The frequency and peak amplitude decreased after the addition of 0.01 mM cadmium chloride (CdCl_2). The frequency was 1.2 ± 0.4 (p < 0.001), 2.5 ± 0.5 (p < 0.001) and 2.0 ± 0.6(p < 0.001), respectively, and the peak amplitude was 0.7 ± 0.3 (p < 0.001), 1.2 ± 0.2 (p < 0.001) and 0.8 ± 0.4 g (p < 0.001), respectively, in rat, cow and cat myometrium. Finally, the myometrium contractions were completely inhibited in the three species. In conclusion, the effects of cadmium may inhibit both calcium channels and the intracellular-induced mechanism.

In our study, malondialdehyde, antioxidant vitamins, antioxidant substances and some hematologic-biochemical parameter levels in nephrotoxicosis were investigated. Six dogs were used in the study. Blood samples taken before the experiment were used as the control. Blood samples were taken on days 2, 5, 7 and 10 during the experiment. During analysis, we found that the statistical changes were not significant in the retinol and Vitamin C levels of the experiment group when compared to those of the control group. \beta-carotene (P < 0.05) and Vitamin E (P < 0.001) levels were significantly decreased. Increases in the levels of malondialdehyde, seruloplasmin and urine \gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) enzyme were P < 0.001, while decreases in the amounts of glutathione were P < 0.001. We also found that changes in erythrocyte and hemotocrit levels were not significant. On the other hand, increases in the levels of leucocyte (P < 0.01), creatinin and blood urea nitrogen (BUN) P < 0.001 were significant. In conclusion, oxidative damage can occur in cells in nephrotoxicosis, the use of antioxidants could be of benefit during treatment with chemotherapeutics.

The purpose of this study was to determine the presence of Mallophaga species on wild partridges in the Elazığ region. We inspected 68 partridges for Mallophaga species between November and January from 1996 to 2000. At least one species of Mallophaga was found on 48 partridges. Three species of Mallophaga were found on infested partridges. These species, were Goniodes dispar (Burmeister, 1838), Goniocotes pusillus (Nitzch in Giebel, 1866) and Menacanthus lyali (Rodriguez Caabeiro et al.,1983). These three Mallophaga species have not been reported before in Turkey.

To determine the relationship between biochemical parameters and production traits in sheep, 111 of the animals raised in the Bandırma Sheep Research Institute were used as living materials. The blood samples of 31 Hampshire Down x Merino, 33 Dorset Down x Merino, 27 German Black Headed x Merino and 20 Border Leicester x Merino crosses were taken. Transferrin (Tf) and haemoglobin (Hb) types were determined. Some production traits such as greasy fleece weight, staple length, fiber diameter, ondulance and lamb birth weight were estimated. Important correlations between Hb AB and lamb birth weights (P < 0.05), Hb AB and greasy fleece weight in SBA x Merino crosses (P < 0.05), Hb AB and greasy fleece weight in Border Leicester x Merino crosses (P < 0.05), Tf B type and greasy fleece weight in SBA x Merino and Border Leicester x Merino crosses (P < 0.05) and Tf A type and lamb birth weight in SBA x Merino crosses (P < 0.05) were also determined.

In this study, a total of 120 staphylococci strains, 46 coagulase positive and 74 coagulase negative, isolated from chickens were identified according to the characteristics of their cultural, biochemical and some antibiotic properties. The coagulase positive staphylococci consisted of 28 S. aureus, 9 S. delphini, 3 S. intermedius, 2 S. aureus subsp. anaerobicus, 1 S. schleiferi subsp. coagulans, 1 S. hyicus, and 2 unidentified strains.
