The effects of different extenders and cryoprotectants on the viability and fertilizing ability of frozen spermatozoa from the mirror carp, Cyprinus carpio L. (1758), were investigated. Semen was collected from anesthesized males by the abdominal massage method. Having determined the main spermatological properties (volume, motility, duration of motility, total spermatozoa number, concentration and pH), the pooled ejaculates were diluted with 3 extenders containing different cryoprotectants (15% DMSO, 15% DMA, 15% Glycerol) individually. One part semen was added to 3 parts extender. The diluted semen was packaged in 0.5 ml straws and left to equilibrate for 45 min at 4 °C. …

The status of populations of anchovies in Turkish terrestrial waters was preliminarily investigated using morphometric characters with the truss network system. Samples were taken from the main fishing areas of each sea, comprising the central (Sinop) and eastern (Trabzon) Black Sea, the Aegean Sea (İzmir) and the eastern Mediterranean (İskenderun). Plotting discriminant functions 1 and 2, explaining 93% of between-group variability, revealed a high degree of dissimilarity among the anchovy samples, indicating that the anchovies in each sea represent different aggregations. This study examined the pathological changes in tissues and organs with acute intoxications with amitraz and its veterinary medicinal formulation. In total 312 healthy white English mice (Mus musculus), 156 female and 156 male, were used for this purpose. The solutions were given to the mice by gavage at the following dosages: 500, 1000, 1500, 1800, 2200 or 2500 mg of technical amitraz/kg and 50, 100, 250, 500, 750 or 1000 mg of amitraz/kg in a veterinary formulation. They were divided into 2 groups and each group was divided into 5 replicate groups containing 10 chicks. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between antibiotic resistance patterns among Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica Serovar Enteritidis isolates (Salmonella Enteritidis) of human and poultry origin. Antibiotic resistance of 97 Salmonella Enteritidis isolates from 25 chicken meat, 25 chicken intestine and 47 human fecal samples was examined using the National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards (NCCLS, 1997) disk diffusion method. The death kinetics of Escherichia coli O157:H7, E. coli type 1 and total coliforms after irradiation treatment in minced beef were evaluated to analyze the effect of increasing irradiation doses. Irradiation doses ranging from 0.0 kGy to 1.5 kGy were evaluated for reducing numbers of E. coli during frozen storage conditions at –18 oC for 30 days. D_{10} values of E. coli O157:H7, E. coli type 1, and total coliforms were 0.245 kGy, 0.552 kGy and 0.293 kGy, respectively. The anaesthetic and cardiopulmonary effects of medetomidine-ketamine (MK) and xylazine-ketamine (XK) combinations were compared in rabbits. A total of 18 rabbits were randomly assigned to 2 different groups. The rabbits in the MK group (n = 9) were given 0.25 mg/kg of medetomidine and 50 mg/kg of ketamine intramuscularly. The XK group was given 4 mg/kg of xylazine and 50 mg/kg of ketamine via the same route. Crude and excretory/secretory (E/S) antigens of Fasciola hepatica were subjected to SDS-PAGE and Western blot analysis in order to identify protein bands that would enable the specific and sensitive immunodiagnosis of sheep. Sera from 20 sheep with natural infections of F. hepatica, Dicrocoelium dendriticum, Cyst hydatid, Cysticercus tenuicollis, Trichostrongylidae, Paramphistomum spp., and Trichuris spp. and the same number of sera naturally infected with the same helminths without F. hepatica were tested using Western blotting, and the bands obtained from positive and negative groups were compared. This case was determined accidentally in a 1.5-year-old, cross-breed male dog during a necropsy for an experimental study conducted in our laboratory, following a clinical examination as well as haematological, biochemical and urine analyses. This trial examined 1350 sex-separated broilers at 24 days of age. Chicks were fed standard broiler starter diet for the first 21 days. Isocaloric grower diets (16.84%, 18.00% and 19.46% crude protein, respectively) were offered to broilers housed in sex-separated and mixed-sex pens from days 24 to 45 of the experimental period. While the body weights of sex-separated and mixed-sex broilers were similar, diet protein level and sex had a significant effect on the body weight of broilers during the experimental period (P < 0.01). Male broilers consumed more feed and had better feed conversion than females (P < 0.01). However, separate sex rearing had no significant effect on feed consumption or feed conversion rate (P > 0.05). The anaesthetic effects of quinaldine sulphate (QS) together with diazepam (D) on tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) (20-25 g) were studied at different temperatures. The application of QS with D significantly increased the anesthesia level of QS in the fish. Depending on temperature, the fish entered light or deep anesthesia levels with the use of QS alone at 10 or 35 mg/l, compared to 5 or 20 mg/l when used together with D (1-2 mg/l). An investigation was carried out to determine whether transmission of passive immunity from the mother to the fry occurred in the guppy, Poecilia reticulata. Female guppies were immunized by an intraperitoneal injection of formalin-killed Aeromonas hydrophila bacterin. Agglutinating antibody titers and the precipitating antibody in the body fluid of female guppies and their fry were investigated. The protection against the A. hydrophila pathogen by maternal immunity was also tested. The effects of ethanol and 4-methyl pyrazole were investigated in the treatment of 30 dogs toxicated with antifreeze (AF). The AF toxication produced significant increases in blood urea, creatinin and potassium and a decrease in blood calcium levels. Calcium-oxalate monohydrate, which is pathognomic for AF toxication, was consistently seen in urine sediment. Ethanol was rarely effective on the multisystemic effects that occurred in dogs or ADH inhibition. CNS findings were also observed after ethanol administration. Some growth properties of 407 specimens of the mirror carp population introduced into Gelingüllü Dam Lake between 1998 and 2000 were studied in order to determine changes in growth over time. The data obtained were compared with those of other populations of the same species in other regions of Turkey. The age of the mirror carp in Gelingüllü Dam Lake ranged between I and V. The quality of imported mackerel (Scomber scombrus Linnaeus, 1758) was examined and the effect of different thawing methods on the quality was determined. The frozen samples were taken from 3 points: the first depot, the second depot and the retail sellers. The study was carried out in duplicate. The quality of the samples was determined according to sensory, chemical and microbiological analyses. The molecular weight and kinetic properties of pyruvate kinase purified from human normal and tumor breast tissues were studied and the activity levels of pyruvate kinase from normal and tumor breast tissues were compared. The presence of 2 forms of pyruvate kinase in human breast tissue was demonstrated by DEAE Sephadex A-50 chromatography. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of Leishmania infantum and Dirofilaria immitis infection in dogs housed outdoors in Aydın province and Selçuk in western Turkey. Anti-Leishmania antibodies were evaluated in sera samples by IFA and ELISA techniques. The presence of D. immitis microfilariae was determined in blood samples by use of the modified Knott’s test. Using the IFA and ELISA on 158 dogs surveyed, 5 (3.2%) were positive for anti-Leishmania antibodies while 22 (13.9%) were found infected with D. immitis. The effects of different nitrite doses (50, 100, 150 and 200 ppm NaNO_2) and starter culture (Lactobacillus plantarum + Staphylococcus carnosus, a commercial preparation) on the growth of Listeria monocytogenes in sucuk (Turkish dry fermented sausage) were investigated. The initial inoculation of the L. monocytogenes was 10^4 cfu/g for each sucuk dough mix. At the beginning of the ripening period in sucuk samples containing different amounts of NaNO_2 and without starter culture, L. monocytogenes growth was observed. Phylogenetic relationships in some Turkish dog breeds were investigated to determine protein polymorphisms by electrophoretic analysis. Blood samples were collected from 276 dogs including the Kangal, Akbash and German Shepherd as well as Doberman Pinscher, Setter, Pointer and Labrador breeds. Enzymes and proteins were separated electrophoretically using isoelectrofocusing gel, starch gel and polyacrylamide gel. Polymorphism on albumin (Alb), postalbumin-1 (Poa-1), postalbumin-3 (Poa-3), transferrin (Tf), and esterase (ArE) loci was detected, while no polymorphism was observed on the hemoglobin (Hb) locus. To study the effect of acute fluoride poisoning on nitric oxide and methemoglobin formation, 250 mg/kg bw sodium fluoride was applied alone and verapamil was applied together with fluoride. Blood nitric oxide (Griess reaction) and calcium levels; hemoglobin, methemoglobin and hematocrit values; and erythrocyte counts were determined and compared with those of the controls. After the fluoride application it was found that there was a relative relationship between the increase in nitric oxide and methemoglobin levels and the decrease in calcium, hemoglobin and hematocrit levels and erythrocyte count. The cardiopulmonary and clinical effects of the infusion of pentobarbital sodium in combination with fentanyl for long-term anaesthesia in 9 pigs were investigated. Pigs were premedicated with i.m. atropine at a dose of 0.05 mg/kg and azaperon at a dose of 2 mg/kg. General anaesthesia was induced with i.v. thiopental sodium at a dose of 3.3 mg/kg. The aim of this study was to determine the presence of Listeria monocytogenes, Yersinia enterocolitica and Salmonella enteritidis in 123 liquid whole quail eggs. The method suggested by USDA-FSIS was used for the isolation and identification of L. monocytogenes. S. enteritidis was identified and sero-grouped by co-agglutination test and slide agglutination test. Y. enterocolitica was isolated in Trypticase-Soy Broth, with bile-oxalate-sorbose medium for enrichment. Both enrichment cultures were plated on Yersinia Selective Agar Base containing cefsulodin, irgasan and novobiocin (CIN Agar). No Yersinia was detected among the natural flora of the quail eggs. The nutrient composition, and feed value of cactus were evaluated through total collection and nylon bag techniques. In the first trial conducted with 3 Chios rams, digestion coefficients of dry matter, organic matter, crude protein, ether extracts, crude fiber and nitrogen-free extracts of cactus leaves (cladodes) and cactus silage were found to be 57.57, 79.20, 72.69, 79.13, 27.95 and 84.14%; 57.32, 69.40, 33.21, 90.10, 13.08 and 78.45%, respectively. The contents of digestible protein, ether exctracts, fiber and nitrogen-free extracts (dry matter basis) were as 3.55, 1.61, 6.77 and 63.33%; 2.14, 1.78, 7.71 and 52.35%, respectively. Microbial gas production (MGP), fermentation kinetics and DM loss of crop silages made from 7 different plant families (barley/pea, clover, grass, kale, lotus, lucerne, sainfoin) and 10 different refusals were determined. The pressure transducer technique (PTT) was used to measure the microbial gas production of fresh and ground silages and refusal samples at regular intervals throughout the 120 h incubation. The MGP of fresh and ground silages were similar (r^2 = 0.90). The maximum gas production was obtained from kale for ground and fresh silages whilst grass silage yielded the maximum gas pool for refusals. No differences were found between …
