Effect Of Ultrasound Treatment On Milk Homogenisation And Particle Size Distribution Of Fat, M. Fati̇h Ertugay, Mustafa Şengül, Memnune Şengül

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The effect of ultrasound treatment on milk homogenisation was studied. A microscope, equipped with a camera and ocular micrometer, was used to determine the diameters of fat globules and to evaluate the homogenisation efficiency of milk samples homogenised by using ultrasonic and conventional homogeniser. It was found that ultrasound treatment with high amplitude (power) had an important effect on milk homogenisation compared with conventional homogenisation. As exposure times and power levels increased, homogenisation efficiency also rose. Karyotype Analysis In Alburnus Heckeli (Battalgil, 1943) From Lake Hazer, Süleyman Gül, Ahmet Çolak, İlhan Sezgi̇n, Bertal Kaloğlu

Karyotype analysis was performed on Alburnus heckeli (Battalgil, 1943) (Fam: Cyprinidae) by investigating the number and structures of its chromosomes. The fish used in this study were caught with fishing nets in Lake Hazer and were taken to our laboratory. Fish were injected intraperitoneally with doses of 0.01 ml/g body weight of 0.6% colchicine solution and left for 190 min before sacrificing. It was determined by metaphase investigation that A. heckeli has 2n = 50 chromosomes. Performance And Some Digesta Parameters Of Broiler Chickens Given Low Or High Viscosity Wheat-Based Diets With Or Without Enzyme Supplementation, Mevlüt Günal, Sulhatti̇n Yaşar, John Mike Forbes

The influence of 2 enzyme supplements for diets based on wheat with high or low viscosity on performance and some intestinal parameters of male broiler chickens were investigated. The experiment was of 2 x 3 factorial design, with 2 types of wheat (high or low viscosity) and 3 enzyme treatments (none, Avizyme 1300-xylanase or Avizyme 1500-amylase). Ileal digesta viscosity was significantly (P < 0.029) higher in birds fed with high viscous wheat than with low viscous wheat. Ileal digesta viscosity (P < 0.001) and dry matter content (P < 0.002) were significantly reduced by both enzyme preparations. Body weight gain, feed intake, dry matter intake, feed conversion ratio, DM retention and wet or dry excreta output were not significantly (P > 0.05) affected by all treatments. There were no significant interactions (P > 0.05) between the effects of wheat type and enzyme supplementation. Fertilization triggers Ca^{2+} increase and alkalization in the eggs of some species such as the frog. Ooplasmic Ca^{2+} increase triggers fertilization potential (FP), and alkalization can have a permissive effect in Ca^{2+} increase. It can be expected that pH regulation in the egg can affect both ooplasmic Ca^{2+} levels and the events triggered by increasing Ca^{2+}. Various BSA (bovine serum albumin) levels and media effects on development of 2-cell stage mouse embryos in in vitro culture were investigated in this 2 stage study. In the first stage, 1400 2-celled mouse embryos were cultured in 2 various BSA-bearing culture media for 96 h and directly observed microscopically. In the second stage, 1024 2-celled mouse embryos cultured for the same period and cell numbers (nuclei of cells) were determined by staining techniques. A new medium prepared from ram horn hydrolysate was utilized for the enumeration of aerobic bacteria from environmental samples. First, horns were ground and 35 g of horn flour was hydrolyzed chemically. The hydrolyzed material was completed to 400 ml with deionized water and this resulting solution was termed ram horn hydrolysate (RHH). Some hematological and biochemical parameters were determined in blood specimens collected from 16 clinically healthy gazelles (Gazella subgutturosa). They are bred in a large enclosed area in which they roam freely in Ceylanpınar, Şanlıurfa, Turkey. An indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was developed for the detection of IgG serum antibodies to swine Sendai virus. To evaluate the preliminary potential of ELISA, sera from 10 healthy pigs and 34 sera from finishing pigs suffering from respiratory signs were tested. The results were compared with those obtained from the same sera by hemagglutination inhibition assay.

The objectives of this experiment were to induce prostate atrophy by ligating prostate vessels and nerves and evaluate the histological changes in the prostates. Animal material consisted of 10 normal (healthy) crossbred dogs. The branches of the prostate artery, prostate veins, prostate innervating nerves, and hypogastric and pelvic nerves were ligated and then cut for each of the dogs under general anesthesia. Three months after surgery, the dogs were euthanased by with an overdose of sodium pentobarbital. The development and extent of quinolone-resistance in broiler isolates of campylobacters over a 15-year period was investigated. Minimal inhibitory concentrations of enrofloxacin, ciprofloxacin and nalidixic acid for 567 Campylobacter jejuni and 233 Campylobacter coli strains were determined by the agar dilution method. Of the strains, 180, 420 and 200 were isolated during 1987, 1992 and 2000, respectively. Enrofloxacin or ciprofloxacin resistance was not found in isolates from 1987. The first fluoroquinolone resistance (1.4% to enrofloxacin and 1.2% to ciprofloxacin) appeared in strains isolated in 1992, approximately 2 years after the licensing of enrofloxacin in Turkey. Weighing data from 389 broiler carcasses and parts formed the research material. The carcasses were divided into 6 different groups according to their weight. Cutting up shrinkage and percentage rates of the parts in the total weight were determined. Gross and net changes in enterprise income were determined according to the summer and winter prices of the whole body and parts. Small pieces of tissue from 5 adult geese (Anser anser) pancreases were dissected under deep ether anaesthesia. Sections were stained with Crossmon's connective tissue stain for general observations and Gomori's method for pancreatic islet cells. Twenty-five young budgerigars that died with the complaints of abdominal distension and crop swelling were examined pathologically. One hundred and twelve, 8-19-day-old chicks died at the same aviary with the same clinical symptoms over 16 months; the morbidity and mortality rate was 100%. Ascites, hydropericardium, crop and oesophagus ulcers, cardiomegaly, splenomegaly, hepatomegaly and focal hepatic necroses were the predominant necroscopic findings. The histopathological examination revealed characteristic intranuclear inclusion bodies in the liver, kidney, spleen, lung, oesophagus, crop, brain, pancreas, heart, gut, thymus and bone marrow. A young dog was examined because of regurgitating at the time of weaning to solid food. The dog was thin, underweight and had a sparse hair coat and distended abdomen. The cervical oesophagus was palpable as a flaccid, air-filled tube in the neck. Cardiac murmurs were not detected on auscultation of the thorax. A test meal of dog food was given and the dog regurgitated masticated, nondigested food a few minutes after eating. Meningitis Associated With Brucella Abortus In An Aborted Bovine Foetus, Cengi̇z Çeti̇n, İ. Taci̇ Cangül, Mehmet Akan, Ebru Özel, Ahmet Akkoç

In this study, the brain and other organs from an aborted bovine foetus were examined histopathologically and microbiologically. In addition, a serum sample from the aborting cow was examined serologically. A granulomatous inflammation, characterised by the infiltration of lymphocytes, plasma cells with some neutrophils and macrophages was observed in the meninges of the brain, liver and kidney. Brucella abortus biovar 1 was isolated in pure culture from the brain and other organs. The serum sample was positive for brucellosis. These findings indicate that Brucella abortus is a pathogen capable of inducing meningitis in bovine foetuses.

This study concerns an investigation of the growth properties of Sander lucioperca (L., 1758) living in Hirfanlı dam constructed on the Kızılırmak river. It was observed that 326 pikeperch (Sander lucioperca (L., 1758)) caught between August 1996 and July 1997 ranged between I and V years of age. The fork length and weight of the population were 105-529 mm and 12-1520 g. The length (L)-weight (W) relation and the condition factor were W = 0.00001049 L^{3.07} and 0.986, respectively.

Stomach contents and feeding features of Silurus glanis living in Hirfanlı Dam Lake were investigated. Recognizable organisms were found in the stomachs of 91 Silurus glanis out of 162 caught between September 1996 and August 1997. The stomach contents of Silurus glanis and their levels were as follows: Gammarus (21.87%), Odonata (19.79%), Sander lucioperca (19.79%), Tinca tinca (18.76%), Silurus glanis (1.04%) and Gastropoda (1.04%). In addition, it was noted that 1.04% of the organisms found in the stomachs of Silurus glanis were Homoptera and 2.08% were the parasite Platyhelminthes.

A Karyological Analysis Of Garra Rufa (Heckel, 1843) (Pisces, Cyprinidae) From The Eastern Mediterranean River Basin In Turkey, Serap Ergene Gözükara, Tolga Çavaş

A cytogenetic investigation on 12 Garra rufa (Heckel, 1843) specimens, from Müftü stream, was carried out by a slight modification of the conventional air-dried technique, using gill epithelial cells. The diploid chromosome number of this species was 2n = 44, comprising 22 metacentric and 20 submetacentric chromosomes and 2 acrocentric chromosome carrying satellites (NF = 85). A haploid idiogram, based on the chromosome measurements, was prepared. A detailed standard karyotype of G. rufa was established for the first time in this study.

This is due to the number of different ways in which sugar monomers may be linked to each other regarding linkage position, anomeric configuration, pyranosidic or furanosidic ring form and chain branching. It has been proposed that these factors contribute to the exquisite potential of oligosaccharides to establish a code system of biological information. The Determination Of Microbial Flora, Water Activity And Chemical Analyses In Smoked, Canned Mussels (Mytilus Galloprovincialis, L.), Gülgün F. Ünal Şengör, Hani̇fe Kalafatoğlu, Hüseyi̇n Gün

This study reports the water activity, moisture, sodium chloride, pH, acidity, vinegar, total plate count, fecal coliform, coliform and Clostridium botulinum of canned mussels processed by 2 different smoking techniques. The results indicated that the average measured water activity was 0.971 ± 0.001 for liquid smoked canned mussel with curry sauce and 0.982 ± 0.001 for traditional smoked mussel. The moisture of samples varied between 69.440% for traditional smoked mussel and 76.35% for salting before traditional smoking. The moisture, salt, pH, acidity and vinegar were significantly different in some of the groups (P < 0.05). Mussels smoked using liquid and oak wood sawdust, in tomato puree sauce, curry sauce and sunflower oil sauce, were sterilized at 120 ± 1 ºC and 5.2 ± 0.1 F_0. In none of the products was swelling or C. botulinum detected at 37 ºC or 55 ºC. Prior to canning, the mussels were investigated for fecal coliform, coliform and total plate count and found to carry no risk in terms of these parameters.

The study material was composed of nine dogs 2.5-9-month-old which were brought to the Clinic of the Surgery Department, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Ankara between 1992 and 2001 with proximal tibial fractures diagnosed with clinical and radiographic examinations. The incidence of proximal tibial fractures was much lower than that of other tibial fractures in this period. Gyrodactylus arcuatus Bychowsky, 1933 was identified on the three-spined stickleback, Gasterosteus aculeatus L., 1758 in the present study, which was carried out between January and May 2000. A total of 151 fish specimens were examined. The infestation prevalence and mean intensity levels were 80.2% and 35.44 ± 8.87 parasites per fish, respectively. Many chemical anesthetics and drugs have been used in fish stripping, surgery and transportation, but their undesirable side effects on the body metabolism during treatment are not usually taken into consideration.
