The Estimation Of Glomerular Filtration Rates Using Endogenous Creatinine Clearance In Nine Dogs, Chollada Buranakarl, Wanchai Yenpetch, Siram Suvarnavibhaja

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

The objective of this study was to estimate the glomerular filtration rates of normal dogs using the clearance of endogenous creatinine, and comparing it to the clearance of exogenous creatinine. Nine healthy dogs, of both sexes, were used in this study. The results showed a significant relationship, with a correlation coefficient = 0.714 (p<0.05). The regression line was an endogenous creatinine clearance = (-0.803 + 0.677) x exogenous creatinine clearance. The use of endogenous creatinine clearance is a simple and convenient method without the need to administer any substances and can be used to evaluate renal function in clinical practice.

The Detection Of Ifn-Γ Positive Cells In The Lymphoid Tissues Of Prrsv-Infected Pigs Using Different Strains, For Infection, Tuddow Thaiwong, Chanis Leetheraprasert, Chaiwat Winyoonunthakul, Anudep Rungsipipat, Supradit Wangnaitham, Roongroje Thanawongnuwech

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Archived paraffin-embedded lymphoid tissue samples from seventy five experimental PRRSV-infected pigs were examined for PRRSV antigen and IFN-γ positive cells, using immunohistochemistry. Lymphoid tissues (5 pigs/group) including spleen, tracheobronchial lymph nodes and tonsil came from negative control pigs (group 1), low virulence strain of PRRSV (RespPRRS/ReproTM, modified-live virus vaccine) infected pigs (group 2) and high virulence strain of PRRSV (VR-2385) infected pigs(group 3). They were necropsied at 3, 7,10, 14 or 28 days post-inoculation (DPI). The study was conducted in 2 parts. The first was the development of a milking machine for sows, composed of a vacuum generator providing 33-38 cmHg, a pulse rate of 30-45/mins and a set of 2 teat cups to fit the sows teats. The results from 34 milkings at farm 1 and 28 milkings at farm 2 showed that the amount of colostrum obtained was 96.77±38.63 ml and 114.93±75.09 ml, respectively, taking an average of 19 mins/milking with no damage to the udder. 270, 3-month old, Black Tiger Shrimps (Penaeus monodon) (average 24.55 grams b.w.) were fed for 5 days with oxytetracycline (OTC) medicated feed (coated with squid oil) at 2000 milligrams of OTC per kilogram of feed (2000 ppm). OTC in the hepatopancreas and muscle was measured using High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) (96 percentage recovery). Samples were taken 0.5, 1, 4, 12 and 24 hours after first administration and 1, 5, 7, 10,14, 21 days after the 5-day treatment. Bovine herpesvirus 1 (BHV-1), like other Alphaherpesvirinae subfamily members, establishes latency in sensory neurons. The latency-related (LR) RNA is abundantly expressed during latency, and expression of an LR protein is required for the latency reactivation cycle in cattle. Within LR promoter sequences, a 135-aminoacid open reading frame (ORF) was identified, ORF-E, that is antisense to the LR RNA. ORF-E is also downstream of the gene encoding the major viral transcriptional activator, bICP0. Strand-specific reverse transcription-PCR demonstrated that a transcript containing ORF-E was consistently expressed in trigeminal ganglia (TG) of latently infected calves, productively infected cultured cells, and acutely infected calves. …

French Heartworm is the common name for a parasitic disease affecting foxes, dogs, and other members of the dog family. Caused by the nematode (worm) Angiostrongylus vasorum, this disease was first thought to exist in France in the mid 1800's. It is now considered to exist generally in Europe but has not been reported in North America other than on the Island of Newfoundland, with the exception of infected animals imported from Europe but diagnosed in North America. The first case recorded in Newfoundland was in Aquaforte (Avalon Peninsula) in 1973.

Bartonella henselae is the main agent of cat scratch disease in humans and domestic cats are the main reservoir of this bacterium. We conducted a serosurvey to investigate the role of American wild felids as a potential reservoir of Bartonella species. A total of 479 samples (439 serum samples and 40 Nobuto strips) collected between 1984 and 1999 from pumas (Felis concolor) and 91 samples (58 serum samples and 33 Nobuto strips) collected from bobcats (Lynx rufus) in North America, Central America and South America were screened for B. henselae antibodies. We isolated and sequenced two complete endogenous feline leukemia viruses (enFeLVs), designated enFeLV-AGTT and enFeLV-GGAG. In enFeLV-AGTT, the open reading frames are reminiscent of a functioning FeLV genome, and the 5′ and 3′ long terminal repeat sequences are identical. Neither endogenous provirus is genetically fixed in cats but polymorphic, with 8.9 and 15.2% prevalence for enFeLV-AGTT and enFeLV-GGAG, respectively, among a survey of domestic cats. Neither provirus was found in the genomes of related species of the Felis genus, previously shown to harbor enFeLVs. The absence of mutational divergence, polymorphic incidence in cats, and absence in related species suggest that …

Whereas M tuberculosis infection is largely spread from human to human, M bovis infection has been identified as a zoonotic disease with most cases of human infection attributable to animal sources. Cattle are a major reservoir of Escherichia coli 0157:H7, an important zoonotic pathogen that causes hemorrhagic colitis and hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). Colonization of cattle occurs predominantly in the large intestine, and may especially target follicle-associated epithelium (FAE) in the terminal rectum. Bacterial colonization involves induction of attaching- effacing (A/E) lesions, mediated by type III secreted proteins and an outer membrane protein called intimin. ToxB, encoded on plasmid p0157, contributes to adherence of E. coli 0157:H7 through promotion of the production and/or secretion of type III secreted proteins. The latency-related (LR) gene of bovine herpesvirus 1 (BHV-1) is abundantly expressed during latency. A mutant BHV-1 strain that contains three stop codons at the 5′ terminus of the LR gene (LR mutant) does not reactivate from latency. This study demonstrates that the LR mutant does not express open reading frame 2 or an adjacent reading frame that lacks an initiating ATG (reading frame C). Since the LR mutant and wild-type BHV-1 express similar levels of LR RNA, we conclude that LR protein expression plays an important role in regulating the latency reactivation cycle in cattle.

This experiment was performed to study gross and microscopic lung lesions after endotracheal inoculation with Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae (A. pleuropneumoniae) serotype 1 in twenty-four guinea pigs. Four-six hours post inoculation, clinical signs of respiratory distress and epistasis were observed. Most of the infected animals suddenly died during this time. The differences between the pulmonary lesions were evaluated. In this experiment, the lesions of peracute infection by A. pleuropneumoniae were induced within 4-6 hours and the lesions of subacute infection, characterized by fibrinopurulent pleuritis were observed in surviving animals 18-20 hours post inoculation. The objective of the present study was to investigate survival rates, growth rates, weaning weights and the effect of colostrum in low birth weight piglets. The study was made on 288 piglets with a birth weight below 1 kg. After the individual birth weights were measured, the piglets were divided into 2 treatment groups, a control group (the piglets received colostrums after birth from their dams according to the usual management practice) and a colostrum supplemented group (piglets received an extra 20 ml of colostrum within 12 hrs of birth). A four years old, mixed breed cat was reported to have a Joyeuxiella sp. tapeworm infection. Upon necropsy, The most striking lesion was a diffuse chronic catarrhal enteritis along with a heavy tapeworm infection in the small intestine. The tapeworms were identified as the genus Joyeuxeilla, Family Dilepididae, based on the morphology which were comprised of 2 sets of reproductive organs in a mature segment and only one egg in each egg capsule, in the gravid segments. This is the first report of Joyeuxiella sp. tapeworm infection in Thailand.

Twenty, 3-week-old, crossbred pigs from a herd free from porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) were inoculated intranasally and intramusculary (1 ml each 102.5 TCID50/ml) with Thai PRRSV isolates of the US genotype (01NP1) (n=9) or the EU genotype (02SB3) (n=8). The objective of this study was to determine the frequencies of the genetic variants of the beta and kappa casein gene in 87 crossbred dairy cattle. Beta and kappa casein genotypes were investigated, the first by an allele-specific polymerase chain reaction (ASPCR) and the second by a polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP). Three beta casein alleles of A1, A2 and B were found, with frequencies of 0.30, 0.61 and 0.09, respectively. The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

In the present study, we report on the level of norepinephrine and epinephrine in healthy cattle, using high-performance liquid chromatography with an electrochemical detector (HPLC-EC). Sixteen crossbred Holstein dairy cows (> 87.5% Holstein) and fifteen swamp buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis), which included both sexes, were included. In the dairy cows, the plasma norepinephrine and epinephrine concentrations (mean ± SE) were 3.89 ± 0.51 nM and 0.82 + 0.12 nM, respectively. The concentrations of plasma norepinephrine and epinephrine in buffaloes (mean ± SE) were 3.75 ± 0.51 and 1.82 ± 0.45 nM, respectively.

The objective of this study was to estimate the genetic parameters and breeding values for milk yield, protein yield and protein percentage in 87 crossbred dairy cattle with pedigree and production records and beta and kappa casein genotypes. Karyotypes of the crossbred progeny of wild and zebu cattle, born from the insemination of zebu dams with deep frozen semen from gaur (Bos gaurus) and banteng (Bos javanicus) sires were studied. The crossbred progeny (F1) born from the gaur sire and zebu dams revealed a diploid chromosome number of 2n=58. Fifty-four acrocentric and 2 submetacentric autosomes were found, sex chromosomes being submetacentric and metacentric in the male and submetacentric in the female. Blood cells and thrombocytes from five crocodiles, three males and two females, were studied by both light and transmission electron microscopes (TEM). The blood cells could be categorized into red blood cells, white blood cells and thrombocytes. The nucleated red blood cells were oval in shape and the TEM study revealed vacuoles in the cytoplasm. The white blood cells fell into two groups; one with granules and the other without granules. The granulocytes were heterophils, eosinophils and basophils. Trifluralin, a herbicide, was observed for it's side effects when used, extralabel, as an ectoparasiticide in shrimp farming. Black tiger shrimp were exposed to trifluralin at a therapeutic level, commonly employed in shrimp farming, 0.1 or 0.2 ppm, for up to 96 hrs. Shrimp were examined 96 hrs after the primary dosage of trifluralin. The total haemocyte count in the exposed shrimp was not different from the control, unexposed shrimp. A significant reduction of muscle acetylcholinesterase was found in all exposed shrimp (p<0.05). Some of the exposed shrimp also demonstrated clinical signs of cholinergic overload characterized as abnormal movement. This study suggests sublethal effects when trifluralin is used for the treatment of shrimp ectoparasitic disease.
