Evaluation Of The Photocopy Method For Counting Puntius Conchonius’S Eggs, Şehri̇ban Çek, Mahmut Ali̇ Gökçe

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The photocopy technique was developed to count fish eggs. Fecundity of the rosy barb Puntius conchonius was determined by both actual counts and the photocopy method. Egg stripping and fertilisation were performed manually. After fertilisation, water-hardened eggs were photocopied. White circles were counted and recorded as viable eggs and dark dots counted as dead eggs. Egg numbers estimated by this technique were significantly correlated with those estimated by actual counting (r = 0.999; P < 0.05). The advantage of the photocopy method is that it is a relatively fast method without significant loss in accuracy and it is cheaper than the other currently used methods.

Effects Of Ascorbic Acid On The Performance And Some Blood Parameters Of Japanese Quails Reared Under Hot Climate Conditions, Mehmet Avci, Muğdat Yertürk, Oktay Kaplan

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The effects of ascorbic acid on the performance and some blood parameters of Japanese quails reared under hot conditions were investigated. Three hundred Japanese quails, 7 days of age, were randomly divided into one control and two experimental groups, comprising five replicates of 20 birds each. Ascorbic acid (500 and 1000 mg/kg) was given to the experimental groups. The body weight gain increased significantly (P < 0.05) in the group given 500 mg/kg of ascorbic acid until the fourth week. Feed consumption also increased (P < 0.05), depending on the quantity of ascorbic acid supplementation until the fourth week. However, ascorbic acid did not affect the concentrations of blood pH, PCO_{2}, sodium (Na), potassium (K), hematocrit (PCV), bicarbonate (HCO_{3}), or hemoglobin (Hb). In conclusion, 500 mg/kg of ascorbic acid may be added to the quail diet to prevent heat stress until the fourth week.

Efficacy Of Tribasic Copper Chloride (Tbcc) To Reduce The Harmful Effects Of Aflatoxin In Broilers, Sefa Çeli̇k, Zeynep Erdoğan, Suat Erdoğan, Ramazan Bal

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of copper as tribasic copper chloride on serum biochemical values and growth performance of broilers intoxicated with aflatoxins. Aflatoxins significantly decreased the level of albumin (P < 0.001), total protein (P < 0.001) and total cholesterol (P < 0.01), and increased the activities of alanine amino transferase, L-lactic dehydrogenase and alkaline phosphatase (P £ 0.001) in serum. These AF-induced changes were significantly improved by adding tribasic copper chloride to the diet. The decrease in serum copper concentration induced by aflatoxin was reversed by tribasic copper chloride. Serum zinc concentrations were not affected in tribasic copper chloride and tribasic copper chloride plus aflatoxin groups. Serum iron levels decreased in all the treatment groups significantly (P < 0.05). Aflatoxins caused significant decrease in the body weight gain and significant increase in the feed conversion ratio. Adverse effects of aflatoxins on feed conversion ratio were reversed by tribasic copper chloride supplementation to the diet. It is suggested that tribasic copper chloride might be used for reducing the adverse effects of aflatoxins in broiler production.

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The aim of this study was to investigate environmental factors affecting milk yield and fertility traits of Simmental cows raised at the Kazova state farm and the phenotypic correlation between these traits from 1473 records between 1992 and 2001. The least square means of 305-days milk yield, lactation duration, dry period, service period, calving interval, gestation length and number of inseminations per conception (NIPC) were 4700 kg, 300 days, 81 days, 94 days, 379 days, 283.6 days and 1.76, respectively. The effect of calving year on milk yield and fertility traits was statistically significant (P < 0.001). The effect of calving age on gestation length and milk yield was also statistically significant (P < 0.001-P < 0.05). The effect of calving season on gestation length, 305-days milk yield and NIPC was also statistically significant (P < 0.001-P < 0.05). Birth type did not significantly affect any traits, except for gestation length. The phenotypic correlations between 305-days milk yield and lactation duration (0.39), between NIPC and service period (0.81), between NIPC and calving interval (0.77), between calving interval and service period (0.96) and between calving interval and gestation length (0.12) were statistically significant (P < 0.001). Correlations between milk yield and fertility traits (0.09-0.77) were statistically significant (P < 0.001-P < 0.05), except for gestation length. These results are acceptable and it can be concluded that Simmental cattle are raised successfully on this farm and under Turkish conditions.

The purification included 4 steps: preparation of homogenate, ammonium sulfate fractionation, 2', 5'-ADP Sepharose-4B affinity chromatography, and gel filtration chromatography. GR was obtained with a yield of 14.1% having a specific activity of 47.27 EU/mg proteins. Optimal pH, stable pH, and optimal temperature were 8.0, 5.5, and 60 °C, respectively. K_M and V_max values for NADPH and GSSG substrates were 0.0258 and 0.0239 mM, and 0.266 and 0.255 EU/ml, respectively. The overall purification was about 1477-fold for liver GR. The enzyme activity was measured spectrophotometrically at 340 …

Immunohistochemical Localization Of Fsh Cells In The Pars Distalis Of The Pituitary Gland In Five-Month-Old Laying Hens, Hati̇ce Erdost

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The present study was performed to determine the structural differences and immunohistochemical distribution of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) producing cells in the pars distalis region of the pituitary glands of 5 month-old laying hens, using the labeled avidin-biotin method. Hens begin to lay eggs at approximately the age of 5 months. It was observed that gonadotrophic cells containing FSH were present in both the cephalic and caudal zones and were densely distributed throughout the pars distalis. They appeared to be arranged in either cords or follicles in which branching and anastomosing occurred as well as being found as separate cells. The …
