Aspergillosis And Gastric Impaction In An Ostrich, Azi̇z Arda Sancak, Jale Paracikoğlu

It is inevitable to encounter many diseases of ostriches in Turkey as a consequence of the rapid expansion of ostrich farming and flocks in this country. Aspergillus fumigatus was isolated from the lungs and air sacs of a 3-month-old, male, blue-neck ostrich. In postmortem examination, the ingestion of a large amount of gravel was noted. The accumulated gravel had led to an occlusion of the passage between the proventriculus and gizzard. This work appears to be the first report of aspergillosis and gastric impaction developing together and leading to death in an ostrich.

The organs of an aborted equine fetus were examined histopathologically and microbiologically. Diffuse, mild cellular infiltration of neutrophils, lymphocytes and plasma cells was observed in the lamina propria of the intestine. In addition, bacterial colonies were seen in the intestinal content, wall of intestine and liver. Streptococcus equi subsp. zooepidemicus was isolated in pure culture from all organs. This is the first report of the isolation of S. equi subsp. zooepidemicus from an aborted equine fetus in Turkey.

Unilateral uterine prolapse that occurred immediately after parturition was diagnosed in a 15-month-old cat brought to the clinics of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Ankara University. Depending on clinical and ultrasonographic examination findings, the other uterine horn was though to be invaginated into the prolapsed horn. To purpose of treatment, ovariohysterectomy was performed. During laparotomy, the non-pregnant right uterine horn was seen to be invaginated into the pregnant uterine horn.

The economic importance of lameness in dairy cattle has newly been recognized in Turkey. Lameness incidence in Turkey has been reported to be between 13% and 58%, which is similar to that of other countries where 4% and 55% incidence rates have been reported. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of sole lesions associated with subclinical laminitis in the hooves of dairy cattle in Van, Turkey. Human and canine visceral leishmaniasis cases have been reported from Kuşadası, a town in western Turkey, since 1993. In order to better understand the epidemiology of canine visceral leishmaniasis (CanVL) in the region, we aimed: (i) to determine the prevalence of CanVL in Kuşadası using a randomly selected dog population and (ii) to measure the effect of case control on the prevalence of the disease. Determination Of The Recruitment To Stock And Reproduction Period For Flounder (Platichthys Flesus Luscus Pallas, 1811) Along The Trabzon-Rize Coast, Eastern Black Sea, Erhan Çi̇loğlu

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The length and weight distribution of flounder (Platichthys flesus luscus Pallas, 1811) were 14.2-34.1 cm and 28.879-611.0 g, respectively. The samples were distributed between the 0 and VII age groups. Von Bertalanffy growth parameters for flounder were L_t = 41.241[1-e^{-0.161(t+3.240)}] for females, L_t= 33.567[1-e^{-0.181(t+3.525)}] for males and L_t = 40.577[1-e^{-0.142(t+3.105)}] for the sexes combined. Reproduction took place from December to March but peaked in December. Two recruitment periods were determined for flounder: the first was January to July, and the second August to November. The proportions of recruitment in the first and second periods were 68.13% and 31.87%, respectively.

The sex distribution, growth in length and weight, growth rates and condition factors of Chub (Leuciscus cephalus (L., 1758)) in Karakaya dam lake were examined. Females made up 63.64% and males 36.37% (1.75:1) of 527 samples. The females and males were in the I-VI and I-V age groups, respectively. The reproductive properties of L. cephalus such as spawning period, age at attainment of maturity, egg diameter and ovarium weight were investigated. Relationships Between Milk Yield And Udder Measurements In Brown Swiss Cows, Muammer Ti̇lki̇, Şeref İnal, Mehmet Çolak, Mustafa Gari̇p

The effects of udder and teat measurements on milk yield in Brown Swiss Cows were studied. The differences among the means for front and rear teat length, front and rear teat diameter, front and rear udder height, distance between front teats and mammary type scores in different lactation numbers were statistically significant (P < 0.001). Front and rear teat length, and front and rear udder height after milking were higher than before milking. Front and rear teat diameter, distance between front teats, distance between rear teats and distance between front and rear teats after milking were lower than before milking. Furthermore, 305-day milk yield and milk yield per milking were significantly positively correlated with distance between front and rear teats and mammary type scores before milking (P < 0.001). The mean values before milking for front and rear teat length, front and rear teat diameter, front and rear teat udder height, distance between front teats, distance between rear teats, distance between front and rear teats and mammary type scores at general lactation were 59.45 and 49.72 mm, 22.14 and 21.53 mm, 47.96 and 47.59 cm, 12.29 cm, 7.76 cm, 9.58 cm and 23.65, respectively. In conclusion, teat and udder measurements and mammary type scores significantly affected milk yield.

Stages of oocyte maturation in sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) gonads after LHRHa hormonal treatment were investigated. LHRHa was injected into sea bass broodstock with an oocyte diameter of 527-580 µm. A second injection was given 12 h after the first injection. For each injection a dose of 10 µg/kg was used. At 24 h, oil globules in oocytes were randomly distributed. These oil globules started to fuse and change to a spherical shape from an ellipsoidal shape at 36 and 42 h. Bioaccumulation of some heavy metals (Cd, Fe, Zn and Cu) in fresh parts of 2 bivalvia species (Pinctada radiata Leach, 1814 and Brachidontes pharaonis Fischer, 1870) was examined in samples collected between May, 1999, and April, 2000, in Akkuyu Bay (İçel, Turkey). Heavy metal contents in soft bodies were measured by an atomic absorption spectrophometer. The Effects Of Cadmium On Levels Of Glucose In Serum And Glycogen Reserves In The Liver And Muscle Tissues Of Cyprinus Carpio (L., 1758), Bedi̇i̇ Ci̇ci̇k, Kenan Engi̇n

The common carp (Cyprinus carpio L., 1758) was exposed to sublethal concentrations of cadmium (0.05, 0.1, 0.5 and 1.0 mgl^{-1}) for 10 days. The levels of serum glucose and glycogen reserves in the liver and muscle tissues were measured both in fish exposed and not exposed to Cd. The levels of glycogen reserves in the liver and muscle tissues were significantly (P < 0.05) decreased in fish exposed to sublethal concentrations of Cd compared with the levels measured in the control groups. The decrease in glycogen levels in the liver and muscle tissues under the highest metal concentration (1.0 mgl^{-1}) were 24% and 29%, respectively. The blood serum glucose levels of fish exposed to Cd were significantly (P < 0.05) increased compared with the levels measured in the control groups. This increase was correlated with the increase in water Cd concentrations.

Blood samples were collected from 305 cows in the province of Şanlıurfa for determining the seroprevalence of Neospora caninum. Serum samples were analyzed for antibodies against N. caninum antigen using a commercially competitive inhibition (CI) ELISA. Antibodies to N. caninum were found in 23 of the 305 (7.5%) cow sera based on ELISA test results. With regard to seropositivity, no significant difference was observed among the origin, animal breed, and age (P > 0.05).

Eleven slaughtered Holstein and 11 slaughtered Holstein x Anatolian black pregnant cows (10 female, 12 male fetuses) were studied. Gestational ages of the cattle ranged from 67 days to 245 days. The average ages for the first trimester and second trimester were 79.58 ± 3.04 and 113.89 ± 4.08 days, respectively. In this first attempt, 3 cultures failed and no metaphase could be obtained. The Effect Of Mad Cow (Bse) Scare On Beef Demand And Sales Loss: The Case Of İzmir, Bülent Mi̇ran, Sedef Akgüngör

This paper investigates the effect of the BSE scare on beef consumption due to the intense media coverage. Using monthly data, a beef demand model for January 1995-February 1997 period is estimated for İzmir Province. Beef sales dropped immediately after the media coverage on BSE in April 1996 and continued through June 1996 when the intense media coverage stopped. The econometric model reveals that beef sales in İzmir would have been 36.4% higher if the BSE crisis never occurred. The annual individual willingness to pay is $0.5224 per year to avoid consuming BSE contaminated meat.

Efficacy of commonly used selective supplements for detection of E. coli O157:H7 from ground beef was evaluated for suppression of sorbitol positive flora while supporting recovery of sorbitol negative flora. Selectivity of bile free modified E. coli broth (b-mEC) was not improved by the single addition of bile salts no. 3 (1.12 mg/ml), novobiocin (20 µg/ml), cefixime (0.05 µg/ml)-tellurite (2.5 µg/ml), or their combinations. The sorbitol positive flora was more resistant to the selective agents than sorbitol negatives. Sorbitol MacConkey agar and E. coli O157:H7 agar had almost equal selectivity. In this study Fe, Cu, Ni, Cr, Pb and Zn contents were determined in muscle, skin and gonads of two fish species (Mugil cephalus L. and Sparus aurata L.) caught at three stations in the İskenderun Bay of the Eastern Mediterranean coast of Turkey. Heavy metal concentrations varied significantly depending on the type of the tissue, fish species, and location of stations. It was aimed to describe some population charactersitics of Salmo trutta macrostigma from Fırnız Stream of the River Ceyhan. The age, growth, length-weight relationship and diet composition were investigated from May 2000 to February 2001. The ratio of male to female of 197 brown trout caught by electroshocker was 0.67:1.00 and their fork lengths varied from 8.0 to 48.5 cm and the majority of them were in the 11.0-17.0 cm length group. In the present study cloning of the NP gene in a cloning vector is reported. For this purpose, Vero cells were infected with rinderpest RBOK vaccine strain. Total RNA was obtained from the infected cells and reverse-transcription (RT) was performed to get cDNAs of NP gene. Afterwards, the NP gene was amplified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) with the primers specific to the NP gene. The NP gene, 1575 bp in length, was cloned into pGEM-3Zf (-) cloning vector. PCR screening and enzyme digestion assays carried out to verify the presence of the NP gene.

This study was performed to determine the thermal resistance of L. monocytogenes at different heat treatments in İnegöl meatballs. İnegöl meatballs were divided into three groups. The present work aimed to model the growth curves of male and female turkeys with respect to their live weight-age relationships and to determine a non-linear model explaining their growth curve better. For this purpose four different non-linear models were used to define growth curves of turkeys, namely Gompertz, Logistic, Morgan-Mercer-Flodin (MMF), and Richards. The coefficients of determination for these models were 0.9975, 0.9937, 0.9993, and 0.9966 for females and 0.9974, 0.9933, 0.9993, and 0.9969 for males, respectively. Considering model selection criteria, Gompertz, Logistic and Richards models seen to be suitable models for explaining Large White turkey growth.

This study was designed to determine the seroprevalence of brucellosis and leptospirosis in aborted dairy cattle. For this purpose, serum samples were collected from 163 aborted dairy cattle that had no history of vaccination against either brucellosis or leptospirosis. The antibodies against B. abortus were detected in these serum samples as 68.1%, 65.6%, 58.9% and 55.2%, respectively by the Competitive Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (C-ELISA), Complement Fixation Test (CFT), Rosebengal Plate Test (RBPT) and Serum Agglutination Test (SAT). Phenotypic Correlations Among Some Traits In Chinchilla Lanigera Produced In Turkey, Öznur Poyraz, Zehra Bozkurt, Esi̇n Ebru Onbaşilar

The aim of this study was to investigate the phenotypic correlations among some morphological and pelt traits in Chinchilla lanigera. Male chinchillas aged 9-12 months were used. The average body weight at pelting was 466.22 g, the body length was 23.66 cm, the head length was 8.76 cm, chest circumference was 17.65 cm and the pelt length was 32.39 cm. The phenotypic correlation coefficients between the body weight and the chest circumference, the ear length, the ear width and the tail length were 0.180, 0.294, 0.361 and 0.233, respectively (P < 0.01). The correlation coefficients between the body weight and pelt length and head length were found to be 0.160 and 0.150, respectively (P < 0.05). The correlation coefficients between the pelt length and body length, head length, ear length, fur hair lengths of back of neck, back and rump were found as 0.896, 0.615, 0.365, 0.212, 0.307 and 0.296, respectively (P < 0.01). In conclusion, performing selection using some morphological characteristics correlated highly with some pelt traits could contribute to improved fur quality for the production or breeding of chinchillas.

The aim of this study was to investigate whether vitamin E (VitE) and selenium (Se) or VitE plus Se have any the protective and/or augmented effects on cypermethrin (CYP)-induced oxidative stress in liver, brain, kidney and blood in rats. Rats were treated orally with daily 50 mg/kg (~ 1/4 ED50) of CYP in corn oil for five days after administrations of VitE (100 mg/kg sc.), Se (0.1 mg/kg, sc.) and VitE plus Se for three days. Different bony structures as scales, vertebrae, otoliths, opercles and subopercles of 156 red mullet (Mullus barbatus ponticus Essipov, 1927) sampled from the Black Sea were removed for age determination. Otoliths were read once by two experienced readers. However, due to the difficulty of interpretation of annuli on the otolith edge, the broken-burnt method was applied to the 61 otoliths. Broken-burnt otoliths were also read once by the same two experienced readers. The present study describes clinical, virological, histopathological, immunohistochemical and electron microscopic findings of pox infection encountered in a quail flock. Lesions consisted of single or multiple nodules with a crust in variable size of gray to yellow or dark brown discoloration on the comb, eyelids, and the other poorly feathered areas of the body. Histopathological changes consisted of hyperplastic epithelium overlying, with ballooning degeneration of keratinocytes, many of which had eosinophilic intracytoplasmic inclusion bodies (Bollinger bodies), and heterophilic infiltrations admixed with mononuclear cells extending into dermis. The possibilities of synchronizing lambing and increasing reproduction by using exogenous hormones in Karakaş ewes raised under rural farm conditions and growth characteristics of their lambs were investigated. 112 Karakaş ewes at 2-5 ages were randomly assigned into treatment (n = 45) and control (n = 67) groups during breeding season. Two burial chambers dating back to 1000 BC have been brought to light in the Van-Yoncatepe necropolis in Eastern Anatolia. In these two chambers (M5 and M6), plenty of skeletal remains belonging to dogs buried together with humans were discovered. The finds were a dog skeleton lying in-situ in burial chamber M5 and a number of bones scattered in three layers in burial chamber M6. This study was carried out in order to determine the effects of honeybee genotype and season on the acceptance rates of the larvae and royal jelly production. The cell builder colonies were prepared from the Caucasian (A. m. caucasica), Carniolan (A. m. carnica) and Mugla (A. m. anatoliaca) bees. One-day-old larvae were grafted into queen cell cups and they were placed in queenless and queenright cell builders.
