Prediction Of Dry Matter Intake And Dry Matter Digestibilities Of Some Forages Using The Gas Production Technique In Sheep, Adem Kamalak, Önder Canbolat, Yavuz Gürbüz, Osman Ozay
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Wheat straw, barley straw, alfalfa hay, alfalfa silage and maize silage were offered ad libitum to three male sheep, and daily dry matter intake (DMI) and apparent dry matter digestibility (DMD) were measured. Samples of forages were incubated with rumen fluid to determine gas production. Gas productions were measured at 3, 6, 12, 24, 48, 72 and 96, and gas production constants (a, b, c,) were described using the equation y = a + b (1 - e-^{ct}). Gas production at all incubation times and gas production constants (c, b and a+b) were significantly (P < 0.001) correlated to DMD or DMI. Although the gas production constant c explained 74% of the variation of DMD, the gas production constant b explained 92% of the variation of DMD. The gas production constants c and (a+b) in combination explained 96% of the variation of DMD. The gas production constants b and c alone explained 70% and 78% of the variation of DMI respectively. The gas production constants in combination explained 84-90% of the variation of DMI. It was concluded that the accuracy of predicting DMD or DMI can be increased when gas production constants are used in combination, and the in vitro gas production technique has good potentiality to predict DMD and DMI.

Toxoplasmosis is a common problem, accounting for significant morbidity in developing countries. Conventional treatments are associated with frequent relapses and with additional problems including undesirable side effects. Better-tolerated and more effective drugs are clearly needed. The aim of this study is to evaluate the in vitro efficacy of azithromycin and roxithromycin against Toxoplasma gondii using acridine orange in the fluorescence microscopic assay. It was found that azithromycin and roxithromycin had significant microbicidal activity (P < 0.05). In conclusion, this observation should be assessed carefully in future clinical trials involving a large number of cases with toxoplasmosis.

Effects Of Egg Weight And Length Of Storage Period On Hatchability And Subsequent Laying Performance Of Quail, Meti̇n Petek, Hasan Başpinar, M. Mustafa Oğan, Faruk Balci
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
This study was carried out to investigate the effects of hatching egg weight and length of egg storage period on hatchability and subsequent laying performance of quails. Eggs were collected from a quail flock (Coturnix coturnix Pharaoh) aged 17 weeks and classified into 4 groups on the basis of storage period 1, 3, 5, or 7 d. Prior to egg storage, the eggs in each group were further divided into egg weight treatment (small: 12.51 g). Hatchability of total and fertile eggs was affected significantly by hatching egg weight (P < 0.05) but was not affected significantly by the length of egg storage period. There was a decrease in egg production associated with increase in hatching egg weight. Egg production of quails hatched from stored eggs for 3 days was greater than the other groups. There was a significant interaction between hatching egg weight and length of egg storage for egg production. It was concluded that medium eggs can be hatched satisfactorily after 3 days storage for optimum egg production in quails.

This study presents the results of the analyses of the coprolite material found among the skeletal remains in M6, a burial chamber discovered in the necropolis of the Van-Yoncatepe Castle, which dates back to the beginning of the 1^{st} millennium BC (Early Iron Age). For this purpose, microbiological and parasitological examinations, as well as biochemical analyses have been carried out. Because the crystallisation values were so high, the parasite evidences could not been revealed. As a result of the microbiological examination, no micro-organisms were isolated. As for the biochemical analyses performed, the material was tested for glucose, uric acid, cholesterol, …

Gastrointestinal microbiota has been claimed to be affected by the diet consumed. In this study the effects of severe qualitative and quantitative protein malnutrition on cecal microbiota of male Wistar rats with or without neutrophil depletion were investigated. A total of 43 animals were divided randomly into 7 groups. Group I (control) was given a complete chow diet, groups II, III and IV received almost protein free (N-free) diet and groups V, VI and VII received a 20% gelatin containing diet for 35 days ad libitum. In addition, groups I, II and V were given physiologic saline, groups III and …

Prevalence And Antibiotic Susceptibility Of Thermophilic Campylobacter Species In Broiler Chickens, Murat Yildirim, Ersi̇n İstanbulluoğlu, Burcu Ayvali
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
The aim of the present study was to investigate the prevalence of thermophilic Campylobacter species in broiler chicken faecal samples and on their carcasses. The possible routes of carcass contamination were assessed from slaughterhouse to market. Furthermore, the study aimed to determine the antibiotic susceptibility of Campylobacter isolates from broilers. Thermophilic Campylobacter spp. was isolated from 393 (91.8%) of 428 samples examined. A total of 53 out of 57 rectal swab samples was positive for thermophilic Campylobacter spp. Thermophilic Campylobacter spp. were isolated from 93.6%, 92.9% and 91.3% of broiler carcass, faecal and caecal samples, respectively. No Campylobacter was isolated …

Examination Of Genetic And Morphologic Structure Of Sea-Bass (Dicentrarchus Labrax L., 1758) Populations In Turkish Coastal Waters, Deni̇z Ergüden, Cemal Turan
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
In this study genetic and morphologic structure of the sea-bass, Dicentrarchus labrax, in Turkish coastal waters were studied. Total 120 individuals were sampled in equal numbers from the Black, Marmara, Aegean and North-eastern Mediterranean Seas. In genetic analyses, four-enzyme systems (G3PDH*, ME*, MDH*, PGI*) were assayed, representing 9 loci (G3PDH-1*, G3PDH-2*, MDH-1*, MDH-2*, MDH-3*, ME*, PGI-1*, PGI-2*, PGI-3*), 2 of which were polymorphic (G3PDH-2*, PGI-3*). Fisher's exact test revealed that there were no genetic differences between populations using 9 loci. Nei's genetic distance was 0.0001 between the Black Sea and Mediterranean samples. Genetic identity was also found to be 0.9999 …
