Some Quality Characteristics Of Pheasant (Phasianus Colchicus) Eggs With Different Shell Colors, Kemal Kirikçi, Ayteki̇n Günlü, Mustafa Gari̇p

In this study, some external and internal quality characteristics of pheasant (Phasianus colchicus) eggs with white, blue, brown, or olive green shells were investigated. A total of 120 pheasant eggs including 9 white, 4 blue, 24 brown and 83 olive green eggs (collected in the same laying period and randomly) were used in this study. The values of egg weight, shape index, eggshell weight and shell membrane weight of the brown and the olive green eggs were found different from those of the blue and white color eggs (P < 0.05). Yolk and albumen weights of the white, blue, brown, and olive green eggs were found 9.03 and 16.28 g, 9.57 and 14.37 g, 10.72 and 17.96 g, 10.13 and 17.79 g, respectively (P < 0.05). The effect of eggshell colors on the yolk index, albumen index, shell thickness, membrane thickness, and Haugh Unit was found to be insignificant (P < 0.05). As a result of this study, the quality of brown and olive green eggs were better than blue and white eggs.

This study was performed to determine the thermal resistance of L. monocytogenes at different heat treatments in İnegöl meatballs. İnegöl meatballs were divided into three groups. In group I, meatballs were inoculated with 8.0x10^2, 1.9x10^3, 6.0x10^3 and 2.4x10^4 cfu/g L. monocytogenes and then they were cooked at an internal temperature of 85 °C for 4 min. Immunohistochemical Distribution Of Desmin And Vimentin In The Skin Of Zavot Cattle, Şahi̇n Aslan, Hakan Kocamiş, Mümtaz Nazli, Nurhayat Gülmez

The distribution patterns of desmin and vimentin were determined in Zavot cattle skin using standard immunohistochemical techniques. Skin samples were collected from the different regions of the bodies. Vimentin-immunoreactivity was observed in the cells of subepidermal region, in the myoepithelial cells surrounding sebaceous and sweat glands, in the fibroblast, smooth muscle, endothelial cells of vessels and some hair follicles. Desmin-immunoreactivity was dense in the smooth muscle of arrectores pilorum muscles and bulbus pilorum of the some hair follicles. Desmin and vimentin immunoreactivities were not different among the various regions of Zavot cattle skin.

Non-Linear Models For Growth Curves In Large White Turkeys, Turgay Şengül, Selahatti̇n Ki̇raz

The present work aimed to model the growth curves of male and female turkeys with respect to their live weight-age relationships and to determine a non-linear model explaining their growth curve better. For this purpose four different non-linear models were used to define growth curves of turkeys, namely Gompertz, Logistic, Morgan-Mercer-Flodin (MMF), and Richards. The coefficients of determination for these models were 0.9975, 0.9937, 0.9993, and 0.9966 for females and 0.9974, 0.9933, 0.9993, and 0.9969 for males, respectively. Considering model selection criteria, Gompertz, Logistic and Richards models seen to be suitable models for explaining Large White turkey growth.

The aim of the present study was to determine median lethal concentrations (LC 50) of unionised ammonia (NH_{3}) for the larvae and fingerlings of Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus L. 1758). The mean 48 h LC50 values were determined as 1.009 ± 0.02 mg/l for larvae and 7.40 ± 0.01 mg/l for the fingerlings. Larvae exposed to different concentrations of ammonia moved very rapidly, lost equilibrium in water and showed sideways swimming. In this study, the normal incudomalleal (IM) joint surface of dogs was studied by SEM. The animals under the Ketamine + Xylazine (5/2 mg/kg. iv.) anesthesia, were perfused with 2.5% glutaraldehyde solution in 0.1 M sodium potassium phosphate buffer pH 7.2 via left ventricle. Middle ear ossicles were processed with routine histological procedures for SEM and examined under a Philips 505 type SEM. The articular surfaces of malleus and incus showed similar configuration and micromorphology. Egg weight, shape index and hatching weight and interrelationship among these three traits have been studied in native Turkish geese with different coloured feathers (black, white, piebald and yellow). Means of the four feather colours for egg weights were 147, 150.49, 142.95, 150.88 g, for shape index 67.01, 66.19, 66.68, 67.12% and for hatching weight 94.99, 98.41, 92.95, 97.40 g, respectively. Egg weight and hatching weight showed significant differences according to feather colour (P < 0.05) but this difference has not been observed in shape index (P > 0.05). Egg weight was significantly correlated with hatching weight (72%) and also significant regression was found between egg weight and hatching weight (r^{2} = 0.51).

This study was designed to determine the seroprevalence of brucellosis and leptospirosis in aborted dairy cattle. For this purpose, serum samples were collected from 163 aborted dairy cattle that had no history of vaccination against either brucellosis or leptospirosis. The antibodies against B. abortus were detected in these serum samples as 68.1%, 65.6%, 58.9% and 55.2%, respectively by the Competitive Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (C-ELISA), Complement Fixation Test (CFT), Rosebengal Plate Test (RBPT) and Serum Agglutination Test (SAT). The biology of the tub gurnard, Chelidonichthys lucernus (Linnaeus, 1758), has been studied on data collected between November 1996 and November 1997 from the Sea of Marmara. Totally, 224 tub gurnards were sampled. The age, growth, length-weight relationship, condition factor, male to female ratio, first sexual maturity age, length and reproduction period were examined. The age composition of samples ranged between 1 and 6 years. Total length ranged between 12.3 and 41.5 cm, while weight varied from 15 to 617 g. Annular sea bream (Diplodus annularis L., 1758) is one of the most abundant species among demersal fishes in the Aegean Sea. The object of this study was to determine the selectivity parameters of 52-54-56 mm stretched mesh size monofilament gillnets used for catching the annular sea bream in the İzmir Bay in the Eastern Aegean Sea. Selectivity curves were determined using Sechin method, which estimates probability of fish retention as a function of morphometric features of the body between head and maximum girth of fish. Phenotypic Correlations Among Some Traits In Chinchilla Lanigera Produced In Turkey, Öznur Poyraz, Zehra Bozkurt, Esi̇n Ebru Onbaşilar

The aim of this study was to investigate the phenotypic correlations among some morphological and pelt traits in Chinchilla lanigera. Male chinchillas aged 9-12 months were used. The average body weight at pelting was 466.22 g, the body length was 23.66 cm, the head length was 8.76 cm, chest circumference was 17.65 cm and the pelt length was 32.39 cm. The phenotypic correlation coefficients between the body weight and the chest circumference, the ear length, the ear width and the tail length were 0.180, 0.294, 0.361 and 0.233, respectively (P < 0.01). The correlation coefficients between the body weight and pelt length and head length were found to be 0.160 and 0.150, respectively (P < 0.05). The correlation coefficients between the pelt length and body length, head length, ear length, fur hair lengths of back of neck, back and rump were found as 0.896, 0.615, 0.365, 0.212, 0.307 and 0.296, respectively (P < 0.01). In conclusion, performing selection using some morphological characteristics correlated highly with some pelt traits could contribute to improved fur quality for the production or breeding of chinchillas.

This study was carried out to compare the colony development patterns of native and commercially imported Bombus terrestris colonies, which were used in greenhouses for pollination in the Mediterranean coastal region. Total of 57 queens, 23 of which were collected from the field and 34 obtained from the commercial company, were used. 91% of the queens collected from the field and 82% of the queens obtained from the commercial company laid eggs. The aims of the study were to investigate the importance of maternal effects and to determine the most appropriate model of analyses for pre- and post-weaning daily gain of Turkish Merino lambs. Genetic parameters were estimated by REML procedure using DFREML program. Twelve different animal models were fitted by including or excluding maternal genetic effect, maternal permanent environmental effect, maternal temporary environmental effect and covariance between direct-maternal genetic effects. The objective of this research was to determine microbiological quality of the Mytilus galloprovincialis and Venus gallina harvested in the Marmara Sea (Gelibolu Region). The samples were examined for total aerobic mesophilic bacteria (TAMB), coliform group bacteria, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella spp., Vibrio cholerae, and Vibrio parahaemolyticus. The feeding habits and diet composition of the stream dwelling resident brown trout Salmo trutta in the upper streams of River Ceyhan and River Euphrates were investigated by examining the stomach contents of 611 specimens collected from May 2000 to April 2001. Different bony structures as scales, vertebrae, otoliths, opercles and subopercles of 156 red mullet (Mullus barbatus ponticus Essipov, 1927) sampled from the Black Sea were removed for age determination. Otoliths were read once by two experienced readers. However, due to the difficulty of interpretation of annuli on the otolith edge, the broken-burnt method was applied to the 61 otoliths. Broken-burnt otoliths were also read once by the same two experienced readers. Seven male Awassi sheep and 7 male Shami (Damascus) goats, one year old and fed with a diet having 2503 Kcal ME and 155 g crude protein kg^{-1}, were housed individually for 49 days to determine the feeding behaviour. In this study, the gastro-intestinal (GI) organs of 50 goats in Burdur region, Turkey, were investigated for the prevalence of GI nematodes and the seasonal activity of the parasites was examined. All the animals examined (100%) were found to be infected with GI nematodes. Twenty-two nematode species were identified and a total of 53,759 nematodes were collected from the infected goats. The number of parasites per goat ranged from 65 to 4811 (mean 1075.18), while the number of nematode species per animal ranged from 1 to 12 (mean 6.34). The present study describes clinical, virological, histopathological, immunohistochemical and electron microscopic findings of pox infection encountered in a quail flock. Lesions consisted of single or multiple nodules with a crust in variable size of gray to yellow or dark brown discoloration on the comb, eyelids, and the other poorly feathered areas of the body. Histopathological changes consisted of hyperplastic epithelium overlying, with ballooning degeneration of keratinocytes, many of which had eosinophilic intracytoplasmic inclusion bodies (Bollinger bodies), and heterophilic infiltrations admixed with mononuclear cells extending into dermis. In this study, the presence of Arcanobacterium spp., which causes a variety of purulent infections involving the skin, joints and visceral organs, was investigated in abscessed kidney samples of cattle. A total of 500 cattle were examined at postmortem and 100 samples with abscess were collected. Arcanobacterium pyogenes was isolated in 40 (40%) of the samples examined. DNA extracted from the isolates were amplified by Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) using specific primers derived from plo gene of A. pyogenes and all the isolates were determined to be positive by PCR. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of formic acid, molasses, and microbial inoculant (homofermentative lactic acid bacteria) as silage additives on silage quality and ruminal fermentation characteristics. Silages with or without formic acid (0.5%), molasses (5%), or microbial inoculant (10 g/t) were fed to ruminally cannulated, 1.5 year-old Kıvırcık x Morkaraman sheep. Silage treated with molasses had significantly greater DM and CP concentrations compared with other groups (P < 0.05). pH values did not significantly differ among treatments (P > 0.05). Lactic acid concentrations were significantly higher in silages treated with enzyme or molasses compared with others (P < 0.05). While acetic acid concentration was the highest in silage treated with acid, it was the lowest in silage treated with molasses (P < 0.05). Silage NH_{3}-N concentration was the highest in silage treated with molasses, but the lowest in silage treated with acid (P < 0.05). Post-feeding ruminal total organic acid concentrations were significantly greater in sheep fed silages with additive than the control (P < 0.05). While percentages of acetic acid were greater, percentages of butyric acids were less in the rumen fluid of sheep fed silage without additive compared with the rumen fluid of sheep fed silage treated with silage additives. However, percentages of propionic acid did not differ among treatments.

In this study, a total of 30 Escherichia coli isolates obtained from milk samples of dairy cows suffering from subclinical mastitis in Konya, Turkey were typed according to plasmids and protein patterns. Agarose gel electrophoresis and sodium doedecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) methods were used to identify plasmids and whole-cell protein profiles. Of these two methods, SDS-PAGE typing proved to be more discriminate for typing the isolates.

The possibilities of synchronizing lambing and increasing reproduction by using exogenous hormones in Karakaş ewes raised under rural farm conditions and growth characteristics of their lambs were investigated. 112 Karakaş ewes at 2-5 ages were randomly assigned into treatment (n = 45) and control (n = 67) groups during breeding season. The ewes in treatment group were placed with 60 mg Medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA) containing intravaginal passaries for 14 days and received 600 IU PMSG injections at passary withdrawal. This study was conducted to serotype isolates of Mannheimia haemolytica in the Aydın region of Turkey. A total of 200 lung samples showing pneumonia signs were obtained from slaughterhouses in the Aydın region. Twenty-four strains were isolated as Mannheimia haemolytica complex. Twenty-two strains were identified as Mannheimia haemolytica and 2 were as Pasteurella trehalosi for the first time in the region. The serotyping studies of strains isolated from pneumonic lung samples showed that Mannheimia haemolytica serotypes A1, A2, A6, A7, A8 and Pasteurella trehalosi serotype T4 were present in Aydın.

Two burial chambers dating back to 1000 BC have been brought to light in the Van-Yoncatepe necropolis in Eastern Anatolia. In these two chambers (M5 and M6), plenty of skeletal remains belonging to dogs buried together with humans were discovered. The finds were a dog skeleton lying in-situ in burial chamber M5 and a number of bones scattered in three layers in burial chamber M6. Humeral and femoral circumferences were used to estimate the body weight of these dogs, and the data obtained from these measurements enabled us to further our knowledge of the formats of Van-Yoncatepe dogs. A series of experiments were conducted to determine the effects of rainbow trout serum (RTS), taken from rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) that have never experienced infectious pancreatic necrosis disease, on infectious pancreatic necrosis virus (IPNV) in vitro and in vivo.
