The aim of this study was to assess the usefulness of raw grass pea seeds in pig feed, and the usefulness of supplementing mixtures that contain raw grass pea seeds with a probiotic and an enzymatic preparation. The objectives of this study were to determine the prevalence of Salmonella in a population of house sparrows, which are commonly found around poultry houses, and to characterize the obtained Salmonella isolates via serotyping, multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and antibiotic resistance analysis. Samples of visceral organs (gastrointestinal tract, liver, and heart) from 470 house sparrows were subjected to culture and the results show that 18 (3.8%) were positive for Salmonella. Of the 18 Salmonella isolates characterized, the most predominant serovars were Salmonella Typhimurium and S. Enteritidis (9 and 8 cases each, respectively), whereas only 1 serovar belonged to S. …

A crossbred Jersey cow had been suffering from severe pain for 3 days due to a corneal foreign body. Tranquilization using intravenous triflupromazine (20 mg) followed by Peterson nerve block with 2% lidocaine hydrochloride (13 mL) facilitated examination of the eye and removal of a 12-mm-long (7 mm penetrated plus 5 mm protruding out) dry plant awn from the cornea. Primary Vaginal Fibroleiomyosarcoma In A 4-Year-Old Holstein-Friesian Cow, Hamdi̇ Avci, Güneş Seri̇n, Ahmet Aydoğan, Serap Bi̇ri̇nci̇oğlu

A case of fibroleiomyosarcoma of the vagina in a 4-year-old Holstein-Friesian cow is described. The tumour was 6.5 × 5 × 4.2 cm in size, weighed 87.73 g, and had a solid appearance. Histologically, the tumour was composed of smooth muscle and fibrous tissue components with spindle-shaped cells with eosinophilic fibrillary cytoplasm. Immunohistochemically, the tumour cells reacted with antibodies to \alpha-SMA, desmin, and vimentin but not with antibodies to CD34, CD68, and S-100 protein. Both histologically and immunohistochemically it showed the features of a fibroleiomyosarcoma.

Biologic Parameters Of Polar Fox (Alopex Lagopus L.) Semen During The Breeding Season, Karolina Stasiak, Bogdan Janicki, Bogumila Kupcewicz

The aim of this work was to evaluate the biologic properties of polar fox (Alopex lagopus L.) semen collected during the reproductive season. In 126 ejaculates manually collected from 18 foxes at 10- to 12-day intervals, semen parameters (such as the sperm concentration, volume, pH, sperm morphology, and activity of acid and alkaline phosphatase) were determined. The seminal plasma acid and alkaline phosphatase activity correlated positively with the sperm concentration (r = 0.5676; r = 0.6302; P < 0.01) and negatively with the ejaculate volume (r = -0.3456; r = -0.2783, P < 0.01). A significant correlation also existed between acid and alkaline phosphatase activity (r = 0.7043, P < 0.01).

The aim of the present study was to examine differences in proportions of the larynx between young and adult domestic pigs. Larynges (17 piglets and 14 adults) were obtained from a slaughterhouse where pigs were routinely slaughtered. Anatomical preparation, observation, and description, as well as measurements performed using MULTISCAN image analysis, were used. In the statistical analysis, apart from the arithmetic mean (x) and the standard deviation (SD), Student's t test was used with the statistical significance at \alpha = 0.05. Oxidative stress plays an important role in the etiology and/or progression of a number of diseases and aging. In this cross-sectional study, some oxidative stress biomarkers (malondialdehyde [MDA] as a lipid peroxidation biomarker, ferric reducing/antioxidant power [FRAP], and total nonprotein SH groups) in plasma samples of Shaal ewes of different age groups were assessed. For all 3 measured parameters, the youngest age group (10-30 months old) had the lowest amounts. Although FRAP levels increased slightly and age dependently, nonprotein SH group content showed a decreasing trend after a peak in the 31-50 months group. Serological evidence of EDS'76 virus in free-range chickens at the various chicken markets (Kasuwan kaji, New market, Gada biyu, and Kugiya) located in Jos and its environs was investigated through antibody detection. The serum samples randomly collected from chickens were assayed for antibodies against EDS'76 virus by haemagglutination-inhibition (HI) test. It was observed that 292 (15.2%) of the 1920 sera tested were positive for EDS'76 antibodies with HI titres ranging between log22 and log2128 and geometric mean titre (GMT) between 4.9 and 13.1. The present study aimed to determine P-glycoprotein expression according to TVT cell morphology in 42 dogs with confirmed TVT, classified into lymphocytoid, plasmocytoid, and mixed. The chemotherapy efficiency was investigated along with its relation to P-glycoprotein expression in tumoral cells, evaluated by immunocytochemistry, considering positive tumors more than 10% stained. Among the samples collected, 50.00% possessed plasmocytoid morphology, 18.63% lymphocytoid, and 31.37% mixed. The plasmocytoid presented greater immunoreactivity to the anti-P-glycoprotein antibody in relation to the lymphocytoid. It was observed that the plasmocytoid was less sensitive to chemotherapy. The present report describes a giant cell type of malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH), diagnosed in soft parts of the right abdominal mammary region, in an 11-year old, 8 kg, nulliparous female Ankara (Angora) cat diagnosed in soft parts of the right abdominal mammary region. The tumor, surgically excised from the abdominal region, had a flexible consistency with ulcerated overlying skin. Objective—To determine if hybrid adeno-associated virus serotype 2/5 (AAV5) vector can effectively deliver foreign genes into the equine cornea without causing adverse side effects. The aims of this study were to: (i) evaluate efficacy of AAV5 to deliver therapeutic genes into equine corneal fibroblasts (ECFs) using enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP) marker gene and (ii) establish the safety of AAV5 vector for equine corneal gene therapy.

BACKGROUND: Selection for exercise-adapted phenotypes in the Thoroughbred racehorse has provided a valuable model system to understand molecular responses to exercise in skeletal muscle. Exercise stimulates immediate early molecular responses as well as delayed responses during recovery, resulting in a return to homeostasis and enabling long term adaptation. Probiotic supplementation is now being focused as an alternative method to control fish diseases worldwide. This study investigates the in vitro efficacy of a human-derived probiotic, Lactobacillus rhamnosus. The first results of the screening for antimicrobial activity using agar spot test and disc diffusion showed that L. rhamnosus has a broad range against twelve isolates (n=12) of Gram-positive and Gram-negative pathogenic bacteria in fish and frogs : Streptococcus iniae (n=4), Streptococcus agalactiae (n=3), Aeromonas hydrophila (n=3), Chryseobacterium indologenes (n=1) and Edwardsiella tarda (n=1). To study the acute and subacute pulmonary effects of diesel exhaust particles (DEPs), mice were intratracheally instilled with 25, 50 or 100 μg of DEPs for dose response experiments. Histological alterations were determined at 3 days post-exposure. 50 or 100 μg of DEPs produced mild to moderate pulmonary inflammation and tissue injury characterized by infiltration of neutrophils and active alveolar macrophages (AMs), focal alveolitis and particle-laden AMs accumulation. Ultrastructural studies of treated animals showed the dissociation of basement membranes and erosion of type I alveolar epithelial cells. Effects of permethrin at a prophylactic dose for ectoparasite infection on cholinesterase (ChE) activity was evaluated. Eight healthy dogs were exposed to a spot-on formulation of permethrin on day 0. The results of serum ChE activity in all of the dogs which was measured at 24 h after exposure to permethrin significantly decreased when compared to those before exposure. However, the serum ChE activity in all the dogs which was measured at 36 and 96 h after exposure to permethrin showed no significant difference as compared to those before exposure. Pigs challenged with hypoglycosylated variants of Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome Virus (PRRSV) major surface protein GP5 exhibited increased production of PRRSV-neutralizing antibodies relative to the levels of neutralizing antibodies produced by pigs immunized with wild type (wt) or glycosylated GP5. This invention provides for methods of obtaining improved immune responses in pigs to PRRSV, compositions useful for obtaining the improved immune responses as well as isolated polynucleotides that encode hypoglycosylated variants of PRRSV major surface protein GP5.

We recently reported a direct, inverse, significant linear correlation of Env divergence from our live-attenuated vaccine strain (EIAVD9) and protection from disease. This marked effect of Env variation or viral evolution on vaccine efficacy begged the current questions: what is the relationship of Env variation and viral evolution to vaccine efficacy and does the evolution of virus in inapparent carriers differ from the evolution of attenuated vaccine viruses?
