This study compared the efficacy of enrofloxacin, given immediately or 6 hrs after infection against Escherichia coli or Pasteurella multocida. In the first experiment, thirty, 12-week-old male layer chickens were divided into 3 groups of 10 each. Chickens in group 1, 2 and 3 were infected with E. coli serotype O78 by left thoracic air sac injection. Group 1 was given enrofloxacin (10 mg/kg), dissolved in drinking water immediately receiving E. coli. Group 2 was given enrofloxacin 6 hrs after receiving E. coli. Prevalence Of The Cellular And Molecular Antimicrobial Resistance Against E. Coli Isolated From Thai Broilers, Sarawoot Mooljuntee, Piyarat Chansiripornchai, Niwat Chansiripornchai

The antimicrobial resistant characteristics both of the cellular and molecular levels of Escherichia coli in broilers were performed by disk diffusion test and polymerase chain reaction technique. Specific primers for the aadA, aac(3)-IV, cmlA, cat1, tetA, sul1, SHV, CITM, ereA and dhfrV gene were used to detect resistance to gentamicin, chloramphenicol, tetracycline, cephalothin, ampicillin, erythromycin, sulfonamide+trimetroprim. The 30 samples of E. coli were found to be 100% antimicrobial disk resistant to tetracycline, ampicillin and erythromycin and revealed a 90%, 93.3% and 73.3% resistant gene to tetA, CITM and ereA, respectively. The characteristic of erythrocytes, leukocytes and thrombocytes of a captive Irrawaddy river dolphin (Orcaella brevirostris) was described using blood sample collected from caudal vein. By morphological and ultrastructural studies, erythrocytes showed similar size as in humans and contained cytoplasmic electron dense hemoglobin without nucleus. Multilobulated granulocytes composed of cytoplasmic round-to-elongated granulecontaining neutrophils and round-to-oval shaped granule-bearing eosinophils while basophil was very scanty. Monocytes displayed azulophilic granules and vacuolated cytoplasm with pseudopodia. Lymphocytes showed equal amounts of heterochromatin and euchromatin with numerous mitochondria in their cytoplasm. Isolation Of Actinobacillus Pleuropneumoniae Serotype 15-Like Strain From A Porcine Tonsil In Thailand: A Case Report, Walaiporn Tonpitak

An isolate of Actinobacillus (A.) pleuropneumoniae from porcine tonsil samples was identified as serotype 15-like strain, which was previously isolated in Australia, North America and Japan. It was characterized by biochemical testing performed for Actinobacillus sp. and confirmed as A. pleuropneumoniae by PCR and nucleotide sequencing of 16s rDNA. The isolate contains apxIBD, apxIICA, apxIIIBD, apxIIICA and apxIVA gene. The result of PCR-REA of apxIVA method was identical as A. pleuropneumoniae serotype 15 strain HS143 reference strain. Therefore this isolate is proposed as A. pleuropneumoniae serotype 15- like strain and the first report of A. pleuropneumoniae serotype 15-like strain in …

Pemoline is a central nervous system stimulant that has been used to treat attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder and narcolepsy in humans; its identification in horses could be considered evidence of attempts to influence performance. Two recent pemoline 'positives' in English racehorses led us to review the chemical relationships between tetramisole, levamisole, aminorex and pemoline. Pemoline is a simple oxidation product of aminorex, which has been shown in the United States and elsewhere to be an equine metabolite of levamisole. Based on the clear structural relationships between aminorex and pemoline, we conclude that levamisole can metabolise to pemoline in horses and that …

The porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) is an economically important pathogen of swine and is known to cause abortion and infertility in pregnant sows and respiratory distress in piglets. PRRSV contains a major glycoprotein (GP5) and three minor glycoproteins (GP2a, GP3, and GP4) on the virion envelope, all of which are required for infectious virus production. To study their interactions amongst each other and with a cellular receptor for PRRSV, CD163, I cloned each of the viral glycoproteins and CD163 in various expression vectors. Domestic dogs exhibit an extraordinary degree of morphological diversity. Such breed-to-breed variability applies equally to the canine skull, however little is known about whether this translates to systematic differences in cerebral organization. By looking at the paramedian sagittal magnetic resonance image slice of canine brains across a range of animals with different skull shapes (N = 13), we found that the relative reduction in skull length compared to width (measured by Cephalic Index) was significantly correlated to a progressive ventral pitching of the primary longitudinal brain axis (r = 0.83), as well as with a ventral shift in the position …

Bovine tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious and communicable granulomatous disease caused by the acidfast bacilli bacteria of Mycobacterium bovis (M. bovis). It is commonly a chronic, debilitating disease, but occasionally may assume an acute, rapidly progressive course. M. bovisis a widespread zoonosis that is global in magnitude and affects nearly all species of vertebrates (cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, bison, buffalo, and camelids.) Bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) is a member of the genus Pestivirus, Family Flaviviridae. The virus can infect many species of animals of the order Artiodactyla. The BVDV genome encodes an auto protease, Npro, that degrades interferon regulatory factor-3 (IRF-3) reducing type I interferon (IFN-I) production from host cells. Bovine respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV) is a member of the genus Pneumovirus, Family Paramyxoviridae. Concurrent infection with BVDV and BRSV causes more severe respiratory and enteric disease than infection with either virus alone. The objective of the present study was to determine the effects of using supernatant (seminal plasma:extender, 50:50 v/v) as post-thawing solution and semen extender on sow fertility. The present study was performed to investigate the in vivo fertility of frozen-thawed (FT) boar semen after intra-uterine (IUI) and deep intra-uterine insemination (DIUI) in spontaneously-ovulating sows. A total of 48 weaned sows were included. The sows were divided into three groups, i.e. natural mating (NM) (n=30), IUI (n=9) and DIUI (n=9). In the IUI and DIUI groups, the sows were inseminated twice, at 24 and 36 h after the detection of oestrous by IUI with 2x109 spermatozoa/dose or DIUI with 1x109 spermatozoa/dose. Lateral Patellar Luxation In Three Pomeranian Dogs: A Case Report, Chalika Wangdee, Pinrath Torwattanachai
The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
Three Pomeranians with bilateral lateral patellar luxation (LPL) were present at the Small Animal Teaching Hospital, Faculty of Veterinary Science, Chulalongkorn University. Trochlear block recession was performed on all the dogs. The additional procedures including lateral retinacular desmotomy, tibial derotation, imbrication of medial retinaculum, and/or proximal tube realignment. Medial transposition of the tibial tuberosity was additionally done in one dog. Recurrent right LPL was found and corrected in one leg of the second dog. Following at least 3 months, all three dogs walked, jumped, and put weight normally on the operated legs after the operation.

Myxomatous degenerative mitral valve disease (MVD) is the most common cardiac disease in dogs.Pathological changes of MVD include thickened redundant leaflets causing improper coaptation of leaflets, resultingin mitral valve regurgitation. The etiology of this disease is currently unknown. Thus, no drugs or treatments areavailable to slow down the disease progression. This article was written to summarize an update of canine MVD concerning clinical approach, etiology, and treatment.

Comparison of analgesic efficacy of 3 non-steroidal analgesic drugs (carprofen, vedaprofen and tepoxalin) were performed in 40 dogs after ovariohysterectomy. Oral administration of placebo (sugar pill), carprofen (4.4 mg/kg/day), vedaprofen (0.5 mg/kg/day), or tepoxalin (20 mg/kg/day) for 3 days were performed in dogs recovering from ovariohysterectomy. Numerical pain scores (descriptive and composite pain scores) were measured in blinded fashion by three investigators at 0, 12, 24, 36, 48 and 60 hrs following the recovery. The average descriptive and composite pain scores of dogs treated with carprofen or tepoxalin were significantly lower than that of the control group (p<0.05), however, no significance difference was found between the vedaprofen-treated and control groups (p>0.05). Canine heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis) infection in stray dogs was studied by using parasitological (fresh blood smear, thin blood smear, thick blood smear, and modified Knott’s test) and serological methods. Blood samples were collected from stray dogs in Bangkok metropolitan area during 2006 and 2008. There were 10% (50/500) of stray dogs infected with D. immitis, which was indicated by using parasitological methods. Microfilaria levels were evaluated from 36 infected dogs and the range of microfilarial levels were between 17 and 78,417 microfilariae per milliliter of blood. Water temperature was set up at 2 levels; high (Ht, 29.5±0.5oC) and low temperature (Lt, 19.5±0.5oC). Experimental catfish body weight and total length were 12.07±1.41 g and 11.57±0.62 cm respectively. Catfish were divided into 4 groups: high temperature with 0.1% sodium chloride (NaCl) (HtWs), high temperature without 0.1% NaCl (HtW/s), low temperature with 0.1% NaCl (LtWs), and low temperature without 0.1% NaCl (LtW/s). The objectives of the present study were to evaluate the damage of DNA of the frozen-thawed (FT) boar spermatozoa and to investigate the effect of various concentrations of L-cysteine supplementation on the sperm DNA damage. A total of 104 cryopreserved semen samples from twenty-six ejaculates of 16 proven boars were analyzed. Of these samples, each semen sample contained a different concentration of L-cysteine i.e., 0 (n=41), 5 (n=41), 10 (n=11) and 15 (n=11) mM. The cows were treated with recombinant bovine somatotropin (rbST) in early, mid and late lactation with three consecutive injections of rbST 500 mg of rbST (POSILAC) in every 14 days. During the study, ambient temperature at the hottest period daily (1400 hr) in the MFC barn was significantly lower, while relative humidity was higher than that of the NS barn. In order to isolate local strain of spore-forming bacteria having probiotic properties, 164 isolates of the sporeforming bacteria were isolated from 152 samples including duodenum, jejunum, ileum and cecum collected from 38 local backyard chickens raised in the northern part of Thailand. These isolates were preliminarily screened for antibiotic susceptibility and antimicrobial acitivity. Only antibiotic-susceptible isolates with antimicrobial activity were further characterized for the ability to resist certain harsh environments. Identification of the potential isolates was carried out by morphological and biochemical studies, followed by analysis of 16S rDNA sequence. The aim of this report is to describe the clinical, radiographic and pathological appearances of a persistent gastroesophageal intussusception in associated with idiopathic egaesophagus in an adult dog. A 6-years old, male Golden Retriever was referred for evaluation of chronic regurgitation and vomiting. Radiographic diagnosis of persistent gastroesophageal intussusception (GEI) with megaesophagus was made. Survey and contrast radiography evidenced a distension of the esophageal medial and caudal portions due to a dense soft-tissue mass and the barium cloud not pass to abdominal portion, where outlined the striations of muscle of the distal esophagus around the mass.Necropsy findings revealed a completed …

West Nile virus, first identified within the United States in 1999, has since spread across the continental states and infected birds, humans and domestic animals, resulting in numerous deaths. Previous studies in mice identified the Oas1b gene, a member of the OAS/RNASEL innate immune system, as a determining factor for resistance to West Nile virus (WNV) infection. A recent case-control association study described mutations of human OAS1 associated with clinical susceptibility to WNV infection. The matrix protein (M1) of influenza A virus is generally viewed as a key orchestrator in the release of influenza virions from the plasma membrane during infection. In contrast to this model, recent studies have indicated that influenza virus requires expression of the envelope proteins for budding of intracellular M1 into virus particles. Here we explored the mechanisms that control M1 budding. Similarly to previous studies, we found that M1 by itself fails to form virus-like-particles (VLPs).
