A Comparative Study Of Some Blood Factors In Male And Female Caspian Kutum (Rutilus Frisii Kutum) Broodstock From The Southern Basin Of The Caspian Sea, Farid Firouzbakhsh, Zeynab Abedi, Hossain Rahmani, Mohammad K. Khalesi

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

In this study, some serum factors in male and female Caspian kutum (Rutilus frisii kutum) broodstocks were investigated. The estimated values were compared between male and female fish of various age groups. A total of 80 mature fish (40 males and 40 females) were randomly caught from the Shirood and Tajen rivers (southern Caspian Sea) during spawning season. Blood samples were then taken from the caudal peduncles and the serum biochemical parameters were measured according to common laboratory methods. Cholesterol levels showed significant differences (P < 0.05) between male and female broodstocks from the Tajen River, as well as between male and female kutum of the Tajen and Shirood rivers. Comparison of the estimated serum factors with the fish ages revealed no significant changes (P > 0.05). A high correlation was found between total protein and weight in fish from both …

The present study investigated the fattening performance and carcass traits of lambs obtained by the crossing of the Hasak and Hasmer sheep types, developed at the Bahri Dağdaş International Agricultural Research Institute, with publicly owned Akkaraman sheep. Of each of these groups, 7 male and 7 female lambs of approximately 75 days of age were raised under an intensive feedlot system. The fattening period lasted 70 days, and, at the end of this period, 5 lambs were slaughtered from each group with the aim of determining carcass traits. High Clinical Disturbance And Mortality In Pigeon Flocks Caused By Hadjelia Truncata Infection In Sistan, Iran, Reza Nabavi, Javad Khedri, Mehdi Jahantigh

A large number of birds in 3 pigeon flocks (containing 637 individuals) were severely affected by Hadjelia truncata. This was observed in April 2011 in Sistan District in Iran. In the affected birds, progressive weight loss, weakness, and death were observed. In the necropsy of 8 cases the gizzards were larger and softer than normal and in all of them distortion was detected. Stool examination by the Clayton Lane method revealed 72% infection among domestic pigeons. The objective of this study was to investigate the presence of mycoplasmas in the respiratory system of sheep and goat populations managed under extensive production systems. Specific culture and polymerase chain reaction techniques were performed on a total of 88 lung tissue samples and 142 nasal swabs obtained from multiple herds in Bosnia and Herzegovina. A total of 29 samples (12.6%) were found to be positive for mycoplasmas. A male Beagle dog was referred with a perineal wound after perineal herniorrhaphy. Open wound management was performed, using wet-to-dry contact dressing with daily debridement and lavage for 7 days. The wound was reconstructed with an island gracilis myocutaneous flap (GMCF). The wound healed without any complications, while limb and pelvic function were uncompromised. Based on the outcome of the present case, it is proposed that transposition of the GMCF can be an effective alternative for reconstruction of soft tissue defects in the perineal area.

Checklist Of Small Ruminant Gastrointestinal Nematodes And Their Geographical Distribution In Turkey, Feri̇de Sevi̇mli̇

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

This review presents a search of the literature about gastrointestinal nematodosis of small ruminants. The search was performed on 58 articles published on necropsied sheep and goats between 1937 and 2011 in Turkey. This review identified 43 nematode species belonging to sheep and goats, assessed the prevalence of infection in different regions of Turkey, and evaluated the effect of age, sex, race, nutrition, and seasonal condition. This is the first review that specifically evaluated the gastrointestinal nematodes of small ruminants for 74 annual periods in Turkey.

Theileria equi, a haemoprotozoan of equids, is responsible for endemic infection/latency in tropical/subtropical parts of the world. The present study investigated the immunokinetics of T. equi infection in experimental animals and the diagnostic applicability of single dilution ELISA vis-à-vis conventional serial dilution ELISA. The aim of this study was to describe the morphology and results of treatment of an iguana’s oral abscess. A case of unilateral oral abscesses with tooth loss in a male green iguana (Iguana iguana) was presented. Gingival necrosis and a pocket of caseous yellow-gray pus were visible in the soft tissues. Some cranial teeth were found loose within the necrotic tissue. Radiographic study showed decreased bone density. Treatment of the abscess involved opening up the pus-filled abscess and manually cleaning it out. The bacteriology confirmed a culture of Pseudomonas aeruginosa sensitive to enrofloxacin, gentamicin, and chloramphenicol.

Among the soil-transmitted helminths (STH), hookworms are a worldwide problem in both humans and animals. They cause non-specific gastrointestinal symptoms, and in young children and animals, they can cause stunting, malnutrition and anemia. Canine hookworms have significant zoonotic potential as a cause of cutaneous larvae migrans and eosinophilic enteritis in humans. Bovine herpes virus 1 (BHV-1) is a significant viral pathogen in cattle that induces a myriad of clinical symptoms. These symptoms include: conjunctivitis, upper respiratory tract infections, genital disorders, and abortions. BHV-1 infection can also lead to transient immune-suppression, which predisposes cattle to secondary bacterial infection leading to life-threatening pneumonia referred to as bovine respiratory disease (BRD). Following acute infection, BHV-1 establishes latency in sensory neurons within trigeminal ganglia. Reactivation of the virus can occur periodically, resulting in virus transmission. Abdominal massage (AM) is a common method for semen collection in avian species. There are few data concerning electro-ejaculation (EE) in this species. This experiment was carried out to study the effect of semen collection techniques (AM and EE) on semen quality and sperm motility parameters in three Siamese fighting cocks (Gallus gallus). EE was done under general anesthesia by isoflurane vaporizer. In experiment 1, either low voltage (5- 10 volts) or high voltage (5-30 volts) protocols for EE stimulation was applied. In Thailand, some breeders in pig farms have had osteoarthritis lesions for which M. hyosynoviae might be one of the causative agents. Therefore, the semi-nested polymerase chain reaction assay was developed for detection of Mycoplasma hyosynoviae in organs of pigs in Thailand using three oligonucleotide primers specific to 16S rRNA gene of M. hyosynoviae. The detection limit of purified DNA was 10 femtogram per reaction and of the simulated lung sample was 103 CFU per gram of sample. Effects Of Semen Extender On Motility And Movement Patterns Of Frozen-Thawed Eld’S Deer (Cervus Eldii) Spermatozoa, Sukumal Rittem, Daraka Thongthainun, Wanlaya Tipkantha, Boripat Siriaroonrat, Nikorn Thongtip

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Two semen samples of Siamese Eld,s deer (Cervus eldii siamensis: SED) and seven semen samples of Thamin Eld,s deer (Cervus eldii thamin: TED) were collected by using electroejaculation. Each ejaculate was diluted and cryopreserved with 2 extenders; 1) TRIS; and 2) modified BF5F supplemented with 5% final glycerol concentration. The movement patterns of frozen-thawed spermatozoa were assessed using computer-assisted sperm analysis (CASA). In TED, the results revealed a significantly higher (p< 0.05) percentage of total motility (%TM), percentage of progressive motility (%PM), track speed (VCL) and lateral amplitude (ALH) in TRIS extender. The results also revealed a significantly low (p< 0.05) progressive velocity (VSL), straightness (STR) and linearity (LIN) in TRIS extender. However, for path velocity (VAP) and beat frequency (BCF), there were no differences between both extenders. In SED, sperm motility and sperm movement parameters did not show differences between TRIS and modified BF5F extenders. Findings from this study will aid in Eld’s deer semen banking and artificial insemination success in the future.

Glutaredoxin belongs to the oxidoreductase family with cytosolic glutaredoxin 1 (Grx1) and mitochondrial gluraredoxin 2 (Grx2) isoforms. Of the two isozymes, the function of Grx2 is not well understood. This paper studied the effect of Grx2 deletion on cellular function using primary lens epithelial cell cultures isolated from Grx2 gene knockout (KO) and wild type (WT) mice. We found that both cell types showed similar growth patterns and morphology, and comparable mitochondrial glutathione pool and complex I activity. Feline coronavirus (FCoV) infection manifests a wide magnitude of clinical symptoms from nonpathogenic mild enteric infection to pathogenic fatal feline infectious peritonitis (FIP). Based on the in vitro properties and antigenic relationship to canine coronavirus (CCoV), FCoVs are classified into type I and II with different continent preference. Our study investigated proteins in bovine spermatozoa using 2-DE and LC MS/MS and found a markedly different expression in mature bovine proacrosin binding protein (sp32), which is the focus of the present study. Spermatozoa extract from nine fertile Brahman bulls was separated using 2-DE followed by Coomassie brilliant blue staining. From over 600 protein spots, a particular protein spot with two different patterns was detected at 32 kDa. The purpose of this study was to report the incidence of articular cartilage injury of the stifle joint in 323 dogs found during surgery at orthopedic clinics in Chiang Mai, Thailand, from October 2006 to July 2012. A total of 44 dogs (13.6%) had cartilage lesions. Surgical operations in this study included the corrections of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) rupture (14.2%), distal femur fracture (15.2%), and patellar luxation (66.6%), and the removal of the IM pin from the tibia (4%). Complement system is a powerful host defense mechanism that contributes to both innate and acquired immunities. C3 is the central component of all activation pathways and plays a crucial role in the early immune response. The aim of this present study was to look into ontogeny and expression of C3 in walking catfish Clarias macrocephalus by using molecular techniques. Feline lower urinary tract diseases (FLUTD) is a diagnostic term for cats with hematuria, dysuria, pollakiuria, and partial or complete urethral obstruction. The aim of the present study was to identify risk factors for cats with LUTD. Cats with LUTD were evaluated by history, physical examination, urinalysis, radiography, and contrast radiography. Clinically normal cats consisted of vaccinated cats without clinical signs of LUTD admitted to the same veterinary hospital. The present study aimed to develop a quantitative method for the detection of chicken infectious anemia virus (CIAV). A real time polymerase chain reaction (real-time PCR) was developed to determine CIAV. The developed real-time PCR was a rapid and reliable quantitative technique for CIAV DNA compared with the conventional PCR. The appropriate cut-off was at the 40th cycle. Results indicated that the CT value of 39.62 was shown at the 10-9 dilution or 0.454 fg/μl or 3.86 x 103 DNA copies. This data suggests that the limit of detection for real-time PCR is 0.454fg/μl. Veterinary practitioners can be confronted with limb fractures in all types of horses. Immediate evaluation of the horse’s vital parameters, diagnosis, medication and stabilization of the fractured limb with splint bandages or fiberglass cast are of uppermost importance for a possible therapy. Adequate professional transportation of the horse with a fracture to a specialized referral center for diagnosis and therapy is crucial for a positive treatment strategy. This summary article describes in field emergency management of the equine patient with a fracture.

This study aimed to investigate gene expression patterns throughout preimplantation embryos and their comparative expression in morphological quality blastocysts using real-time RT-PCR. Bovine oocytes underwent maturation process, fertilized and were cultured in vitro. Degree of fragmentation and differentiation were the criteria to categorize day-7 blastocysts as of good and poor quality. All of the embryos from each developmental stage were used to quantify transcript abundance. It was found that E-cadherin was highly expressed in immature and mature oocytes, then it decreased at 2- to 16-cell stages, and later increased in morula and blastocyst stages.
