Some of the pharmacological properties of spirulina (Spirulina platensis) may be linked to its antioxidant potential, which mitigates oxidative stresses. In this study we examined whether spirulina mitigated arsenic-induced toxicity in the Black Bengal goat (Capra hircus). Nonpregnant female goats of approximately 12 months old were used in noninduced, nontreated control (T_1); arsenic-induced, nontreated (T_2); and arsenic-induced, spirulina-treated (T_3) groups. Groups T_2 and T_3 were given sodium arsenite orally (5 mg/kg) daily for 15 weeks. Cardiac tumors account for a small proportion of all canine tumors, but hemangiosarcoma represents the most frequent cardiac tumor in many species. Hemangiosarcoma occur intrapericardially with pericardial effusion. In this case report, a retrospective study was conducted on 9 cases of canine hemangiosarcoma. In all the dogs the presence of a pericardial exudate was noted and in 5 cases it was the only lesion detected during the examination. Fish usually have a simple body shape and many morphological characters can be easily obtained by 2-dimensional image analysis. Measuring errors are often analyzed using data from several researchers or repeated measurements, but the testing of accuracy and repeatability based on different methods has rarely been examined. This study has documented the intermediate branch of the dorsal rami of the spinal nerves in the lumbar region of 4 adult wild pigs. The lumbar spinal nerves at the L1-L4 levels left the vertebral canal through the intervertebral foramen. Upon the dissection of the 32 dorsal rami at these levels, 24 were displayed to construct 3 discrete branches while the remaining 8 were observed to form 2 typical branches. In the present study, an 84-bp insertion/deletion polymorphism of the sterol regulatory element-binding protein 1 (SREBP1) gene was investigated. The analysis included 6 Polish cattle herds consisting of beef (Limousin, Angus, Charolais), dairy (Holstein-Friesian, Jersey) and dual-purpose (Montbeliard) breeds. The polymorphism was found only in Limousin and Montbeliard animals, in which both the short (S)- and long (L)-type alleles occurred. The genotype distribution in Montbeliard cattle was as follows: 0.038, 0.406, and 0.556 for SS, LS, and LL, respectively. Management Of Severe Penile Swelling Associated With Urethropexy In An English Bulldog, Stefania Rabidi, Lysimachos Papazoglou, Paraskevi Tsobanidou, Wala Haddadin

A 10-month-old, unilateral cryptorchid, male English bulldog underwent urethropexy for the treatment of urethral prolapse. Six hours after surgery the dog developed dysuria, haematuria, discomfort, severe penile oedema, inflammation, and inability to extrude the penis from the prepuce. Urethral patency was restored by placing an indwelling catheter into the urethral lumen. Penile swelling was managed with cold and warm compresses for 2 days, and antibiotics, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and opioids for 4 days. Complete resolution of the swelling was evident by 3 days after surgery. One year after surgery the dog was reported to be in good health.

A 7-year-old crossbreed mare presented with mild to moderate colic and a 2-day history of anuria. Clinicopathological findings revealed leukocytosis with mild neutrophilia and lymphocytosis. Urinalysis showed increased leukocytes, epithelial cells, and protein. Biochemical analysis revealed mild azotemia and hypoglycemia. Ultrasonographically, the urethra was completely blocked by echoic material. The wall of the urethra was hyperechoic and easy to distinguish from the urethralis muscle surrounding it. The urinary bladder was distended, with a rough, thick wall (9 mm). To investigate the involvement of apoptosis in the pathogenesis of T3-induced pulmonary hypertension in broiler chickens, caspase-1, -2, and -3 gene expressions were evaluated by semiquantitative RT-PCR in the lungs and left and right heart ventricles. The aim of this study was to examine the influence of trivalent chromium ions (Cr^{3+}) supplementation on antioxidant status and immune defense of rats. During the 30 days of the experiment, the male rats (n = 10 per group) were supplemented with CrCl_3, dissolved in distilled drinking water in doses of 0, 70, or 140 µg Cr^{3+}/dm^3. Risk Factors For Postpartum Anestrus In Crossbred Cows In Bangladesh, Md Mostofa Kamal, Md Musharraf Uddin Bhuiyan, Nasreen Parveen, Harry W. Momont, Mohammed Shamsuddin

Ultrasonography and a structured questionnaire were used in a cross-sectional study to gather data on the prevalence and risk factors for anestrus in crossbred cows at =>60 days postpartum in 273 smallholder farms. The prevalence of anestrus was 18%. The odds ratio (OR) for true anestrus was 17.52 and 2.81 times higher (P < 0.05) in cows with poor (=3.5) body condition score (BCS), respectively, compared to those with optimal BCS (2.5-3.5), 2.82 times higher in suckled than in nonsuckled cows (P = 0.03), and 2.53 times higher in cows that calved during the cold season than in those that calved during the hot season (P = 0.03). The OR for anestrus was 1.62 times higher (P = 0.017) in cows managed by an employee than in those managed by the farmers themselves (P = 0.001), and 2.66 times higher (P = 0.003) in small farms (=11 cows). The OR was 0.71 to 0.46 times lower in farms having a guaranteed market to sell milk than those with an uncertain traditional milk market (P < 0.05). Maintaining optimal BCS of cows, farmers' training on management of cattle reproduction, and development of a market linkage to sell milk would improve the number of cows for breeding by 60 days postpartum.

The aim of this study was to determine the possibility of yielding more transferable embryos from cows superovulated with/without exogenous progesterone (ear implant and intravaginal device). Two experiments were conducted in Holstein Friesian cows to evaluate the effect of exogenous progesterone on the yield of corpus luteum (CL), total embryo and ova, and transferable embryos before superovulation. The aim of this study was to determine the fatty acid profile in 4 types of fat deposits in Polish Holstein-Friesian (PHF) and Limousine × Polish Holstein-Friesian (LM × PHF) bulls. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of supplementing diets fed to ewes (in late pregnancy and during lactation or only during lactation) with Saccharomyces cerevisiae dried brewer’s yeast on the yield and chemical composition of milk and on selected parameters of humoral and cellular immunity. The investigated indicators were analyzed on days 28 and 70 of lactation. Alpha-lactalbumin plays a key role in lactose synthesis in the mammary glands of domestic animals. This study evaluated Hair (188), Saanen (82), Kilis (63), and Honamli (183) goat breeds, with the primary goal of investigating DNA polymorphism of Mva I RFLP at exon 3 of the alpha-lactalbumin gene. Polymerase chain reaction and restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) was employed to genotype a total of 516 goats for Mva I polymorphism of alpha-lactalbumin. The influence of riboflavin on the function of the hypothalamo-pituitary-thyroid axis during chicken embryogenesis is poorly understood. Therefore, examination of the effects of in ovo riboflavin supplementation on the possible linkage between the thyroid gland function and chick embryonic development seems to be interesting. The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy of the repeated administration of superovulatory protocol and surgical procedure in in vivo embryo production, as well as to determine the differences in the responses to superovulatory treatment among several Turkish native goat breeds (Angora, Kilis, Honamli, Hair, and Norduz). A superovulatory treatment procedure was repeated 3 times in this study. The objective of this study was to investigate the conception rates achieved with the transfer of in-vivo–derived sexed and unsexed Holstein bovine embryos to appropriate recipients and to determine the accuracy of nonelectrophoretic PCR sexing. Seven-day-old embryos were derived in vivo by the nonsurgical flushing of the uterus. Before being vitrified and frozen some of the embryos obtained were sexed, while others were not sexed and were maintained as the control group. This study was aimed to evaluate the microflora isolated from the intestines of tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), freshwater catfish (Clarias batrachus), snakehead (Ophicephalus striatus), snakeskin gourami (Trichogaster pectoralis), climbing perch (Anabas testudineus), and river catfish (Pangasius pangasius) for their potential probiotic development. Isolates were initially screened for their inhibitory effect against one of the most common fish pathogens, Edwardsiella tarda. Positive antagonists were subsequently tested for hemolytic activity, antibiotic susceptibility, and production of bacteriocin-like inhibitory substances (BLISs). The experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of organic acid and bacterial inoculant on conservation characteristics and protein fractions as defined by the Cornell Net Carbohydrate and Protein System of barley, wheat, rye, triticale, and oat silages ensiled at their booting or dough stage of maturity. Metazoan Parasites Of Brown Meagre (Sciaena Umbra L. 1758) Caught Near Gökçeada, Turkey, Ahmet Akmirza

This study was conducted between July 2011 and January 2012 in Gökçeada, Turkey, to determine the metazoan parasite fauna of brown meagre (Sciaena umbra). The metazoan parasite fauna of 53 brown meagre samples was investigated and a total of 7 parasite species [Anoiktostoma coronatum, Paracryptogonimus aloysiae (Digenea), Longicollum pagrosomi (Acanthocephala), Contracaecum fabri (Nematoda), Trachelobdella lubrica (Hirudinea), Nerocila bivittata, and praniza larvae (Isopoda)] were identified. It was determined that Paracryptogonimus aloysiae was the dominant parasite species of brown meagre with the prevalence of 66.04% in this region. Anoiktostoma coronatum and Paracryptogonimus aloysiae were reported for the first time in Turkey.
