Cattle fed a de-oiled wet distiller’s grains plus solubles (WDGS) diet were compared to cattle fed corn or traditional (full-fat) WDGS diets to determine effects on discoloration, oxidation, and tenderness of beef aged for seven and 21 days. At seven days of aging, dietary treatment had no effect on discoloration. At 21 days of aging, beef from cattle fed de-oiled WDGS had less oxidation than the corn control and several of the full-fat WDGS treatments. The objective of this trial was to evaluate the effect of feeding different concentrations of wet distillers grains during winter backgrounding and either modified wet distillers grains or Sweet Bran® during the finishing phase on ground beef color and lipid oxidation. After a 14 day aging period, ground beef patties were made and placed in a simulated retail display for seven days. There were no overall differences in lipid oxidation between treatments but was a treatment by day interaction for discoloration. Cattle were grazed without or with energy supplementation of wet distillers grains with solubles (WDGS) during backgrounding, and were finished on a corn-based diet with or without 35% WDGS. Ground beef patties were made from shoulder clods, cooked, and stored in a refrigerated or frozen state. Cattle supplemented with WDGS had greater lipid oxidation in cooked ground beef patties regardless of finishing diet or storage type.

The community composition of the fecal microbiota was compared between beef steers which were high-shedders and low-shedders of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli. Based on Shannon and Chao 1 diversity indices, the high-shedders had a more diverse fecal bacterial community than the low-shedding steers. Members of the genus Prevotella were observed as being more abundant in the low-shedders compared to the high-shedders, while Succinivibrio were more abundant in the high-shedders. Isolation of specific bacteria which are significantly more abundant in low-shedders may pave the way to developing direct-fed microbials which are effective in reducing STEC shedding among high-shedding beef steers.

Seven research trials conducted over five years at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln were summarized to determine how animal performance changes through the finishing period on a live and carcass weight basis. Live weight, carcass weight, carcass ADG, and carcass feed efficiency all changed quadratically throughout the feeding period; live ADG and live feed efficiency declined linearly. During times of negative profit margins, optimal profitability for steers marketed on a live-basis occurred by selling early, whereas optimal profitability was achieved by feeding steers marketed on a carcass-basis longer.

Crossbred steers (n = 64) were grazed on warm- or cool-season grass-dominated pastures, without or with energy supplementation of wet distillers grains with solubles (WDGS), and were finished on a corn-based diet with or without 35% WDGS. Finishing on corn increased desirable flavor notes and decreasedundesirable flavor notes in both L. dorsi and B. femoris steaks. In addition, grazing on warm-season grasses increased the prevalence of undesirable flavors but was often dissipated by the addition WDGS supplementation. Longer aging periods tended to increase the prevalence of undesirable flavors, especially in B. femoris steaks. It is recommended producers provide WDGS supplementation, …

To determine sequence characteristics and phylogenetic relationships of the nonstructural (NS) gene, the NS genes of 9 avian influenza (AI) viruses were sequenced and compared with other Iranian AI H9N2 viruses available in GenBank. The similarity among the earliest Iranian H9N2 isolate (A/chicken/Iran/ZMT-101/1998) and recent (2007–2011) studied isolates was low (94%). Some of the studied viruses revealed substitutions in RNA-binding and effector domains as well as antigenic regions of the NS protein. Recently studied isolates have a high similarity (97.4%-98.7%) with some Pakistani isolates (like A/chicken/Sawabi/NARC-2434/2006) in the NS gene. The aim of the present study was to compare the effectiveness of cefuroxime, herd-specific autovaccine, and cefuroxime/herd-specific autovaccine treatments in eliminating S. aureus from the milk of 45 cows with subclinical mastitis. In our early work, one mutation (A898G, which caused Ser32Gly (S32G) change of mature peptide) was identified in the goat BMP15 gene and the allele G was associated with high litter size in Jining Grey goats (the goat breed with the highest fecundity in China). The aim of this study was to find polymorphisms in the actin alpha 1 gene (ACTA1) in horses belonging to different breeds and utility types and to compare them. The genomic region of the actin alpha 1 gene was positively selected in purebred horses. The objective of this study was to evaluate the genetic and phenotypic parameters for daily milk yield (DMY) in Black Bengal does. Genetic parameters were estimated using a residual maximum likelihood procedure, fitting an animal model while ignoring maternal genetic or permanent environmental effects. The least squares mean for DMY was 354.76 g. DMY was significantly (P < 0.01) affected by parity, litter size, and season of kidding. The heritability of DMY was low (0.15) and the fact that the trait can only be measured in females suggests that progeny testing may be the best sire selection method for this trait.

The present study compared superovulation and embryo recovery rates applied repeatedly during breeding and nonbreeding seasons in the same 20 Kivircik sheep. Trials 1 and 3 were performed during the breeding season and the trial 2 was performed in the nonbreeding season. We synchronized the sheep's estrus cycles and induced a superovulatory response with porcine follicle stimulating hormone (pFSH) injections. The aim of the study was to use hexapeptide combinatorial libraries to evaluate the influence of high-abundance protein depletion on low-abundance protein enrichment, protein concentration, and 2D gel quality in plasma and serum proteomes of growing piglets and calves. Depleted and nondepleted samples of plasma/serum were resolved using 2D electrophoresis (2DE). Bioinformatic analysis of the 2D gels showed an increased number of detected spots on each gel after depletion of excess high-abundance proteins in calf plasma (+26.46%) and in piglet serum (+49.40%). Phenotypic and genetic parameters among udder traits (udder depth, UD; median suspensory line, MS; fore udder attachment, FUA; rear udder height, RUH; rear udder width, RUW), final score (FS), and milk production traits (305-day milk yield, 305 DM; 305-day milk-fat yield, 305 DF; 305-day milk-protein yield, 305 DP) were estimated using a derivative-free restricted maximum likelihood procedure with an animal model. The aim of this study was to assess the content of selected minerals (Ca, K, Na, Mg, S, P, Pb, Zn, Mn, Fe, and Ni) and moisture values in types of pastırma (sırt, kuşgömü, bohça, and şekerpare), a dry-cured meat product. Forty-four samples of pastırma were collected from Turkey and analyzed using inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry (ICP/OES) for quantitative determination. Na content was the highest out of all the other minerals in all the pastırma types (31.9-47.7 g kg^{-1} dry weight). The midgut bacterial flora of post-blood meal and starved or digested blood meal of hard ticks (Hyalomma anatolicum) from goats were analyzed using BOX PCR, ERIC PCR and 16S rDNA gene sequencing. BOX PCR and ERIC PCR showed dissimilar band patterns between microbial isolates from the midgut of the ticks. The objective of this retrospective study was to describe the clinical presentation and ultrasonographic findings in water buffaloes suffering from congestive heart failure. Fifty-three buffaloes with congestive heart failure, which was confirmed postmortem, were included. The final diagnoses were traumatic pericarditis (n = 38) and vegetative endocarditis (n = 15). Ten healthy buffaloes were enrolled in this study as controls. The main clinical presentations were those related to right-sided congestive heart failure including peripheral edema, venous distension and jugular pulsation, and a sharp drop in milk yield. Neosporosis and brucellosis are 2 well-known diseases causing bovine abortion. This study determined co-infection of Neospora caninum and Brucella abortus in buffaloes for the first time in Pakistan. A monoclonal antibody based competitive ELISA was used to test buffalo sera (n = 312) for N. caninum specific antibodies, while rose bengal plate test assessed B. abortus antibodies. N. caninum and B. abortus prevalence was 42.8% (±6.7, 95% C.I.) and 12.2% (±3.6, 95% C.I.), respectively. Buffaloes >3 years old exhibited higher prevalence than younger ones. Chitosan (CH) has been shown to be a promising natural antimicrobial agent. This study examined the effects on rumen metabolism when providing diets containing high forage (HFD), low forage (LFD), and maize silage (MSD) to a 24-h batch culture in which the diets were not supplemented (control) or were supplemented with CH (100 mg/L), sunflower oil (SF, 35.0 g/kg dry matter), rapeseed oil (RP, 35.0 g/kg dry matter), or SF and RF with chitosan combinations (SFCH and RPCH). Dry matter digestibility in the batch culture was influenced by CH and was decreased in HFD compared with the control (P < 0.01). Decreasing total number of protozoa and the number of Entodinium spp. was evident, especially in LFD and MSD, with all additives. RPCH had a predominantly adverse effect on Dasytricha ruminantium in MSD. Interactions of the diets × additives in the majority of rumen ciliate populations were detected. The concentrations of trans-vaccenic acid and conjugated linoleic acid (c9, t11-CLA) were unchanged by chitosan. However, the combination of SF and RF with chitosan (SFCH and RPCH) positively affected fatty acid profiles, which might be related to differences in diets, SF or RP composition, and different microbial activity in the batch cultures.

One hundred and two samples of mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis), harvested from approved shellfish coastal water in northern Greece, were screened for the presence and antimicrobial resistance of Listeria monocytogenes. Listeria spp. were isolated according to International Organization for Standardization method 11290-1: 1996/FDAM 1: 2004(E) and identified using a multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) system. The serovar identity of L. monocytogenes isolates was also determined with a multiplex PCR assay. The antimicrobial profile of the isolates was determined by the disk diffusion method. However, there are few scientific studies detailing the mechanism of action of RAC and its possible metabolic pathways in swine.
