Visual evoked potential (VEP) is a useful technique for evaluation of optic nerve pathway and diagnosis of human Alzheimer’s disease. Canine cognitive dysfunction (CCD) is an age-related neurobehavioural syndrome which is commonly underdiagnosed in dogs. In the present study, VEPs were recorded from 28 Pomeranian dogs including 9 normal dogs aged between 1-8 years, 9 normal dogs aged over 8 years, and 10 dogs with signs of CCD. GnRH is not only a primary regulator of gonadal function but also a possible factor which affects other pituitary cells out of gonadotrophs. Recently, it has been reported that GnRH might induce the release of GH, but the effects on GH and other pituitary hormones of GnRH still remained controversial. Prevalence and antimicrobial resistance of Salmonella and Campylobacter species isolated from duck laying flocks in 7 confinement systems and 7 free-grazing systems were determined in central Thailand. In the confinement system, 13.8% (88/639) of Campylobacter spp. were isolated from cloacal swabs; 72.7% was identified as C. jejuni and 27.3% was identified as C. coli. From drinking and surface water samples, 60.0% of Campylobacter spp. were isolated; all was identified as C. jejuni. Matrix metalloproteinase-2 and -9 (MMP-2 and -9), gelatinases among MMPs, are associated with cell migration, invasion, metastasis and angiogenesis in human solid tumor. The prognostic value of gelatinases in canine lymphoma remains equivocal. To evaluate the relation between serum gelatinases and canine lymphoma, gelatin zymography was used to detect the levels of serum MMP-2 and MMP-9 gelatinase activities in lymphoma-bearing dogs. In this retrospective study, twenty-four canine patients with different subtypes of lymphoma were identified according to the histopathogical examination, and 10 healthy dogs were included as control. The aims of this study were to investigate the levels of lactate and glucose in dogs during swimming and to determine the maximal lactate steady state in small and large breeds of dog. Twelve healthy dogs, including small breed (n = 6) and large breed (n = 6), were the study subjects. After swimming for different periods (5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 min), blood was collected from the dogs which was then used to analyze changes in lactate and glucose levels during swimming. Degenerative mitral valve disease (DMVD) is the major cause of mitral valve regurgitation and heart failure in dogs. The regurgitation of mitral valve may affect blood pressure without clinical presentation. The aims of this study were to compare the systolic blood pressure between normal dogs and dogs affected with asymptomatic DMVD (class B ACVIM classification) and to determine the relationship between echocardiographic values and blood pressure levels. Firocoxib and carprofen, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), are used in the treatment of canine osteoarthritis. This study evaluated the efficacy and provided information of these NSAIDs in clinical practice. Sixteen healthy dogs of large breeds over 5 years old without systemic diseases and pregnancy that had coxofemoral osteoarthritis were divided into 2 groups, firocoxib group (n=9) and carprofen group (n=7). The study was conducted for 16 weeks. In this study, nine crude extracts from Thai plants in the Moraceae and Leguminosae families were screened for their immunoadjuvant activities on the proliferation of swine lymphocytes and the maturation of monocyte-derived dendritic cells (MoDCs). The study demonstrated that the total phenolic content was significantly higher in the extract from Artocarpus gomezianus (264.17±6.5 mg of gallic acid equivalents/gm of extract) than in the extracts from the other plants. The crude extract from the root bark of A. gomezianus significantly increased the proliferative response of peripheral blood mononuclear cells measured using both MTT and CFSE assays (p < 0.05). In addition, the A. gomezianus extract induced the maturation of MoDCs through major histocompatibility (MHC) Class II and CD80 expression. Constituents of phenolic compounds, in particular tannins and flavonoids in the gamma-benzopyrone nucleus group, may be important for the immunoadjuvant effect. The results of this study suggest that the extract from A. gomezianus have immunoadjuvant activities that may be developed as vaccine adjuvants.

The effect of low-dose chemotherapy on tumor motility of canine oral malignant melanoma has been investigated on an in vitro model using low-dose cyclophosphamide and piroxicam. Cyclophosphamide, at a concentration of 0.1 mg/mL in culture medium, significantly inhibited tumor cell migration/invasion through trans-well assays and suppressed both ERK and NF-κB signaling, the latter of which was observed through IκB-α and P-IκBα expression. Furthermore, in combination with a COX-2 inhibitor, i.e. piroxicam (0.38 mg/mL in culture medium), cyclophosphamide revealed a potential anti-migration effect over the single piroxicam treatment on a wound assay. This study investigated the level of protection generated by vaccination with a live attenuated infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) vaccine, H120 strain against variant genotype IBV isolated in Thailand. Sixty 1-day-old female broiler chickens were randomly divided into 4 groups of 15 chickens each. The chickens in Group 1 were vaccinated at 1 day old, whereas the chickens in Group 2 were vaccinated at 7 days old. Tembusu virus (TMUV) namely KPS54A61 has spread in duck farms in many provinces in Thailand since 2010. The morbidity ranges from 15-30% and the mortality ranges from 10-15%. All infected ducks exhibit nervous signs including ataxia and paralysis. TMUV was successfully isolated from the brain and spinal cord of infected ducks by using C6/36 and Vero cells, but the typical cytopathic effect (CPE) was presented in the Vero cells only. Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) and Feline leukemia virus (FeLV) are known as pathogens associated with chronic diseases in cat. This present study determined the prevalence of FIV and FeLV infections in Bangkok and its vicinity, including Nonthaburi and Pathumthani, during April 2013-March 2014 in owned cats. A total of 777 serum or plasma samples were submitted to a private veterinary laboratory in Bangkok. The prevalence of FIV infection, FeLV infection and co-infection was 5.4% (42/777), 16.5% (128/777) and 3.5% (27/777), respectively. Fifteen Dachshunds, 6 females and 9 males, aged from 3 to 7.1 years old and weighing from 8.9 to 18.4 kg, were presented with various degrees of paralysis with deep pain on both limbs. The existence of clinical signs was observed by the owners and ranged from 1 to over 7 days. These dogs showed grades of dysfunction ranging from 2 to 5 depending on neurological examination. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of Lactobacillus plantarum on enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) and Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) in order to reduce lesions and fecal shedding for the control of colibacillosis and edema disease in postweaning pigs. ETEC K88 colonized in greater abundance on the surface of the small intestinal tract of non-L. plantarum-fed pigs compared to L. plantarum-fed pigs. Recent, severe outbreaks of porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) in Asia and North America highlight the need for well-validated diagnostic tests for the identification of PEDV infected animals and evaluation of their immune status to this virus. PEDV was first detected in the U.S. in May 2013 and spread rapidly across the country. When correlating brain size and structure with behavioural and environmental characteristics, a range of techniques can be utilised. This study used gobiid fishes to quantitatively compare brain volumes obtained via three different methods; these included the commonly used techniques of histology and approximating brain volume to an idealised ellipsoid, and the recently established technique of X-ray micro-computed tomography (micro-CT). It was found that all three methods differed significantly from one another in their volume estimates for most brain lobes. The diversity and ecology of cestodes from the northern fur seals, Callorhinus ursinus (NFS), were examined using newly collected material from 756 humanely harvested subadult males between 2011 and 2014. NFSs were collected from five different haul-outs on St. Paul Island, Alaska. A total of 14,660 tapeworms were collected with a prevalence of 98.5% and intensity up to 107 cestodes per host (mean intensity 19.7 ± 16.5 SD). Three species of tapeworms were found: Adenocephalus pacificus (Diphyllobothriidea) was the most prevalent (prevalence 97.4%), followed by Diplogonoporus tetrapterus (49.7%), and 5 immature specimens of Anophryocephalus cf. ochotensis (Tetrabothriidea) (0.5%). Four experiments were conducted to evaluate estrus synchronization and heifer development systems. In the first experiment delaying AI 19 h following GnRH administration in a hybrid estrus detection and time AI protocol was evaluated. Final pregnancy rate was not different among heifers detected in estrus, AI at the time GnRH administration, or delayed AI. There is an urgent need for new antibiotics and alternative strategies to combat multidrug-resistant bacterial pathogens, which are a growing clinical issue. Repurposing existing approved drugs with known pharmacology and toxicology is an alternative strategy to accelerate antimicrobial research and development. In this study, we show that celecoxib, a marketed inhibitor of cyclooxygenase-2, exhibits broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive pathogens from a variety of genera, including Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, Listeria, Bacillus, and Mycobacterium, but not against Gram-negative pathogens. The brains of odontocetes (toothed whales) look grossly different from their terrestrial relatives. Because of their adaptation to the aquatic environment and their reliance on echolocation, the odontocetes’ auditory system is both unique and crucial to their survival. Yet, scant data exist about the functional organization of the cetacean auditory system. A predominant hypothesis is that the primary auditory cortex lies in the suprasylvian gyrus along the vertex of the hemispheres, with this position induced by expansion of ‘associative0 regions in lateral and caudal directions. Background: Brachycephalic dog breeds are increasingly common. Canine brachycephaly has been associated with upper respiratory tract (URT) disorders but reliable prevalence data remain lacking. Using primary-care veterinary clinical data, this study aimed to report the prevalence and breed-type risk factors for URT disorders in dogs. Results: The sampling frame included 170,812 dogs attending 96 primary-care veterinary clinics participating within the VetCompass Programme. Background: Contaminated complete feed and porcine plasma are risk factors for PEDV introduction to farms and a liquid antimicrobial has been proven useful for reducing risk. This study provides information on the survivability of PEDV across common swine feed ingredients in the presence or absence of the liquid antimicrobial.

Strongylus vulgaris is the most pathogenic nematode parasite of horses. Its extensive migration in the mesenteric blood vessels can lead to life-threatening intestinal infarctions. Recent work has shown that this parasite is still identified among managed horse populations. A serum enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) has been developed for the detection of migrating larvae of S. vulgaris. Previous work has documented an increase in ELISA values following larvicidal treatment with ivermectin and suggested that the target parasite antigen is primarily produced by the later larval stages. The reference assembly for the domestic horse, EquCab2, published in 2009, was built using approximately 30 million Sanger reads from a Thoroughbred mare named Twilight. Contiguity in the assembly was facilitated using nearly 315 thousand BAC end sequences from Twilight's half brother Bravo. Since then, it has served as the foundation for many genome-wide analyses that include not only the modern horse, but ancient horses and other equid species as well.
