A 3-year-old female Maltese dog was admitted with cough, dyspnea, and gasping. There was no sign of trauma in history taking. It was speculated that pneumothorax occurred in the right pleural space after X-ray examination. Thoracocentesis and chest tube were applied for 5 days. The symptoms of dyspnea and cough were, however, not relieved or recurred. Exploratory thoracotomy was considered to be the most appropriate approach. Spongiform and air-containing tissue was identified in the whole parenchyma in the right middle lobe. Total lobectomy was performed and then a chest tube was inserted. The aim of this case report was to present clinical signs and radiographic features of one of the most important peripheral vestibular diseases in horse, and also present the treatment for this disease. Temporohyoid osteoarthropathy (THO) is caused by proliferation of the proximal stylohyoid bone and petrous temporal bone which finally results in ankylosis of the temporohyoid joint. Any sudden movement may result in damage to the joint and also structures in its vicinity. Some peripheral nerves especially cranial nerve VII and VIII may be affected and THO manifestation appears. Preservation of blood components for transfusion is a long-standing phenomenon. However, studies of cryopreservation of leukodepleted canine erythrocytes are quite limited and no studies are available with respect to morphological evaluation of erythrocytes during the cryopreservation process. The aim of this study was to determine morphological changes caused by cryopreservation, storage and leukocyte filtration. Healthy adult dogs meeting the criteria for blood transfusion were used in this study. Packed red blood cells (pRBCs) were obtained from each dog. The samples were divided into two groups. Background: Equine besnoitiosis, caused by Besnoitia bennetti, and equine protozoal myeloencephalitis (EPM), caused by Sarcocystis neurona and Neospora hughesi are relevant equine diseases in the Americas that have been scarcely studied in Europe. Thus, a serosurvey of these cystogenic coccidia was carried out in Southern Spain. A cross-sectional study was performed and serum samples from horses (n = 553), donkeys (n = 85) and mules (n = 83) were included. It is well known that arginine vasotocin (AVT) in birds is involved in physiological homeostasis such as cardiovascular, osmotic regulation as well as reproductive functions. Pertinent to these physiological functions, AVT immunoreactive (-ir) neurons in the hypothalamus have been found associated with hemorrhage, dehydration, oviposition and other physiological regulation. Evidence, however, suggests that AVT also plays significant roles in modulating behavior, memory, stress, and food intake. Research has recently demonstrated that larval zebrafish show similar molecular responses to nociception to those of adults. Our study explored whether unprotected larval zebrafish exhibited altered behaviour after exposure to noxious chemicals and screened a range of analgesic drugs to determine their efficacy to reduce these responses. This approach aimed to validate larval zebrafish as a reliable replacement for adults as well as providing a high-throughput means of analysing behavioural responses. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small, non-coding RNAs which are produced throughout the body. Individual tissues tend to have a specific expression profile and excrete many of these miRNAs into circulation. These circulating miRNAs may be diagnostically valuable biomarkers for assessing the presence of disease while minimizing invasive testing. In women, numerous circulating miRNAs have been identified which change significantly during pregnancy-related complications (e.g. chorioamnionitis, eclampsia, recurrent pregnancy loss); however, no prior work has been done in this area in the horse. Cereal grains are often included in equine diets. When starch intake exceeds foregut digestion starch will reach the hindgut, impacting microbial ecology. Probiotics (e.g., lactobacilli) are reported to mitigate GI dysbioses in other species. This study was conducted to determine the effect of exogenous lactobacilli on pH and the growth of amylolytic and lactate-utilizing bacteria. Feces were collected from 3 mature geldings fed grass hay with access to pasture. Malignant cells require a large amount of iron for cell growth. Transferrin transfers iron from blood to cells by reacting with transferrin receptor (TfR). In humans, transferrin and transferrin receptor correlate with oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC); however, the association with canine oral tumor has not been studied. This study aimed to investigate saliva and serum transferrin and tissue transferrin receptor in canine OSCC and oral melanoma (OM). Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) patients have elevated plasma saturated free fatty acid levels. These toxic fatty acids can induce liver cell death and our recent results demonstrated that the biliary epithelium may be susceptible to lipotoxicity. Here, we explored the molecular mechanisms of cholangiocyte lipoapoptosis in cell culture and in an animal model of NASH. Treatment of cholangiocytes with palmitate (PA) showed increased caspase 3/7 activity and increased levels of cleaved poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase and cleaved caspase 3, demonstrating cholangiocyte lipoapoptosis. Interestingly, treatment with PA significantly increased the levels of microRNA miR-34a, a pro-apoptotic microRNA known to be elevated in NASH. …

The objective of this study was to evaluate type 2 porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV)-based modified live vaccine in a herd with concurrent circulation of type 1 and type 2 PRRSV. Type 2 PRRSV-based modified live vaccine improved average daily gain by 48.24 grams/pig/day (631.17 grams/pig/day in the vaccinated group vs 582.93 grams/pig/day in the unvaccinated group; P < 0.05). Pathological examination indicated that the vaccination effectively reduced microscopic lung lesions compared with the control animals. The protection of this vaccine against type 1 and type 2 PRRSV provides clinical control of co-infection with both genotypes under field conditions.

To date, the interferon gamma (IFN-γ) assay has become an important diagnostic tool which is applied alternatively to define infection of intracellular pathogens. In this study, the molecular characteristics of IFN-γ in Rusa deer (Rusa timorensis), Hog deer (Axis porcinus), Sambar deer (Rusa unicolor) and Eld’s deer (Rucervus eldii) were determined. Among the cervid family, the analysis of IFN-γ cDNA sequences indicated 5 polymorphism nucleotide positions. Deduced IFN-γ amino acid compositions among the cervid group were negligibly different (98-100% homology). Preliminary quantification of IFN-γ mRNA expression in the cervidae by reverse transcription quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) was demonstrated. …

This study was done to investigate the viability and effectiveness of cytochrome c oxidase I (COI) gene in DNA barcoding for identification of Chinese native chickens. Two sequences of the COI gene of 64 chickens of four Chinese native breeds (16 of each breed) were analyzed by amplification and sequencing. Results showed that the bar1 sequence of COI had lower polymorphism compared to bar2. Bar1 had 1 polymorphic site and 2 haplotypes, while bar2 had 4 polymorphic sites and 8 haplotypes. An irregular, subcutaneous mass (2x3x2 cm) located between the first and second digits of the left hindlimb of a nine-year-old, male, captive capybara (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris) was biopsied. Microscopically, the mass scattered throughout the dermis. The neoplastic cells were arranged in solid-sheet patterns and comprised of pleomorphic histiocytic cells with pleomorphic nuclei and abundant eosinophillic cytoplasm. Mitotic figures were 2-3 cells/HPF. Numerous, multinucleated, giant cells, up to 10 nuclei/cells, were also prominently observed and found scattered throughout the mass. Immunohistochemically, the neoplastic cells were strongly positive for vimentin and ionized calcium-binding adaptor molecule 1 (Iba-1), while immunoreactivity for cytokeratin was negative. …
