Oxidative stress can result from either the excessive production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) or an impaired antioxidant system, or both. It causes damage to lipids, proteins and DNA. Therefore, oxidative stress may be involved in carcinogenesis, and is associated with many types of cancer in dogs. The objective of this study was to compare the levels of malondialdehyde, protein hydroperoxides, glutathione, retinol and alpha-tocopherol between dogs with mast cell tumors and clinically healthy controls. The objective of this study was to determine the impact of abnormal physical characteristics for monitoring aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) contamination in commercial dairy concentrate feeds. The study was conducted during March to May 2013 using 82 dairy farms in Chiang Mai province, Thailand. All feed samples were collected from new packages and their physical characteristics were subsequently determined. AFB1 concentrations in the samples were measured using the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), and feed samples with AFB1 of more than 5 µg/Kg were determined as AFB1 contaminated samples. Comparative Effect Of Dl-Methionine And Dl-Methionine Hydroxy Analogue Supplemented Diet On Productive Performance, Fat Accumulation And Lipid Profile In Blood Of Meat-Type Ducks, Chanwit Kaewtapee, Chaiyapoom Bunchasak
The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
The objective of this study was to compare the effect of DL-methionine (DLM) and DL-methionine hydroxy analogue (DL-MHA) supplementation on the growth performance, carcass quality, fat accumulation and lipid profile in blood of meat-type duck. Three hundred male Cherry Valley ducks were divided into 3 groups with 4 replications of 25 ducklings each. Each group was given a diet as follows: 1) basal diet, 2) basal diet + DLM, and 3) basal diet + DLMHA. The results show that dietary supplementation with DLM and DL-MHA increased body weight (P<0.01), feed intake (P<0.01) and pectoralis major (P<0.05), but decreased abdominal fat (P<0.01) when compared to the basal diet. Supplementation with DL-MHA also resulted in greater levels of triglycerides (P<0.05), low-density lipoprotein (P<0.05) and cholesterol (P<0.05) in the blood compared to the DLM group, in addition to greater levels of triglycerides (P<0.05) and high-density lipoprotein (P<0.05) compared to the basal diet. Furthermore, supplementation with DLM was shown to lower the level of plasma uric acid (P<0.05) compared to the basal diet. It is concluded that DL-MHA can promote the same productive performance in meat-type ducks as DLM, but the fat accumulation and lipid profile in blood was greater with the DL-MHA supplementation than with DLM. Furthermore, the underlying mechanism of different effects between DL-MHA and DLM on the lipid metabolism in ducks should be further investigated.

In 2014, porcine epidemic diarrhea (PED) outbreaks characterized by mild clinical disease and low preweaning mortality increased in frequency in Thailand. An outbreak investigation, based on the detection of the classical variant and the allowance of the herd owners, was conducted in 5 swine herds and 25 intestinal samples were submitted from herds with outbreaks of diarrhea for sequencing analysis. PEDV isolation and complete nucleotide sequences of the spike (S) glycoprotein were determined. The PEDV isolate EAS1 was identified. Feline adrenal disorders that affect the size of the adrenal glands can be detected by diagnostic imaging including ultrasonography and Computed Tomography (CT). The objectives of this study were to compare the appearance of the adrenal gland in healthy cats between these two techniques and establish the reference values of the CT dimensions of the adrenal gland in cats. A 6-month-old French Bulldog had been presented with left eye blepharospasm. The puppy had been treated with topical antibiotics for weeks from the local veterinarian. However, blepharospasm still persisted. Ophthalmic examination from distance showed mild conjunctival hyperemia. Excessive tear was observed around the eyeball. Close ophthalmic examinations revealed prominent conjunctival blood vessels at the outer portion of the nictitating membrane. Clump of abnormal hairs were identified at the ventro-nasal region of the palpebral conjunctiva, next to eyelid margin. Schirmer tear test 1 level of the left eye was 25 mm wetness, while it was 16 on the right.

Campylobacter jejuni is a prevalent infectious enteritis mainly foodborne from chickens. Despite of reducing C. jejuni food contamination dramatically decreases campylobacteriosis, few effective approaches are available for the bacterial reduction in chickens. The aim of this study was to use microbial metabolic product deoxycholic acid (DCA) to reduce C. jejuni chicken colonization. Broiler chicks were fed 0 or 1.5 g/kg DCA, lithocholic acid (LCA), or urodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) in diets or orally gavaged with cholic acid (CA, 1.5g/kg body weight). Animal hoarding is a severe problem in the field of human-animal interaction. The goal of this study was to assess the current situation of animal hoarding in Germany. Reports of animal hoarding cases were collected from animal shelters and public media between January 2012 and December 2015; 120 cases were analyzed. A total of 9,174 animals were hoarded during the investigated time period. The results showed that cases involving cats were most common, followed by cases involving dogs and small mammals. Recent advances in genomic sequencing technology and computational assembly methods have allowed scientists to improve reference genome assemblies in terms of contiguity and composition. EquCab2, a reference genome for the domestic horse, was released in 2007. Although of equal or better quality compared to other first-generation Sanger assemblies, it had many of the shortcomings common to them. In 2014, the equine genomics research community began a project to improve the reference sequence for the horse, building upon the solid foundation of EquCab2 and incorporating new short-read data, long-read data, and proximity ligation data. The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of Staphylococcus aureus and coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS) isolated from goat milk and cheese, as well as their toxin genes and slime genes. Toxoplasmosis and neosporosis are parasitic diseases of livestock globally. In this study, we investigate the presence of Neospora caninum and Toxoplasma gondii in 250 beef cattle from Kanchanaburi, Ratchaburi and Nakhon Patom provinces, Thailand comparing with the results from 5 years earlier. The serological diagnosis for toxoplasmosis and neosporosis were performed by indirect ELISA technique using recombinant antigens TgGRA7 and NcSAG1, respectively. Furthermore, risk factors at the animal- and herd-levels were also evaluated. Seroprevalence of T. gondii, N. caninum and co-infections were 15.2%, 20.8% and 27.2%, respectively. The objective of this retrospective study was to distinguish between dogs with pulmonary hypertension (PH) and non-PH by using parameters obtained from thoracic radiographs. Data of 72 dogs of small breeds aged more than 1 year old and weighing less than 10 kg were retrieved. Echocardiography was used as a gold standard to diagnose PH and separate the dogs into two groups: PH (n=15) and non-PH (n=57). Seven formulae were created from measurements on right lateral and ventrodorsal radiographic views. Classical swine fever virus (CSFV) contributes to economic loss of swine production in endemic countries. Serum neutralization and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) are serological tests commonly used for monitoring CSFV antibody status with serum samples. This experiment evaluated the detection of CSFV antibody in oral fluid samples in commercial ELISA test kit by in vitro study of negative oral fluid mixed with serum of known CSFV serum neutralizing (SN) titer and in vivo oral fluid samples obtained from experimental animals. The clinical benefits of Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) have been well documented in heart failure patients. In veterinary medicine, however, the clinical benefits of CoQ10 have not been well established in dogs with heart diseases. This study aimed to determine the effects of CoQ10 supplementation on 1) preventing myocardial injury 2) cardiac function 3) autonomic balance in dogs with myxomatous degenerative mitral valve disease (MMVD). Thirteen dogs with MMVD at ACVIM stage C were recruited in this study. Dogs were further divided into group I (Body weight [BW] < 6 kg.; n = 7) and group II (BW ≥ 6 kg.; n = 6). Cardiac troponin I (cTnI), echocardiographic examination, and 2 hours of Holter recording were performed on Day 0 and after receiving CoQ10 at 100 mg/dog twice daily for 28 days. CoQ10 caused a reduction of cTnI level in 71% of the dogs. Median cTnI tended to cause tended to decline but not significantly. Systolic function [i.e. fractional shortening (FS) and ejection fraction (EF)] increased significantly by 8 % and 9% (P < 0.05), respectively in group I after CoQ10 supplementation. Other echocardiographic parameters were not altered in either group. HRV analysis revealed no change in autonomic function and balance. cTnI negatively correlated with FS (P < 0.01) and positively correlated with LF/HF ratio (P < 0.05). In conclusion, this study demonstrated the clinical benefits of CoQ10 supplementation in dogs with MMVD. CoQ10 improves cardiac function in small dogs with MMVD. Finally, supplementation of CoQ10 in dogs should be based on body weight.

Six dogs were diagnosed with pulmonary hypertension (PH) secondary to chronic degenerative mitral valve disease (CDMVD) on echocardiography. Imatinib (3 mg/kg, every 24 hours, PO) was initiated without any changes to the background therapy to treat the PH. Follow-up evaluations at 1, 3, 5 and 6 months revealed substantial clinical and hemodynamic improvements. One dog showed deterioration after the imatinib withdrawal to necessitate a restart therapy. No side effects were observed throughout the 6-month treatment course. Low-dose imatinib may provide a promising treatment alternative for CDMVD-associated PH in dogs.

Absence of sexual dimorphism makes it difficult to determine bird’s sex. A number of both invasive and noninvasive methods as a DNA template of sampling for avian sexing can be used. The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy of different sources of DNA for avian sexing by PCR. Samples were collected from dried blood spots, buccal swabs, cloacal swabs and feces. The highest success rate for sexing determination was from the dried blood spots, accounting for 100%, while those from the buccal swabs, cloacal swabs and feces were 74%, 75.47% and 29.17%, respectively. Molecular characterization is the effective method to study the relation among international strains and the epidemiology of MG transmission. In this study, 17 Thai MG strains were characterized by using 2 molecular assays including random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) and gene-targeted sequencing (GTS) assays. The therapeutic efficacy of sulfadimethoxine-ormetoprim (SDMX-OMP) against Streptococcus agalactiae (S. agalactiae) infection in tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) was examined in tilapia fry. Fish (3+0.44 g) underwent 3-hour immersion challenge with 50% infective dose (2.58 x 106 CFU/ml) of S. agalactiae and were treated at 24 hours post challenge with daily dosages of 30 and 50 mg SDMX-OMP/kg body weight (BW) feeding medication for 7 days. The effects of an exogenous androgenic hormone on sex differentiation were examined in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) and red tilapia (Oreochromis spp.) fry. Tilapia aquaculture in Thailand commonly applies methyltestosterone at the dose of 80 mg/kg diet on the first feeding of fish fry for 21-28 days to achieve male-monosex crop.
