Habitat fragmentation and degradation have led to a proliferation of small and isolated populations that are vulnerable to genetic erosion. Reduction in habitat and concomitant declines in population connectivity can expediate the collapse of species that exist as natural metapopulations. In recent years, Allegheny woodrats (Neotoma magister) have experienced local extirpations and declines in genetic diversity across their range due to disease-related mortality, reduced food availability, and disruption of connectivity among subpopulations. In response, we developed a captive-breeding program to facilitate genetic management of isolated woodrat populations in Indiana. Between 2010 and 2012, 27 captive-reared individuals were released to four …

Operating as ecological engineers, the increased distribution and abundance of wild hogs (Sus scrofa) has caused considerable socio-economic impacts. The international scope of economic research providing wild hog damage estimates are often confined to agricultural crops, while damage estimates among forest plantations are lacking. In Alabama, private landowners hold the majority of timberland acreage and are less equipped to absorb financial losses from wild hog damage than their industrial counterparts. A survey was conducted to estimate the economic impact of wild hogs, namely costs of damage and control, to privately owned forestlands. The survey was distributed in the …

Toxic baiting of wild pigs (Sus scrofa) is a potential new tool for population control and damage reduction in the US. Field trials testing a prototype toxic bait (HOGGONE 2 containing 5% sodium nitrite [SN]), though, revealed that wild pigs spilled small particles of toxic bait outside of bait stations which subsequently created hazards for non-target species that consumed those particles, primarily passerine birds. To deter non-target birds from consuming particles of spilled bait, we tested four deterrents at mock bait sites (i.e., baited with bird seed) in north-central Colorado, USA during April–May 2020. We found a programable, inflatable deterrent …

A challenge that conservation practitioners face is manipulating behavior of nuisance species. The turkey vulture (Cathartes aura) can cause substantial damage to aircraft if struck. The goal of this study was to assess vulture responses to unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) for use as a possible dispersal tool. Our treatments included three platforms (fixed-wing, multirotor, and a predator-like ornithopter [powered by flapping flight]) and two approach types (30 m overhead or targeted towards a vulture) in an operational context. We evaluated perceived risk as probability of reaction, reaction time, flight-initiation distance (FID), vulture remaining index, and latency to return. …

Management Strategies For Improving Survival Of Piglets From Hyperprolific Sows, R.N. Kirkwood, P. Langendijk, J. Carr
The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
In efforts to improve profitability, sows have been subject to ongoing selection for larger litters. The current dogma is that larger litters improve sow productivity. This review, however, will question the validity of this assumption. It is inescapable that very large litters will have longer farrowing durations, lower average and more variable birth weights, and the sows will have insufficient teats available to feed their piglets. This is a recipe for increased piglet mortality with associated ethical considerations. This review will examine methods employed to address these challenges posed by larger litters in order to improve piglet survival. Producers, however, …

Banteng (Bos javanicus), an endangered, wild ungulate, plays a major role in seed dispersal and as a prey animal in Thailand. The population of wild banteng is threatened by poaching and habitat losses. Captive breeding management of banteng has been established and reintroduction of banteng has been successful in some areas. This study investigated the genetic variation of wild and captive banteng, based on mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and the Y-chromosome. The mtDNA analysis revealed three novel maternal haplotypes. The Y-chromosome analysis showed two Y-chromosome haplotypes based on the SRY region in the Thai population. This region may be useful as …

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
Acquired idiopathic megaoesophagus in dogs is rarely found in Indonesia. In this case report, a dachshund dog was presented with a history of vomiting after eating. Clinical examination, complete blood count, kidney, and liver tests identified only minor dehydration. On observation of the dog after eating, the sign reported as vomiting was confirmed as regurgitation. Radiography and contrast studies identified a significantly dilated oesophagus. With an absence of other clinical abnormalities, the dog was diagnosed with idiopathic megaoesophagus and prescribed treatment with sildenafil twice daily at 0.75mg/kg for five days, along with postural management of feeding. Treatment resulted in cessation …

Recent increases in turkey vulture (Cathartes aura) and black vulture (Coragyps atratus) populations in North America have been attributed in part to their success adapting to human-modified landscapes. However, the capacity for such landscapes to generate favorable roosting conditions for these species has not been thoroughly investigated. We assessed the role of anthropogenic and natural landscape elements on roosting habitat selection of 11 black and 7 turkey vultures in coastal South Carolina, USA using a GPS satellite transmitter dataset derived from previous research. Our dataset spanned 2006–2012 and contained data from 7916 nights of roosting. Landscape …

Background: The prevalence of avian haemosporidian parasites and the factors influencing infection in the Colorado Rocky Mountains are largely unknown. With climate change expected to promote the expansion of vector and avian blood parasite distributions, baseline knowledge and continued monitoring of the prevalence and diversity of these parasites is needed.
Methods: Using an occupancy modeling framework, we conducted a survey of haemosporidian parasite species infecting an avian community in the Colorado Rocky Mountains in order to estimate the prevalence and diversity of blood parasites and to investigate species-level and individual-level characteristics that may influence infection.
Results: We estimated the prevalence …

Anthrax is a disease of concern in many mammals, including humans. Management primarily consists of prevention through vaccination and tracking clinical-level observations because environmental isolation is laborious and bacterial distribution across large geographic areas diffi cult to confi rm. Feral swine (Sus scrofa) are an invasive species with an extensive range in the southern United States that rarely succumbs to anthrax. We present evidence that feral swine might serve as biosentinels based on comparative seroprevalence in swine from historically defi ned anthrax-endemic and non–anthraxendemic regions of Texas. Overall seropositivity was 43.7% (n = 478), and logistic regression revealed county endemicity …

The objective of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic performance of a basal serum thyroxine (T4) and thyrotropin (TSH) combination test for the diagnosis of canine hypothyroidism in clinical practice. It was hypothesized that the usefulness of basal T4 and TSH combination test in dogs with suspected non-thyroidal illness syndrome would be different with that in previous studies. The data of this study were searched for dogs who underwent both TSH stimulation test and basal serum T4 and TSH combination test. Forty-four cases were classified into either of three groups (hypothyroid, intermediate, or euthyroid) according to the results of …

Acute diarrhea is a common clinical sign in dogs which the pathogenesis has associated with altered gut microbiome compositions and influenced by diet, environment, and medication. However, the impact of gut microbiome on dog health has still not been well elucidated in Thailand. This study aims to investigate the alterations of the fecal microbiome in dogs with diarrhea (<3 days) compared to healthy dogs. Fresh feces were collected once from each dog, and DNA extraction was performed following the QIAamp DNA stool mini kit protocol. The 16s rRNA gene, then, amplified and analyzed by the next-generation DNA sequencing technology. The results showed a significant reduction of the evenness and Shannon index in dogs with the diarrhea group. The most dominant phylum in healthy dogs, Firmicutes, was markedly declined. Additionally, significant decreases in bacterial abundances were observed in twelve genera. To the best of our knowledge, seven of them were first described in their alterations including Clostridium sensu stricto 1, Lachnospiraceae NKA4136 group, Erysipelatoclostridium, Tyzzerella 3, Alloprevotella and Slackia. Therefore, these findings disclose the new possible biomarkers for intestinal diseases and the effect of ordinary diets on the fecal microbiome in dog health, Thailand.

Canine vector-borne diseases (CVBDs) are prevalent worldwide, including Thailand. Vectors can transmit more than one pathogen, and coinfections between blood parasites and/or filariae have been reported. Pathogenesis may affect the health status of infected dogs. Hematological, blood chemistry, and serum protein profile abnormalities can be used to screen for underlining causes of CVBDs. The aim of this study is to analyze the hematological and serum protein profiles as well as CRP in CVBD coinfection cases. In this study, 22 blood parasite coinfection cases are examined and classified into two groups: blood parasite coinfection (group 1: n = 16) and blood …

Small-scale commercial chicken farming represents an important source of income to rural households in the Mekong Delta region of Vietnam. A wide range of vaccines are currently administered to flocks, but is not based on empirical knowledge on pathogen circulation. We collected serum samples and vaccination data from a random sample of 267 small-scale native chicken flocks in Dong Thap to determine serological profiles by ELISA against 8 pathogens: Avian Influenza (AI), Chicken Anaemia virus (CAV), Infectious Bursal Disease (IBD) virus, Infectious Bronchitis virus (IBV), Newcastle Disease virus (NDV), O. rhinotracheale (ORT), P. multocida (PM) and M. gallisepticum (MG). The …

The prevalence of Non-typhoidal Salmonella (NTS) and extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) producing bacteria was assessed in samples of imported prawn and shrimp obtained from retail markets in Japan. The overall prevalence of NTS and ESBL producing bacteria was 4%, and 14%, respectively. We identified 4 NTS isolates, including S. enterica subspecies salamae, and 3 serovars of S. enterica subspecies enterica, including Weltevreden, Abony, and Stanley. ESBL producing bacteria were isolated from 14 of 100 samples, thirteen of which harbored Stenotrophomonas maltophilia and that harbored Chryseobacterium indologenes. Among the S. maltophilia-positive samples, six had been imported from India, five samples came from …
