Characterization Of High Cycle Fatigue And Laser-Aided Machining And Polishing Of Additively Manufactured Materials, Mohammad Masud Parvez
Characterization Of High Cycle Fatigue And Laser-Aided Machining And Polishing Of Additively Manufactured Materials, Mohammad Masud Parvez
Doctoral Dissertations
“Additive manufacturing (AM) and laser-aided machining and polishing (LAMP) of materials are emerging manufacturing processes both for research and industrial sectors. The AM process can manufacture near-net-shape parts with complex geometries. Meanwhile, the LAMP process integrated with an AM system offers a high processing rate, minimum heat-affected zone, and easily adjustable process parameters during machining and polishing. In mechanical properties characterization of AM metals and alloys, fatigue is a vitally important test method to understand the behavior of materials in cycling loading and unloading circumstances since most mechanical failures of structures are due to fatigue. To characterize AM metal fatigue …
Determining Thermal Properties Via Parameter Estimation Of A One-Dimensional, Analytical Model, Lauren B. Tomanek
Determining Thermal Properties Via Parameter Estimation Of A One-Dimensional, Analytical Model, Lauren B. Tomanek
Doctoral Dissertations
“In thermal applications, thermal conductivity is used to predict how well a material conducts heat. The accuracy of the magnitude of the thermal conductivity becomes increasingly essential to optimize part geometry. Thermal conductivity can vary significantly from the nominal value due to post-processing. The ASTM standards available to measure thermal conductivity are challenging to reproduce because of the insulated and prescribed temperature boundary conditions that are needed. The research introduces two new methods for estimating thermal conductivity that deliver the same accuracy as the existing ASTM standards and are easier to implement. The methods account for losses in the heating …

Advances In Control Of Uncertain Dynamical Systems With Optimal And Adaptive Approaches, Meryem Deniz
Doctoral Dissertations
"This research starts with designing optimal control for uncertain systems, adding the adaptive control input to suppress the uncertainty. It then follows with designing the optimal control for state constraint, designing the optimal nonlinear reference model, designing adaptive control to handle state constraint and uncertainty. Finally, it designs the finite-time controller for uncertain multiagent systems.
It is well known that the design of the control algorithm for an uncertain dynamical system is not trivial. Motivated by this standpoint, this study focuses on optimal and adaptive control approaches with stability and performance guarantees for uncertain sole and multiagent dynamical systems. From …
Development Of An Interactive Robot For Overground Physical Human-Robot Interaction, Sambad Regmi
Development Of An Interactive Robot For Overground Physical Human-Robot Interaction, Sambad Regmi
Doctoral Dissertations
"The overground interactive robots are potentially beneficial for humans in various areas, such as overground rehabilitation therapies and robotic interactive assistance. However, it is unclear what the expectations and challenges are for a robot to be physically interactive with a human during overground tasks, such as a robot helping an older adult walk. To develop such a robot, one must first build a clear understanding of how the human motor intent is communicated when interacting with another agent. Specifically, how do humans understand the leader’s intention when being led?
Based on previous works, we hypothesized that humans modulate their arm …

Sustainable Face Milling Of Inconel 718 Using Mql And Nanofluids Mql With Vegetable Oil As Base Fluid, Theodore Obumselu Nwoguh
Doctoral Dissertations
"Extreme heat and friction are generated in machining difficult-to-cut metals used in aerospace and nuclear industries leading to poor machinability (high cutting forces, rapid tool wear, shorter tool life, and poor surface integrity). Conventional flood coolant (CEC) used in industry is environmentally unfriendly, hazardous to operators, and unsustainable. These problems motivated this research, which can be mitigated with the use of effective biodegradable cutting fluids, appropriate cutting conditions, and lubrication/cooling strategies. This research provides a sustainable and environmentally friendly replacement to CEC. Firstly, the research characterized three vegetable oils (High Oleic Soybean Oil (HOSO), Low Oleic Soybean Oil (LOSO), and …

Processing And Characterization Of Tini-Based Alloys Fabricated By Laser Aided Manufacturing, Yitao Chen
Doctoral Dissertations
"Laser powder-based directed energy deposition (DED) is a major laser aided additive manufacturing (AM) process for metals. It applies laser energy to deposit metal powders to form 3D metal parts. Apart from manufacturing traditional alloys, DED can also be used to develop advanced alloys with the novel idea of elemental powder mixture feedstock. TiNi-based alloy is a type of shape memory alloy (SMA), a smart material with unique shape memory effects. Using laser powder DED to synthesize TiNi-based SMAs from elemental powder mixture can create more possibilities in new compositions and properties. It can also overcome the limitations of conventional …
Mobility Analysis And Topology Synthesis Of Compliant Mechanism Using Compliance Number And Pseudo-Rigid-Body Model (Prbm), Pratheek Bagivalu Prasanna
Mobility Analysis And Topology Synthesis Of Compliant Mechanism Using Compliance Number And Pseudo-Rigid-Body Model (Prbm), Pratheek Bagivalu Prasanna
Doctoral Dissertations
"Establishing and understanding the kinematic properties of a compliant mechanism has been a relatively recent endeavor and has proved to be a challenging task. A concept of compliance number was offered earlier; the development of terminologies was emphasized that aided in its determination. It also hypothesized that the compliance number (C) and stored strain energy, or mode shapes, are strongly correlated. This compliance number (C) concept is revisited, and a more lucid interpretation of its significance is provided. A fundamental understanding of the concept of deformation mode shapes in compliant mechanisms is formalized using two distinct categories: (i) segmental and …

Modeling Nonlinear Dynamic Systems Using Bss-Anova Gaussian Process, Kyle Matthew Hayes
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Nonlinear dynamic systems are some of the most common variety of systems encountered in the sciences, but are the potentially more onerous to model through system identification than static systems due to their added complexity, sensitivity to initial conditions, and the potential application of new dynamic and nonlinear behavior through any time dependent forcing functions. The BSS-ANOVA Gaussian Process is a Machine Learning method for dynamic system ID that possesses several attributes that make it a natural candidate for this variety of problem. BSS-ANOVA is fully Bayesian, works best for continuous tabular datasets, and fast training and inference times and …

Abstract
Comparison of Maintenance Cost of Medium and Heavy-Duty Alternative Fuel and Diesel Vehicles
Isaac Boyce
This study was conducted to provide an in-depth analysis of the differences in maintenance cost with the use of alternative fuel and diesel in medium (MD) and heavy-duty (HD) vehicles. With the push toward lower emissions from transportation vehicles for a cleaner future, the United States of America (US) has incentivized the conversion from the use of conventional fossil fuel, diesel, to lower carbon alternatives. With the increased potential for the use of alternative fuels, an investigation is warranted to understand the differences. This …
A Study Of Reduced Activation Ferritic Martensitic Metal Core Wire For Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing, Alexander L. Reichenbach
A Study Of Reduced Activation Ferritic Martensitic Metal Core Wire For Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing, Alexander L. Reichenbach
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
This study seeks to determine the technical feasibility of fabricating reduced activation ferritic martensitic (RAFM) steel parts, using a wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) process. The WAAM process, manufactures a part by depositing layers of metal onto a substrate to build a large scale near net shape part. RAFM alloy steels are next generation steels designed to resist radiation effects in the radiation intense working environments, such as nuclear reactors. To achieve this, process development and testing to design the WAAM production process with the custom RAFM filler wire was carried out. Several welding waveform modes were tested, and it …
Cfd And Heat Transfer Analysis Of Rocket Cooling Techniques On An Aerospike Nozzle, Geoffrey Sullivan
Cfd And Heat Transfer Analysis Of Rocket Cooling Techniques On An Aerospike Nozzle, Geoffrey Sullivan
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
In recent years the development of rocket engines has been mainly focused on improving the engine cycle and creating new fuels. Rocket nozzle design has not been changed since the late 1960s. Recent needs for reliable and reusable rockets, as well as advancements in additive manufacturing, have brought new interest into the aerospike nozzle concept. This nozzle is a type of altitude adjusting nozzle that is up to 90% more efficient than bell nozzles at low altitudes and spends up to 30% less fuel. Since the nozzle body is submerged in the hot exhaust gasses it is difficult to keep …

A Physics-Based Model For Frost Buildup Under Turbulent Flow Using Direct Numerical Simulations, Nadim Zgheib, N. Farzaneh, S. Balachandar, S. A. Sherif
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications
We present a new model for frost buildup under turbulent (and laminar) flow using direct numerical simulations. The physical model consists of two layers, the air and the frost. The air layer is fully resolved and consists of solving for the velocity, temperature, and vapor mass fraction fields. The frost layer thickness is resolved using conservation of mass and energy. Both phases are dynamically coupled using the immersed boundary method. Three-dimensional simulations are conducted in an open-channel configuration. A number of challenges need to be overcome to make these simulations feasible. First, to enforce far-field conditions of zero …

Particles of AISI 304L stainless steel powder were spheroidized by the induction plasma spheroidization process (TekSphero-15 spheroidization system) to assess the effects of the spheroidization process on powder and part properties. The morphology of both as-received and spheroidized powders was characterized by measuring particle size and shape distribution. The chemistry of powders was studied using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy for evaluation of composing elements, and the powder’s microstructure was assessed by X-ray diffraction for phase identification and by electron backscattered diffraction patterns for crystallography characterization. The Revolution Powder Analyzer was used to quantify powder flowability. The mechanical properties …

Tidal Current Turbine Blade Optimisation With Improved Blade Element Momentum Theory And A Non-Dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm, Eng Jet Yeo, David Kennedy, Fergal O'Rourke
Articles
Tidal current energy has the advantage of predictability over most of the other renewable energy resources. However, due to the harsh operating environment and complicated site conditions, developments in this domain have been gradual. Paramount to these points is device design and optimisation of hydrodynamic performance. Recent developments in the correction models of BEM theory have further improved the accuracy of the prediction model. Using an improved blade element momentum theory model that is capable of accurately capturing the downwash angle and combining it with a well-developed and reliable non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm model, an effective and efficient tidal current …

A General Coupling Methodology For Unsteady Aerostructural Optimization With Analytic Derivatives, Taylor Mcdonnell, Adam Cardoza, Denis-Gabriel Caprace, Andrew Ning
Faculty Publications
Multidisciplinary design optimization offers a comprehensive approach for designing complex aerostructural systems such as wind turbines. Gradient-based multidisciplinary design optimization can be used to optimize complex systems using large numbers of design variables. However, the convergence of gradient-based optimization methods to an optimal solution is highly dependent on the accuracy of the provided derivatives. In this paper, we propose a general method for creating unsteady coupled systems for steady-state, eigenvalue, and time-domain analyses. We then describe how highly accurate derivatives may be obtained from these analyses using a combination of automatic differentiation and analytic methods (including the unsteady adjoint). Finally, …

Études primaires
Vehicles falling off two-post above-ground (2PAG) lifts is a fairly frequent occurrence. As only limited knowledge is available about the determinants influencing the stability of lifting vehicles with a 2PAG lift, two experimental designs were carried out in order to have quantitative data. This paper addresses support pad slippage as a result of external forces being exerted on a vehicle. The experimental design is based on the consultation of the key players that identify the main issues related to the support pads. The controlled factors chosen in this experimental design were lift support pad type and position, smear on pads, …

Development Of Stiffness Sensing And Adaptive Grasping With Soft Pneumatic Grippers, Chaiwuth Sithiwichankit
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
This study presents a framework for stiffness sensing and adaptive grasping using soft pneumatic grippers (SPGs). The motivation was to imitate the capabilities of human hands. The challenge was the compliance of soft pneumatic actuators (SPAs). The study associated the behaviors of grasped objects with those on SPAs, introduced a new concept of SPA modeling, and proposed a method for stiffness sensing through SPG pincer grasping. Compression testing was conducted for validation. A technique for forecasting deformation and force on grasped objects based on their stiffness was established, and a control law was elaborated. The presented technique and control architecture …
