Effect Of Variation Of Sic Mass Fraction On Mechanical Properties Of Al-Sic Composite Using Stir Casting Method, Sumarji Sumarji, Naufal Fardio Albajili, Mahros Darsin, Rahma Rei Sakura, Andi Sanata
Journal of Mechanical Engineering Science and Technology (JMEST)
Al-SiC is a composite composed of AA6061 as a matrix and SiC as a reinforcement particle. The variation of mass added will affect the mechanical properties of the composite because Al-SiC is hardenable, which means that its mechanical properties can be improved by adding the reinforcement component. However, an excessive portion of SiC leads to a decrease in mechanical properties. The purpose of this study was to find the optimal composition of the addition of SiC into the aluminium matrix to gain maximum tensile strength and hardness. The mass fraction variation that would be used in this composite was the …

Run-To-Run Control Via Constrained Optimization Of A Mechanical Serial-Sectioning System, Damian L. Gallegos-Patterson
Mechanical Engineering ETDs
This thesis develops a methodology for run-to-run (R2R) control of a mechanical serial sectioning (mss) system for microstructural investigations. mss is a destructive material characterization process which repeatedly removes a thin layer of material and images the exposed surface. The images are then used to gain insight into the internal structure and arrangement of a material and are often used to generate a 3-dimensional (3D) reconstruction of the sample. Currently, an experienced human operator selects the parameters for mss to achieve the desired per slice removal rate. The proposed R2R control methodology automates this process while improving the precision and …

Employing Boundary Element Approach With Genetic Algorithm To Increase Travel Range Of Repulsive Actuators, Yu Tian, Ronald N. Miles, Shahrzad Towfighian
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Scholarship
The design of repulsive electrostatic actuators having enlarged travel range is achieved by combining the boundary element approach and a genetic algorithm. The boundary element method enables calculating the electrostatic forces without time consuming finite element simulations. Once a static equation that uses a model of effective lumped mass solves the travel ranges, the GA maximizes travel ranges by optimizing the dimensional parameters. The effectiveness of the scheme is demonstrated with extensive experimental results showing the travel ranges of a micro out-of-plane actuator are increased by up to 190%. The developed platform can improve the signal-to-noise ratios and the performance …

Thermal Analysis Of The Temperature Gradient Across Pintle Injector Face, Zoe Brand
Discovery Day - Prescott
Proper analysis of the temperature gradient across the pintle injector face is a complicated surface to acquire a reading from. Complications arise from the extreme temperatures seen on the combustion side mixed with the ambient temperatures seen on the fuel side of the injector. The orientation of temperature sensor placement is critical to mitigate hot spots and not disrupt the thermal flow through the injector face. The installment of the temperature sensors is also a critical issue since a new medium would need to be added to keep the sensor in place. The goal of this research is to figure …

Effects Of Equivalence Ratio During Shutdown Of A Rocket Engine On Hardware Longevity, Benjamin Black
Discovery Day - Prescott
During the shutdown or purge period after firing of a rocket engine it is critical to understand what equivalence ratios are desirable and implement a shutdown sequence so that the hardware is subjected to the lowest thermal and mechanical loading. Furthermore, it is essential that hazards to the test technicians caused by this method be minimized. The initial study was conducted into combustion mechanics, to understand how the reactants would ideally behave at varying equivalence ratios and in both pre-mixed and diffusion flame combustion. Using this foundation an analytical model for a Propane-Oxygen flame was created and tested using a …

Lattice vibrational frequencies are related to many important materials properties such as thermal and electrical conductivity as well as superconductivity. However, computational calculation of vibrational frequencies using density functional theory methods is computationally too demanding for large number of samples in materials screening. Here we propose a deep graph neural network based algorithm for predicting crystal vibrational frequencies from crystal structures. Our algorithm addresses the variable dimension of vibrational frequency spectrum using the zero padding scheme. Benchmark studies on two data sets with 15,000 mixed-structure and 35,552 rhombohedra samples show that the aggregated R2 scores of the prediction reach …

Impact Of Ultrathin Coating Layer On Lithium-Ion Intercalation Into Particles For Lithium-Ion Batteries, Yufang He, Hiep Pham, Xinhua Liang, Jonghyun Park
Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Ultrathin film coatings on battery materials via atomic layer deposition (ALD) have been demonstrated as an efficient technology for battery performance enhancement. However, the fundamental understanding on lithium intercalation into active materials through the interface between the coating and active materials is unclear, which makes it difficult to optimize ALD coating strategies. Further, like most active materials, a coating layer can undergo volume change during the intercalation process, which can produce detrimental structural changes and mechanical failure of the layer. In this work, first-principles calculations are conducted to reveal the behavior of a coating layer on an active material particle …

Use Of Power-To-Gas Technology With An Excess Of Electricity In The Network, N A. Abdivakhidova
Technical science and innovation
Electricity-to-gas conversion is a key area of interest for decarbonizing and increasing the flexibility of energy systems, as it can both absorb renewable electricity during periods of excess supply and provide backup energy during periods of excess demand. By combining the power-to-gas conversion with the natural gas network, the inherent flexibility of the line package can be exploited and some of the power variability can be transferred to the gas network. Also, as long as the gas injected into the gas grid is low-carbon, such as hydrogen from renewables to gas, then the overall greenhouse gas emissions from the gas …

Expanded-Range Venturi Flow Meter: Development And Testing Of A 3d-Printed Flow Meter And Solid-State Valve Concept, Joseph M. Pomo
Mechanical Engineering ETDs
In this thesis, I document the design, testing and performance of a novel Expanded-Range Venturi Flow Meter (ERVFM) concept. The ERVFM combines two, parallel-configured Venturi Flow Meters (VFM) with a Solid-State Selector Valve (SSSV). The goal was to create a reliable, high-turndown ratio flow meter which directs the fluid to either Venturi tube using the inherent pressure drop of the SSSV, and without moving parts. I constructed a pumped-fluid loop test-setup and quantified the ERVFM’s performance through pressure loss and mass flow rate measurements. In addition, I used python to develop models to assist in prototype design and data-processing. My …

The octopus couples controllable adhesives with intricately embedded sensing, processing, and control to manipulate underwater objects. Current synthetic adhesive–based manipulators are typically manually operated without sensing or control and can be slow to activate and release adhesion, which limits system-level manipulation. Here, we couple switchable, octopus-inspired adhesives with embedded sensing, processing, and control for robust underwater manipulation. Adhesion strength is switched over 450× from the ON to OFF state in <50 ms over many cycles with an actively controlled membrane. Systematic design of adhesive geometry enables adherence to nonideal surfaces with low preload and independent control of adhesive strength and adhesive toughness for strong and reliable attachment and easy release. Our bio-inspired nervous system detects objects and autonomously triggers the switchable adhesives. This is implemented into a wearable glove where an array of adhesives and sensors creates a biomimetic adhesive skin to manipulate diverse underwater objects.

This article presents a new approach for the efficient calculation of sensitivities in radiation dose estimates, subject to imprecisely known nuclear material cross-section data. The method is a combined application of adjoint-based models to perform, simultaneously, both the sensitivity calculation together with optimal adaptive mesh refinement. Adjoint-based sensitivity methods are known for their efficiency since they enable sensitivities of all parameters to be formed through only two solutions to the problem. However, the efficient solutions can also be obtained by their computation on optimal meshes, here guided by goal-based adjoint approaches. It is shown that both mesh adaptivity and sensitivity …

The goal of this study is to investigate the causes of osteoporosis-related skeletal fragility in postmenopausal women. We hypothesize that bone fragility in these individuals is largely due to mineral, and/or intrinsic material properties in the osteocyte lacunar/peri-lacunar regions of bone tissue. Innovative measurements with nanoscale resolution, including scanning electron microscope (SEM), an atomic force microscope that is integrated with infrared spectroscopy (AFM-IR), and nanoindentation, were used to characterize osteocyte lacunar and peri-lacunar properties in bone biopsies from fracturing (Cases) and matched (Age, BMD), non-fracturing (Controls) postmenopausal healthy women. In the peri-lacunar space, the nanoindentation results show that the modulus …
