Investigation Of Topologically Protected Wave Propagation Near Dirac-Like Cones In Acoustic Metamaterials, Md Arif Iqbal Khan
Investigation Of Topologically Protected Wave Propagation Near Dirac-Like Cones In Acoustic Metamaterials, Md Arif Iqbal Khan
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
This study presents a novel approach to investigate an exceptionally rare acoustic phenomenon – topologically protected wave propagation (TPWP) within a solid-solid domain. While previous research has attempted to unravel the physics behind this phenomenon, most efforts have been grounded in the framework of condensed matter physics and quantum mechanics often requiring complex geometries to realize TPWP in solid-fluid interactions. In contrast, this thesis introduces a geometric tuning method that enables the achievement of TPWP with simpler geometric configurations within a solid-solid domain. Rather than explaining by the quantum trio - quantum anomalous hall effect, quantum valley hall effect, and …
Energy And Empowerment In The High Arctic, Alyssa Pantaleo
Energy And Empowerment In The High Arctic, Alyssa Pantaleo
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
National governments continue to depend on fossil fuels for electricity and heat generation in Arctic communities. This dependence threatens the economic, environmental, and cultural sustainability of Arctic communities and subjects them to future volatility and uncertainty. In Greenland, the centralized government structure creates additional challenges for northern communities by limiting the inclusion of local knowledge and priorities in favor of national, standardized solutions. This research identifies pathways towards fossil fuel reduction in northern Greenlandic communities via 1.) analyzing the potential for renewable energy inclusion in grid-scale or residential energy generation and 2.) analysis of the potential for energy reduction in …

A Decision-Making Approach To Reduce The Risk Of Measurement Uncertainty For Product Size, Mostafa Awadalla Sedeek, Fatma Abdallah Elerian, Ossama Badie Abouelatta, Mona. A. Aboueleaz
Mansoura Engineering Journal
The measurement uncertainty has a significant impact on quality control processes. This is particularly true of standards that are assessed to determine if a product is compliant. This ambiguity introduces two potential risks of decision-making: accepting a non-conventional product (the consumer's risk) or rejecting a conventional product (the producer's risk). This investigation explores the potential for false decisions caused by measurement errors in product assessments. By studying data near the control limits, a greater understanding of the manufacturing process is intended to facilitate informed decision-making, and guide the implementation of effective quality control methods. The investigation highlights the importance of …

Minimizing The Production Cost Of The Cam-Follower Profile Using Shape Optimization Techniques, Khaled Ahmed, Magdy Samuel, Rania Mostafa
Mansoura Engineering Journal
The study of shape optimization techniques in structural products helps in reducing mechanical stresses and vibrations in related mechanical elements, such as cam follower mechanisms. This, in turn, has a positive impact on cost savings in the manufacturing process and enhances production quality and reliability. The point of view in this research depends on the idea of minimizing the total production cost while ensuring good functional performance of the cam profile during the shape-manufacturing optimization problem-solving process. The investigation of the impact of changing the motion type of a cam, such as Uniform Velocity Motion (UVM) and Simple Harmonic Motion …
Parametrization Of Fluid Models For Electrical Breakdown Of Nitrogen At Atmospheric Pressure, Shirshak K. Dhali
Parametrization Of Fluid Models For Electrical Breakdown Of Nitrogen At Atmospheric Pressure, Shirshak K. Dhali
Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
In the transient phase of an atmospheric pressure discharge, the avalanche turns into a streamer discharge with time. Hydrodynamic fluid models are frequently used to describe the formation and propagation of streamers, where charge particle transport is dominated by the creation of space charge. The required electron transport data and rate coefficients for the fluid model are parameterized using the local mean energy approximation (LMEA) and the local field approximation (LFA). In atmospheric pressure applications, the excited species produced in the electrical discharge determine the subsequent conversion chemistry. We performed the fluid model simulation of streamers in nitrogen gas at …

As spinal fusion surgery continues to transition to less invasive techniques, there remains an unmet need for ever smaller and more complex interbody cages to meet the unique needs of this difficult surgery. This work focuses on the hypothesis that this need can be met using the inherent advantages of compliant mechanisms in a way no previous device has. Deployable Euler Spiral Connectors optimized using a gradient based optimization algorithm were used as the foundation for a device that can stow to a very small size for device insertion then bilaterally deploy to a substantially larger device footprint. Additionally, a …

Radiative surface properties play a critical role in the analysis, design, and optimization of thermal systems. Geometry has a strong influence on the emission and absorption characteristics of a surface. Modification of radiative surface properties may be achieved by using engineered surfaces or cavities by capitalizing on the cavity effect. A model for the apparent emissivity of an arbitrarily shaped cavity with spectrally and directionally dependent radiative surface properties is presented in this work. This model is verified through comparison with published models of the apparent radiative properties of cylindrical cavities. The merit of this model is demonstrated by obtaining …

Linear Actuator Using Electromagnetic Brake For Damping Modulation In Physical Human-Robot Interaction, Zahid Ullah
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Improving the transparency of high-transmission-ratio linear actuators is essential for enhancing the safety and performance of high-force robotic systems that engage in physical contact with humans in unstructured environments. However, achieving this goal presents significant challenges. A proposed solution for active body weight support systems involves a linear actuator design, combining a high-force unit with an agile, highly back-drivable unit, using an electrorheological-fluid brake. This dissertation introduces an approach that utilizes an electromagnetic (EM) brake with a reduced rotor inertia to address these challenges. The EM brake's increased torque capacity allows for integration with a low-gear-ratio linear transmission. The mini …

Études primaires
Earplugs are used in various critical industrial sectors, such as construction, aviation, military and defense, transportation, and healthcare. However, they present inherent drawbacks, notably discomfort that can lead to inconsistent and incorrect use, thereby leaving a significant proportion of workers vulnerable to irreversible hearing damage, ranging from tinnitus to deafness. This discomfort is closely linked to a physical parameter known as static mechanical pressure (SMP), representing the pressure exerted by earplugs on the earcanal walls. Determining the SMP is crucial for developing earplugs that prioritize comfort. However, experimental studies in this area are scarce and there is no experimental set-up …

Extrusion-Based Additive Manufacturing Of Magnetic Heat Exchange Structures For Caloric Applications, Vaibhav Sharma
Theses and Dissertations
Currently, the commercial building sector accounts for 18% of total U.S. end-use energy consumption, of which almost a third was from on-site combustion of fossil fuels for space and water heating. Magnetic heat pumping (MHP) technology is an energy-efficient, sustainable, environmentally-friendly alternative to conventional vapor-compression cooling technology. Several MHP designs today are predicted to be highly energy efficient, on condition that suitable working materials can be developed. This materials challenge has proven to be daunting due to issues associated with intricate synthesis/post-processing protocols and complications related to shaping the mostly brittle magnetocaloric alloys into thin-walled channeled regenerator structures to facilitate …

Nanomagnetic devices have emerged as a promising alternative to conventional complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) devices due to their low energy dissipation and inherent non-volatility. However, the widespread adoption of these devices requires high-density, high-speed, reliable, scalable, and energy-efficient technologies. This thesis investigates the use of nanomagnetic memory devices as both conventional Boolean memory and multistate memory for hardware AI applications.
Magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) are nanomagnetic memory devices that can be switched reliably and energy-efficiently using stress-mediated switching. However, realistic material inhomogeneity and scalability pose challenges for stress-mediated switching of MTJs scaled to lateral dimensions below 50 nm. We demonstrate that …

In turn, a number of factors affect the decrease in traffic speed: the presence of slow-moving vehicles in the stream; pedestrians crossing the road irregularly; increase in traffic flow, etc. The issues of public transportation depend on many factors, each of which requires a separate approach and a complex solution. In large cities around the world, the quality indicators of public transport services, including the issues of …

Programming A Numerical Model Of Spherical Propagation Of Electric Discharge In Liquid, Mukhiddin Kushshaevich Khudjaev
Technical science and innovation
The subject of research is the determination of the hydrodynamic parameters of a liquid in the process of an electric discharge in a liquid. A numerical algorithm was constructed and a program was drawn up to determine the hydrodynamic parameters of a liquid in the process of an electric discharge in a liquid for a spherical problem. In the numerical solution of the problem, a uniform rectangular grid was used. Some results of computational experiments are presented.
