Data-Driven Mulitiscale Modeling Of Electrochemical Transport, Non-Linear Electrical Contact, And Additive Manufacturing Processes, Emmanuel Olugbade

Doctoral Dissertations

The growing demand for high-efficiency energy systems and advanced manufacturing technologies requires predictive frameworks that link atomic-scale physics with engineering-scale performance. This dissertation develops a unified multiscale modeling approach that integrates molecular dynamics, density functional theory, finite-element analysis, and machine learning to connect structure, transport, and performance across materials and processes. Depending on the interactions involved, the framework employs loose coupling for parameter transfer, tight coupling for two-way feedback, and hybrid coupling where machine-learning surrogates accelerate high-fidelity simulations while retaining physical interpretability. In electrochemical systems, an XGBoost-enhanced single-particle model reproduces P2D-level electrolyte potential dynamics at roughly one-hundredth the computational cost, …

Momentum Transport In Heterogeneous Forest Canopies, Hawwa Kadum, Ryan Scott, Sarah E. Smith, Marc Calaf, Raul Bayoan Cal

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

This study investigates the impact of spatial heterogeneity on momentum transport within forest canopies through wind tunnel experiments using 1:200 scale forest models. The models, crafted from 10 Pores Per Inch reticulated foam, emulate a leaf area index of 5.3 and include alternating patches and gaps of various sizes. Statistical results of the mean velocity profiles and velocity standard deviations show that the canopies develop a mixing layer. By employing lacunarity analysis to quantify spatial heterogeneity, we establish that the heterogeneity scale effectively represents variations in canopy height. The success of the lacunarity analysis as a metric is particularly noteworthy, …

Rheology Of Alumina Suspensions Subjected To Alternating Current Electric Fields For Freeze-Casting, Sivakumar Chithamallu, Ruksana Baby, Jacob L. Jones, Dipankar Ghosh

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications

Alternating current (AC) electric field can extrinsically tune freeze‐cast microstructure, originating from field‐induced increase in viscosity of ceramic suspensions. However, the changes that occur in a ceramic suspension and rheological behavior, ultimately affecting freeze‐cast microstructure, are not well understood. Moreover, the effects of AC electrokinetic forces and temperature on viscosity need to be decoupled. The viscosity and temperature of ceramic suspensions subjected to AC field and direct heating were measured, revealing that the increase in viscosity is due to AC dielectrophoretic forces rather than field‐induced heating of suspension. The shear thinning behavior of suspensions characterized using a power‐law model reveals …
