Networked Microgrid Optimization And Energy Management, Robert S. Jane Jan 2019

Networked Microgrid Optimization And Energy Management, Robert S. Jane

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Military vehicles possess attributes consistent with a microgrid, containing electrical energy generation, storage, government furnished equipment (GFE), and the ability to share these capabilities via interconnection. Many military vehicles have significant energy storage capacity to satisfy silent watch requirements, making them particularly well-suited to share their energy storage capabilities with stationary microgrids for more efficient energy management. Further, the energy generation capacity and the fuel consumption rate of the vehicles are comparable to standard diesel generators, for certain scenarios, the use of the vehicles could result in more efficient operation. Energy management of a microgrid is an open area of …

Acoustic Localization Techniques For Application In Near-Shore Arctic Environments, Miles B. Penhale Jan 2019

Acoustic Localization Techniques For Application In Near-Shore Arctic Environments, Miles B. Penhale

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

The Arctic environment has undergone significant change in recent years. Multi-year ice is no longer prevalent in the Arctic. Instead, Arctic ice melts during summer months and re-freezes each winter. First-year ice, in comparison to multi-year ice, is different in terms of its acoustic properties. Therefore, acoustic propagation models of the Arctic may no longer be valid. The open water in the Arctic for longer time periods during the year invites anthropogenic traffic such as civilian tourism, industrial shipping, natural resource exploration, and military exercises. It is important to understand sound propagation in the first-year ice environment, especially in near-shore …

Non-Marginal Decisions: A Novel Bayesian Multiple Testing Procedure, Noirrit Kiran Chandra, Sourabh Bhattacharya Jan 2019

Non-Marginal Decisions: A Novel Bayesian Multiple Testing Procedure, Noirrit Kiran Chandra, Sourabh Bhattacharya

Journal Articles

In this paper, we consider the problem of multiple testing where the hypotheses are dependent. In most of the existing literature, either Bayesian or non-Bayesian, the decision rules mainly focus on the validity of the test procedure rather than actually utilizing the dependency to increase efficiency. Moreover, the decisions regarding different hypotheses are marginal in the sense that they do not depend upon each other directly. However, in realistic situations, the hypotheses are usually dependent, and hence it is desirable that the decisions regarding the dependent hypotheses are taken jointly. In this article, we develop a novel Bayesian multiple testing …

A Hybrid Droplet Vaporization-Chemical Surrogate Approach For Emulating Vaporization, Physical Properties, And Chemical Combustion Behavior Of Multicomponent Fuels, Alanna Y. Cooney, Simcha L. Singer

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

The complex nature of multicomponent aviation fuels presents a daunting task for accurately simulating combustion behavior without incurring impractical computational costs. To reduce computation time, chemical fuel surrogates comprised of only a few species are used to emulate the combustion of complex pre-vaporized fuels. These surrogates are often unable to match the vaporization behavior and physical properties of the real fuel and fail to capture the effect of preferential vaporization on combustion behavior. Therefore, a computationally efficient, hybrid droplet vaporization-chemical surrogate approach has been developed which emulates both the physical and chemical properties of a multicomponent kerosene fuel. The droplet …

Active-Passive Dynamic Consensus Filters: Theory And Applications, John Daniel Peterson

Doctoral Dissertations

”This dissertation presents a new method for distributively sensing dynamic environments utilizing integral action based system theoretic distributed information fusion methods. Specifically, the main contribution is a new class of dynamic consensus filters, termed active-passive dynamic consensus filters, in which agents are considered to be active, if they are able to sense an exogenous quantity of interest and are considered to be passive, otherwise, where the objective is to drive the states of all agents to the convex hull spanned by the exogenous inputs sensed by active agents. Additionally, we generalize these results to allow agents to locally …

Light Touch Based Virtual Cane For Balance Assistance During Standing, Sindhu Reddy Alluri Jan 2019

Light Touch Based Virtual Cane For Balance Assistance During Standing, Sindhu Reddy Alluri

Masters Theses

"Can additional information about one's body kinematics provided through hands improve human balance? Light-Touch (LT) through hands helps improve balance in a wide range of populations, both healthy and impaired. The force is too small to provide any meaningful mechanical assistance -- rather, it is suggested that the additional sensory information through hands helps the body improve balance.

To investigate the potential for improving human balance through biofeedback through hands, we developed a Virtual Cane (VC) for balance assistance during standing. The VC mimics the physical cane's function of providing information about one's body in space. Balance experiments on 10 …

The Effect Of Cell Size And Surface Roughness On The Compressive Properties Of Abs Lattice Structures Fabricated By Fused Deposition Modeling, Leah Hope Mason

Masters Theses

"Postprocessing is an important step in many manufacturing methods, but it is especially important for additive manufacturing. Researchers looking to improve the surface roughness of acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) parts fabricated by fused deposition modeling (FDM) have determined that acetone smoothing not only achieves improved surface roughness but increases compressive strength as well. This could be very beneficial to lattice structures, which are known for already having an excellent strength to weight ratio. If the compressive strength of ABS lattice structures could be improved even further using acetone smoothing, it could expand the applications for plastic lattice structures and improve …

"Microwave curing technologies have many advantages over the traditional thermal curing methods for the manufacturing of fiber reinforced polymers, especially the processing speed and energy efficiency. Energy can be instantaneously transferred through applied electromagnetic fields and heat is generated based on dipolar rotational interactions. Microwave curing processes have been used for glass fiber composites but there are significant challenges associated with microwave curing of carbon fiber composites. Efficient heating may be difficult due to high dielectric loss associated with carbon fibers. Laminate quality will be highly dependent on the uniformity of the electromagnetic field in the material. In this work, …
