Fault Detection And Location In Renewable-Fed Distribution Systems Using Low Voltage Sensors, Bushra Farhat
All Theses
The penetration of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) into the Electric Power System (EPS) is increasing. These (DERs) are mostly inverter-based resources (IBRs) that are integrated into (EPS) at the distribution level. Therefore, it has become necessary to leverage the integration of (IBRs) for both commercial and residential distribution systems through the deployment of Microgrid (MG). However, existing distribution systems that use fuses for sensing and isolating faults are not equipped to handle protection of microgrids where fault currents are fed from multiple sources and can flow downstream or upstream. Bulk of the protection schemes proposed in literature are heavily dependent …

High-Power Power Conditioning Systems For Medium-Voltage Applications, Ahmed Rahouma Fares Rahouma
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this dissertation is to address the background, theoretical analyses, design methodologies, and evaluation techniques relevant to high-power power conditioning systems (PCSs) tailored for medium-voltage (MV) applications. Conventional PCSs, reliant on line-frequency transformers (LFTs), suffer from many problems including low power densities, inflexible designs, and scalability constraints. Employing multilevel converters (MLCs), particularly cascaded H-bridge topology, eliminates the need for these LFTs. A key focus lies in minimizing the number of cascaded building blocks by harnessing MV power switching modules. The dissertation makes two primary contributions: firstly, it offers a design methodology for MV-PCS, facilitating the selection of the …

This dissertation explores the pressing needs of modern bulk power system operation and control and delves into enhancements to EMS applications with minimal infrastructure development. The dissertation investigates three main EMS application enhancements. The transmission network topology processing (TNTP) is a foundational application of the EMS. A physics-based hierarchical transmission network topology processing (H-TNTP), including substation configuration identification, to improve efficiency and reliability is proposed. Secondly, a multi-level distributed linear state estimation (D-LSE) approach solely based on PMUs is proposed utilizing H-TNTP as the network modeling tool. The D-LSE can conduct linear state estimation (LSE) at either substation, area or …

Time-Domain Line Protection In Presence Of Renewables, Prabin Adhikari
All Dissertations
Inverter based resources (IBRs) are crucial in integrating renewable energy sources into the power grid. However, their unique fault characteristics, significantly different from synchronous generators (SGs), present several challenges for existing line protection schemes at both transmission and distribution levels. These schemes, reliant on distance and directional relays designed in phasor domain, are not well-suited for IBRs. Most published literature addressing this problem concentrates on altering the control design of inverters. However, this approach faces practical limitations. Inverter controls, often proprietary, are not readily accessible to utilities, rendering the control-based solutions impractical for widespread implementation.
To address this challenge, this …

Journal of Electrochemistry
Magnesium (Mg) is a promising alternative to lithium (Li) in solid-state batteries due to its abundance and high theoretical volumetric capacity. However, the sluggish Mg-ion conduction in the lattice of solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) is one of the key challenges that hamper the development of Mg-ion solid-state batteries. Though various Mg-ion SSEs have been reported in recent years, key insights are hard to be derived from a single literature report. Besides, the structure-performance relationships of Mg-ion SSEs need to be further unraveled to provide a more precise design guideline for SSEs. In this Viewpoints article, we analyze the structural characteristics of …

Sorbitol-Electrolyte-Additive Based Reversible Zinc Electrochemistry, Qiong Sun, Hai-Hui Du, Tian-Jiang Sun, Dian-Tao Li, Min Cheng, Jing Liang, Hai-Xia Li, Zhan-Liang Tao
Journal of Electrochemistry
The unstable zinc (Zn)/electrolyte interfaces formed by undesired dendrites and parasitic side reactions greatly hinder the development of aqueous zinc ion batteries. Herein, the hydroxy-rich sorbitol was used as an additive to reshape the solvation structure and modulate the interface chemistry. The strong interactions among sorbitol and both water molecules and Zn electrode can reduce the free water activity, optimize the solvation shell of water and Zn2+ ions, and regulate the formation of local water (H2O)-poor environment on the surface of Zn electrode, which effectively inhibit the decomposition of water molecules, and thus, achieve the thermodynamically stable …

Societal exergy analysis examines the flows of energy and exergy through societies, from primary (e.g. oil) to final (e.g. gasoline) to useful (e.g. propulsion) energy stages. By extending the study of energy to the useful stage, new insights into the under-represented role of energy in economic growth have been made. However, currently (a) country coverage is patchy and incomplete, (b) available data are based on varying methods and assumptions including efficiencies based on economic rather than engineering data, and (c) datasets are constructed using piecemeal computational approaches. To address these gaps, we construct a country-level primary-final-useful (CL-PFU) energy and exergy …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The power generation landscape evolves, with the increase of inverter-based resources (IBRs) such as solar photovoltaics and wind turbines, providing sustainable and clean energy sources. The shift towards IBRs mitigates climate change, creating considerable challenges to traditional power system protection due to their low fault current. Conventional protection schemes are designed around the internal dynamic of synchronous generators where they can supply an elevated fault current. This thesis explores a protection scheme designed to enhance the security of IBRs. The incremental characteristics of voltage and current coupled with the Permissive Overreaching Transfer Trip scheme (POTT) provide a remarkable ability to …

Wireless power beaming from space and energy harvesting were once stories of science fiction, until now. Wireless power transmission (WPT) is a field continually in development to provide energy in situations where energy transfer through wires is impractical or unfeasible. This engineering discipline abandons the use of wire technology for the energy transfer between the power source and a distant device. While various forms of WPT exist, our project focuses on transmission through means of radio frequency (RF), utilizing electromagnetic waves to power devices. Furthermore, WPT technology primarily assists in the elimination of a physical connection between devices, and it …
