Electric vehicles (EVs) and rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) systems are increasingly being integrated into residential settings, creating new opportunities for vehicle-to-grid (V2G) and vehicle-to-home (V2H) operations. In these systems, the EV battery functions as a controllable energy storage unit that can charge from the grid or PV and discharge energy to supply household load or export to the grid for a profit. By intelligently scheduling this bidirectional power exchange, households can reduce electricity costs and enhance PV utilization. The modeling of photovoltaic (PV) cells through equivalent circuits forms a central element in the analysis, simulation, and optimization of solar energy systems. Traditional approaches often depend on iterative numerical methods to solve the implicit current–voltage (I–V) equations. In contrast, the Lambert W function has emerged as an effective mathematical tool that enables closed-form or semi-analytical expressions for a wide range of PV models. This thesis presents the development of a genetic algorithm (GA) optimization framework for the design and component sizing of hybrid solar-hydrogen microgrids. The framework addresses a critical gap in research and existing commercial tools by unifying performance maximization and cost minimization objectives across both grid-tied and islanded configurations. Integrating solar photovoltaics, electrolyzers, hydrogen storage, fuel cells, and batteries, the GA employs adaptive weighting and dynamic boundary constraints to balance technical feasibility with economic efficiency. A model of a system of wireless power transfer (WPT) pads is developed, where each WPT pad is modeled as a node and the coupling between pads is modeled as graph edges. This modeling approach is generalized to admit primary, secondary, and booster coils, where power can flow among the pads and a pad can fill multiple roles. An excitation in one pad induces voltage and current in all neighboring pads, causing each pad to act as both a booster coil and either a transmitter or a receiver. ML techniques have great potential to assist in solving optimization problems within a shorter time frame and with less computational burden. AC optimal power flow (ACOPF), dynamic economic dispatch (D-ED), and security-constrained unit commitment (SCUC) are the three energy management optimization functions studied in this dissertation. This project proposes an optimization approach for day-ahead reactive power planning to ensure voltage security in transmission networks. The problem is formulated as a voltage-secure multi-period optimal reactive power dispatch (MP-ORPD) problem. The optimization approach searches for optimal set-points of dynamic and static reactive power (var) resources. Outer-rotor switched reluctance machines (SRMs) have drawn much attention as promising candidates for in-wheel direct-drive motors of future electric vehicles. This paper presents the optimal study of a verniertype axial-flux permanent-magnet (AFPM) machine, which has a high-polarity spoke-type PM rotor, a wound stator with a low number of coils, and a profiled stator. Both stators have profiled teeth to enhance the magnetic interaction between the rotor PM array and stator windings for torque production. Coreless axial-flux permanent-magnet (AFPM) machines may be attractive options for high-speed and high-power-density applications due to the elimination of core losses. In order to make full use of the advantages offered by these machines and avoid excessive eddy current losses in windings, advanced technologies for winding conductors need to be employed to suppress the eddy effect, such as the Litz wire and printed circuit board (PCB). The United States Air Force has implemented a dispersed air base strategy to enhance mission effectiveness for near-peer conflicts. Asset dispersal places many smaller bases across a wide geographic area, which increases resupply requirements and logistical complexity. Hybrid energy systems reduce resupply requirements through sustainable, off-grid energy production. Today the electrification of flight is more popular than ever, creating a wide array of concept aircraft and associated power system topologies. In order to gain insights into benefits of these varying architectures, this paper introduces the development of a framework for electric aircraft power system (EAPS) optimization. The proposed framework accepts inputs from a designer in the form of component parameters and desired flight mission characteristics. Remote and contingency operations, including military and disaster-relief activities, often require the use of temporary facilities powered by inefficient diesel generators that are expensive to operate and maintain. Site planners can reduce operating costs by increasing shelter insulation and augmenting generators with photovoltaic-battery hybrid energy systems, but they must select the optimal design configuration based on the region’s climate to meet the power demand at the lowest cost.
