A Performance And Visualization Study On Inlet Geometries Of A Cross-Flow Fan., Yoel Tanquero May 2017

A Performance And Visualization Study On Inlet Geometries Of A Cross-Flow Fan., Yoel Tanquero

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A study was conducted to characterize the flow-field in the suction region of different inlet geometries of a cross-flow fan. The characterization was accomplished by correlating the static performance curves measured for each fan-inlet configuration to the streamline plot obtained using a particle tracking velocimetry (PTV) measurement system at three constant flow rates (25, 40, and 55 CFM). The PTV measurement system used was developed by the author and uses helium bubbles as tracers, an LED light sheet, a slow motion camera, and a Matlab program. Four inlet geometry design variables were defined and independently studied to evaluate the effect …

Actuator Disk Theory For Compressible Flow, Htet Htet Nwe Oo May 2017

Actuator Disk Theory For Compressible Flow, Htet Htet Nwe Oo

Master's Theses

Because compressibility effects arise in real applications of propellers and turbines, the Actuator Disk Theory or Froude’s Momentum Theory was established for compressible, subsonic flow using the three laws of conservation and isentropic thermodynamics. The compressible Actuator Disk Theory was established for the unducted (bare) and ducted cases in which the disk was treated as the only assembly within the flow stream in the bare case and enclosed by a duct having a constant cross-sectional area equal to the disk area in the ducted case. The primary motivation of the current thesis was to predict the ideal performance of a …

Investigation Of Dynamic Store Separation Out Of A Weapons Bay Cavity Utilizing A Low Speed Wind Tunnel, Andrew D. Bower Mar 2017

Investigation Of Dynamic Store Separation Out Of A Weapons Bay Cavity Utilizing A Low Speed Wind Tunnel, Andrew D. Bower

Theses and Dissertations

Characterizing mission store trajectories as they separate from a weapons bay cavity is highly relevant to the Air Force mission. The flow around a weapons bay is unsteady. The unsteady flow can cause a mission store separation trajectory to be unpredictable, and such is the case for what some have termed a pitch bifurcation. Traditional wind tunnel testing is incapable of detecting a bifurcation because traditional wind tunnel testing records time-averaged data. In this study, an experimental testing system was developed and refined in order to support the time-accurate characterization of dynamic mission store separation events. A Motion Test Apparatus …

Time-Dependent Validation Of Finite Element Strain Distribution Of A Plastically-Deformed Plate Via Digital Image Correlation, Kevin R. Knapp Mar 2017

Time-Dependent Validation Of Finite Element Strain Distribution Of A Plastically-Deformed Plate Via Digital Image Correlation, Kevin R. Knapp

Theses and Dissertations

Generation of residual stress is an essential step in the generation of Goodman data via Air Force Research Laboratory's vibration-based fatigue test. Conventional Goodman data is constructed through uniaxial fatigue testing at a rate of 40 Hz, while the vibration-based testing excites stresses at 1,600 Hz in a stress state that is similar to those seen in gas turbine engine airfoils. A pre-strain procedure is conducted to form residual tensile stress, which serves as a steady stress when the specimen is subjected to fully-reversed vibration-based fatigue loads. This steady tensile stress is desired at the fatigue zone of the test …

Characteristics Of Hydrogel-Wetted Thin Films, James Owens Jan 2017

Characteristics Of Hydrogel-Wetted Thin Films, James Owens

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The meniscus region of a thin film is known to have high heat transfer properties due to high evaporation rates and activation of latent heat. The region known as the thin film meniscus (δfilm lt& 2 µm ) can account for more than half of the total heat transfer of a droplet or film. This study focuses on the potential elongation and curvature amplification of the thin film meniscus region by the implementation of a layer of high hydrogen bonding (hydrogel) film on which the liquid meniscus is built. Forced wetting via liquid propagation though this hydrogel layer in the …

Data-Driven Adaptive Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes K - Ω Models For Turbulent Flow-Field Simulations, Zhiyong Li Jan 2017

Data-Driven Adaptive Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes K - Ω Models For Turbulent Flow-Field Simulations, Zhiyong Li

Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering

The data-driven adaptive algorithms are explored as a means of increasing the accuracy of Reynolds-averaged turbulence models. This dissertation presents two new data-driven adaptive computational models for simulating turbulent flow, where partial-but-incomplete measurement data is available. These models automatically adjust (i.e., adapts) the closure coefficients of the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) k-ω turbulence equations to improve agreement between the simulated flow and a set of prescribed measurement data.

The first approach is the data-driven adaptive RANS k-ω (D-DARK) model. It is validated with three canonical flow geometries: pipe flow, the backward-facing step, and flow around an airfoil. For all 3 test …

This thesis focuses on the development of a flexible, physics-based life prediction approach for steels under complex conditions. Low alloy steels continue to be the materials of choice for large turbomachinery structures experiencing high temperatures for long durations. There has been significant advancement in the research of modern alloys; furthermore, these materials are continue to be utilized in boilers, heat exchanger tubes, and throttle valve bodies in both turbomachinery and pressure-vessel/piping applications. The material 2.25Cr-1Mo is studied in the present work. The resistance of this alloy to deformation and damage under creep and/or fatigue at elevated temperatures make it appropriate …

Combustion Of 1,3-Butadiene Behind Reflected Shocks, Joseph Lopez Jan 2017

Combustion Of 1,3-Butadiene Behind Reflected Shocks, Joseph Lopez

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The chemical kinetics of 1,3-butadiene (1,3-C4H6) are important because 1,3-butadiene is a major intermediate during the combustion of real fuels. However, there is only limited information on the chemical kinetics of 1,3-butadiene combustion, which has applications in several combustion schemes that are currently being developed, including spark-assisted homogeneous charge compression ignition and fuel reformate exhaust gas recirculation. In the present work, the ignition delay times of 1,3-butadiene mixtures has been investigated using pressure data. Oxidation of 1,3-butadiene/oxygen mixtures diluted in argon or nitrogen at equivalence ratios (Φ) of 0.3 behind reflected shock waves has been studied at temperatures ranging from …

Simultaneous Imaging Of The Diatomic Carbon And Methylidyne Species Radicals For The Quantification Of The Fuel To Air Ratio From Low To High Pressure Combustion, Jonathan Reyes Jan 2017

Simultaneous Imaging Of The Diatomic Carbon And Methylidyne Species Radicals For The Quantification Of The Fuel To Air Ratio From Low To High Pressure Combustion, Jonathan Reyes

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The radical intensity ratio of the diatomic carbon to methylidyne was characterized at initial pressures up to 10 bar using certified gasoline of 93% octane. This gasoline was selected due to its availability as a common fuel. The characterization of the radical intensity ratio of gasoline at elevated pressures enabled the creation of a calibration map of the equivalence ratio at engine relevant conditions. The proposed calibration map acts as a feedback loop for a combustor. It allows for the location of local rich and lean zones. The local information acquired can be used as an optimization parameter for injection …

Design And Modeling Of A Heat Exchanger For Porous Combustor Powered Steam Generators In Automotive Industry, Apratim Dasgupta

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A major challenge faced by automobile manufacturers is to achieve reduction of particulate emission to acceptable standards, as the emission standards become more and more stringent. One of the ecologically friendly options to reduce emissions is to develop external combustion in a steam engine as a replacement of the internal combustion engine. There are multiple factors, other than pollution that need to be considered for developing a substitute for Internal Combustion Engine, like specific power, throttle response, torque speed curve, fuel consumption and refueling infrastructure. External combustion in a steam engine seems to be a bright idea, for a cleaner …

Local Field Effects On Magnetic Suppression Of The Converging Richtmyer-Meshkov Instability, Vincent Wheatley, Wouter Mostert, D. M. Bond, Ravi Samtaney

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We examine how the suppression of the converging shockdriven Richtmyer-Meshkov instability by an applied magnetic field is dependent on the local magnetic field strength and orientation. In particular, we examine whether the extent of suppression can be reasonably predicted by a linear model for the planar case. This is done for cylindrically converging cases with a high perturbation wavenumber and two different initial magnetic field configurations.

A high-accuracy numerical study is conducted to examine the impact of flow-acoustic resonant interactions on the aerodynamic response of symmetric and cambered airfoils in the realistic transitional flow regimes with Rec=140,000 and M=0.0465 as well as the low Reynolds number flow regime with Rec=10,000 and M=0.2. The symmetric NACA-0012 and the cambered SD7003 airfoils are investigated at various angles of attack that have been found previously to include both the tone and no-tone producing regimes, with specific focus on the aerodynamic lift response. Additional simulations are conducted with a low-intensity synthetic turbulence introduced upstream of the airfoils in order to …

Turbulence Control In Wall Jets, Jonathan Latim Dec 2016

Turbulence Control In Wall Jets, Jonathan Latim

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

The turbulent boundary layer has been the focus of many studies over the last century or so due to its engineering significance. Recent studies have shown that the turbulent boundary layer encapsulates extremely energetic large-scale structures which play a much more significant role in its dynamics than has been previously thought. Further, these large scales amplitude and frequency modulate the finer scales of turbulence. This offers a path to control wall turbulence by controlling the large-scales of the flow. The focus of this thesis is to establish ways to manipulate the energy of the large-scale structures in a model turbulent …

Assessment Of Asymmetric Flight On Solar Uas, Eric Belfield Dec 2016

Assessment Of Asymmetric Flight On Solar Uas, Eric Belfield

Master's Theses

An investigation was conducted into the feasibility of using an unconventional flight technique, asymmetric flight, to improve overall efficiency of solar aircraft. In this study, asymmetric flight is defined as steady level flight in a non-wings-level state in- tended to improve solar incidence angle. By manipulating aircraft orientation through roll angle, solar energy collection is improved but aerodynamic efficiency is worsened due to the introduction of additional trim drag. A point performance model was devel- oped to investigate the trade-off between improvement in solar energy collection and additional drag associated with asymmetric flight. A mission model with a focus on …
