Equivalent-Area Studies For Sonic Boom Loudness Mitigation On A Commercial Supersonic Aircraft Configuration, Zachary N. Foster

All Graduate Reports and Creative Projects, Fall 2023 to Present

Since the early 1970s, the FAA has banned commercial supersonic flight over populated areas. This ban has limited aerospace manufacturers’ and commercial aircraft companies’ ability to design and operate subsonic aircraft in their fleets. Since then, research has been conducted to understand the sonic boom and learn how to minimize its loudness. The work presented in this project report aims to use a 1D low-fidelity analysis to study the effect of perturbations to the outer mold line (OML) of a representative model of the N+2 Quiet Commercial Supersonic Concept Aircraft. Using a 1D analysis that employs an equivalent area method, …

Characterization And Analysis Of Supersonic Flow Through De Laval Nozzles At Varied Design Conditions, Sarah Baird

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

A combined numerical and experimental investigation of supersonic planar nozzles under different design conditions has been conducted. Supersonic planar nozzles are common geometries observed in supersonic wind tunnels and aircraft or rocket engines. For the important role they play in wind tunnel testing and aircraft propulsion, it is important to conduct a thorough numerical and experimental study to characterize their performance at different operating conditions. In this study, a de Laval nozzle was scanned to extract its contours and subsequently modeled to compare analytical and numerical performance expectations under design and off-design conditions. The nozzle was then installed in a …

The Influence Of Mixing Duct Length And Phase Of Flight On Wall Temperatures Of A Rocket Based Combined Cycle Engine In Ejector And Air-Augmented Modes, Jonathan Grow

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

Rocket Based Combined Cycle (RBCC) engines have been theorized as a possible means of powering launch vehicles and high-speed atmospheric vehicles. By incorporating aspects of both air-breathing and rocket propulsion, RBCC engines promise up to a 230 % increase in specific impulse over traditional chemical rocket propulsion by entraining a secondary flow of atmospheric air and mixing it with the exhaust of a rocket motor. Students within the Embry-Riddle Future Space Explorers and Developers Society (ERFSEDS) identified a
problem of excessive heating and structural failure of the mixing duct during launch and transonic flight of a student-built flight test vehicle. …

Solving Supersonic Flows Using The Method Of Integral Relations In Python, Eddie Hsieh

Master's Theses

This thesis presents a modern approach to the Method of Integral Relations implemented in the Python programming language. This work is based on South's reports on solving supersonic conical flows and Belotserkovskii's publications on solving supersonic flows over blunt bodies. The Python SciPy library is extensively used in this thesis. A root finder module is used to perform South's solution process, and the Runge-Kutta ODE solver with dense output is implemented to replicate Belotserkovskii's solution process. The implementation of Python makes the development efficient and serves as an open-source framework for future work to build on. This work focuses on …

Exploring Passive Flow Control Techniques Applied To A Supersonic Multistream Rectangular Nozzle, Emma Dawn Gist Jul 2022

Exploring Passive Flow Control Techniques Applied To A Supersonic Multistream Rectangular Nozzle, Emma Dawn Gist

Dissertations - ALL

Passive control techniques are applied experimentally to examine different aspects of a supersonic multistream rectangular nozzle representing a modern airframe-integrated variable cycle engine. The flow is comprised of a core stream (M = 1.6) and bypass (M = 1.0) that merge behind a splitter plate and exit through a Single Expansion Ramp Nozzle (SERN) onto an aft-deck. Previous efforts for the nominal nozzle configuration have shown that an instability initiated at the splitter plate trailing edge (SPTE) influences the effectiveness of the third stream as a barrier for the aft-deck and persists through the entire do- main due to its …

Aeroacoustics Of Supersonic Jet Interacting With Solid Surfaces And Its Suppression, Seyyed Saman Salehian Aug 2020

Aeroacoustics Of Supersonic Jet Interacting With Solid Surfaces And Its Suppression, Seyyed Saman Salehian

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

The noise generated by supersonic jet is of primary interest in the high-speed flight. In several flight conditions jet exhaust of the propulsion system interacts with solid surfaces. For example, jet impingement on ground for a rocket lift-off, or interactions influenced by the integration of the engine with the airframe. Such complex applications require consideration of the role of acoustic-surface interactions on the noise generation of the jet and its radiation. Numerical analysis of supersonic jet noise involved in these scenarios is investigated by employing Hybrid Large Eddy Simulation – Unsteady Reynolds Averaged Simulation approach to model turbulence.

First, the …

A Higher-Order Method Implemented In An Unstructured Panel Code To Model Linearized Supersonic Flows, Jake Daniel Davis Feb 2019

A Higher-Order Method Implemented In An Unstructured Panel Code To Model Linearized Supersonic Flows, Jake Daniel Davis

Master's Theses

Since their conception in the 1960s, panel codes have remained a critical tool in the design and development of air vehicles. With continued advancement in computational technologies, today's codes are able to solve flow fields around arbitrary bodies more quickly and with higher fidelity than those that preceded them. Panel codes prove most useful during the conceptual design phase of an air vehicle, allowing engineers to iterate designs, and generate full solutions of the flow field around a vehicle in a matter of seconds to minutes instead of hours to days using traditional CFD methods. There have been relatively few …

Design Of Shape-Conforming Nosecone For Optimal Fluid Flow From Transonic To Supersonic Range, Anna Tombazzi Jan 2018

Design Of Shape-Conforming Nosecone For Optimal Fluid Flow From Transonic To Supersonic Range, Anna Tombazzi

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Modern flight vehicles, such as rockets, missiles, and airplanes, experience a force caused by forebody wave drag during the flight. This drag force is induced when the frontal point of each vehicle breaks the pressure wave during flight. Efforts to reduce this wave drag force to improve flight efficiency include modifying the nosecone profile of the flight vehicles to lower the drag force.

This project revolved around creating a design to make the transformation of nosecone shapes from a ¾ Parabolic profile to a ½ Power Series profile possible, mid-flight. Using a novel nosecone assembly, shape memory alloys (SMAs) and …

Heat, Mass And Force Flows In Supersonic Shockwave Interactions, John Michael Dixon May 2012

Heat, Mass And Force Flows In Supersonic Shockwave Interactions, John Michael Dixon

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

There is no cost effective way to deliver a payload to space and, with rising fuel prices, currently the price to travel commercially is also becoming more prohibitive to the public. During supersonic flight, compressive shock waves form around the craft which could be harnessed to deliver an additional lift on the craft. Using a series of hanging plates below a lifting wing design, the total lift generated can be increased above conventional values, while still maintaining a similar lift-to-drag ratio. Here, we study some of the flows involved in supersonic shockwave interaction. This analysis uses ANSYS Fluent Computational Fluid …

The purpose of this research was to analyze the environment a store would travel through if ejected from a supersonic cone. This was done using the Beggar Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) code from the Air Force SEEK Eagle Office at Eglin Air Force Base, FL. CFD simulations were compared to experimental results from a previous AFIT thesis and conclusions were drawn based on whether or not the current wind tunnel setup at AFIT is capable of performing analyses of supersonic store separations. Also included in this research is a study of supersonic base pressure profiles, near-wake velocity profiles, wind tunnel …

Flow Around An Object Projected From A Cavity Into A Supersonic Freestream, Scott T. Bjorge Mar 2004

Flow Around An Object Projected From A Cavity Into A Supersonic Freestream, Scott T. Bjorge

Theses and Dissertations

The pressure and flow field of a supersonic flow over a cavity, with and without a store, was the focus of this experiment. One cavity geometry (length to depth ratio 3.6) was studied; the freestream Mach number and the placement of the store relative to the cavity floor were varied. The pressure spectra on the cavity floor were markedly different between Mach numbers of 1.8 and 2.9. The Mach 1.8 case exhibited clear spectral peaks consistent with predictions by Rossiter, whereas the Mach 2.9 flow did not. With the store placed within the free shear layer, the pressure fluctuations on …
