Flow Visualization Study Of Passive Flow Control Features On A Film-Cooled Turbine Blade Leading Edge, Daniel R. Carroll
Flow Visualization Study Of Passive Flow Control Features On A Film-Cooled Turbine Blade Leading Edge, Daniel R. Carroll
Theses and Dissertations
A flow visualization study was conducted on a model of a film-cooled turbine blade leading edge in a closed-loop water channel at ReD = 30k. The model consisted of an 8.89 cm diameter half-cylinder with flat afterbody joined at the ninety degree point. A single radial coolant hole (dc / D = 0.054) drilled 21.5° from the stagnation line, angled 20° to the surface and 90° to the flow direction generated a coolant jet transverse to the freestream. Water channel testing assessed the hydrodynamic effects of 16 passive flow control features, to include a variety of …

Flow Measurements Using Particle Image Velocimetry In The Ultra Compact Combustor, Levi M. Thomas
Theses and Dissertations
Velocity measurements were performed using the Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) technique on the Ultra Compact Combustor (UCC) test rig at the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT). Velocity patterns and time-averaged turbulence statistics were calculated for data taken with the UCC burning hydrogen fuel in the straight cavity vane and curved cavity vane configurations. The equivalence ratio was varied from 0.7 to 1.5, while the ratio of cavity air to main air was varied from 5% to 20% in testing performed on the straight vane configuration. Spanwise velocity was observed to decrease linearly with distance from the cavity vane over …
Spatial Instability Of Electrically Driven Jets With Finite Conductivity And Under Constant Or Variable Applied Field, Saulo Orizaga, Daniel N. Riahi
Spatial Instability Of Electrically Driven Jets With Finite Conductivity And Under Constant Or Variable Applied Field, Saulo Orizaga, Daniel N. Riahi
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
We investigate the problem of spatial instability of electrically driven viscous jets with finite electrical conductivity and in the presence of either a constant or a variable applied electric field. A mathematical model, which is developed and used for the spatially growing disturbances in electrically driven jet flows, leads to a lengthy equation for the unknown growth rate and frequency of the disturbances. This equation is solved numerically using Newton’s method. For neutral temporal stability boundary, we find, in particular, two new spatial modes of instability under certain conditions. One of these modes is enhanced by the strength Ω of …

Numerical Simulation Of Mode Transition In A Hydrogen-Fueled Scramjet, Manan Ajay Vyas
Master's Theses - Daytona Beach
The Wind-US computational fluid dynamics (CFD) flow solver was used to simulate dual-mode direct-connect ramjet/scramjet engine flowpath tests conducted in the University of Virginia (UVa) Supersonic Combustion Facility (SCF). The objective was to develop a computational capability within Wind-US to aid current hypersonic research and provide insight to flow as well as chemistry details that are not resolved by instruments available. Computational results are compared with experimental data to validate the accuracy of the numerical modeling. These results include two fuel-off non-reacting and eight fuel-on reacting cases with different equivalence ratios, split between one set with a clean (non-vitiated) air …

Aerodynamic Performance Enhancement Of A Naca 66–206 Airfoil Using Supersonic Channel Airfoil Design, David Michael Giles
Master's Theses
Supersonic channel airfoil design techniques have been shown to significantly reduce drag in high-speed flows over diamond shaped airfoils by Ruffin and colleagues. The effect of applying these techniques to a NACA 66-206 airfoil is presented. The design domain entails channel heights of 8-16.6% thickness-to-chord and speeds from Mach 1.5-3.0. Numerical simulations show an increase in the lift-to-drag ratio for airfoils at Mach 2.5 at a 35,000-ft altitude with a 12% channel height geometry showing a benefit of 17.2% at 6-deg angle of attack and a sharp channel leading edge. Wave drag is significantly reduced while viscous forces are slightly …

Thermal Modeling Of Lithium-Ion Energy Storage Systems For Hybrid Electric Vehicles Using Computational Fluid Dynamics With Conjugate Heat Transfer, Craig R. Czlapinski
Master's Theses - Daytona Beach
The success and performance of a Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) relies largely on its Energy Storage System (ESS). High temperatures and thermal variations can significantly affect a battery's performance and lifecycle. An effective thermal management system is vital to the health and safe operation of the ESS's batteries. A well designed thermal management system begins with the accurate prediction of the battery's thermal conditions. In hot climates, HEVs may be required to operate within ten degrees Celsius of the maximum safe operating temperature of their batteries. This study aims to evaluate the thermal management system of a lithium-ion based energy …

Aerodynamic Analysis Of An Urban Magnetic Levitation Vehicle, John Matthew Wells
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
This thesis will detail the aerodynamic qualities of a magnetic levitation concept vehicle designed to be installed on Old Dominion University's campus. The vehicle is representative of a class of small, low-speed Maglev systems commonly referred to as Urban Maglev. A 1:12 scale model underwent testing in Old Dominion's low speed wind tunnel. Force and moment coefficients were measured over a wide range of yaw angles. Results give insight into crosswind effects and how these forces affect vehicle dynamics. An analysis of this type is important in understanding the ride quality and safety of the system. Force Coefficients range from …
Least-Squares, Continuous Sensitivity Analysis For Nonlinear Fluid-Structure Interaction, Douglas P. Wickert
Least-Squares, Continuous Sensitivity Analysis For Nonlinear Fluid-Structure Interaction, Douglas P. Wickert
Theses and Dissertations
A least-squares, continuous sensitivity analysis method is developed for transient aeroelastic gust response problems to support computationally efficient analysis and optimization of aeroelastic design problems. A key distinction between the local and total derivative forms of the sensitivity system is introduced. The continuous sensitivity equations and sensitivity boundary conditions are derived in local derivative form which is shown to be superior for several applications. The analysis and sensitivity problems are both posed in a first-order form which is amenable to a solution using the least-squares finite element method. Several example and validation problems are presented and solved, including elasticity, fluid, …
Rayleigh Flow Of Two-Phase Nitrous Oxide As A Hybrid Rocket Nozzle Coolant, Lauren May Nelson
Rayleigh Flow Of Two-Phase Nitrous Oxide As A Hybrid Rocket Nozzle Coolant, Lauren May Nelson
Master's Theses
The Mechanical Engineering Department at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo currently maintains a lab-scale hybrid rocket motor for which nitrous oxide is utilized as the oxidizer in the combustion system. Because of its availability, the same two-phase (gas and liquid) nitrous oxide that is used in the combustion system is also routed around the throat of the hybrid rocket’s converging-diverging nozzle as a coolant. While this coolant system has proven effective empirically in previous tests, the physics behind the flow of the two-phase mixture is largely unexplained. This thesis provides a method for predicting some of its …

The Interaction Between Throttling And Thrust Vectoring Of An Annular Aerospike Nozzle, David Michael Imbaratto
Master's Theses
Applied research and testing has been conducted at the Cal Poly San Luis Obispo High-pressure Blow-Down facility to study the affects of throttling in a thrust-vectored aerospike nozzle. This study supports the ongoing research at Cal Poly to effectively thrust vector a hybrid rocket motor. Such thrust vectoring is achieved by small secondary ports in the nozzle body that are perpendicular to the main nozzle. The testing conducted included characterizing and comparing the performance of a straight aerospike nozzle to that of a thrust-vectored aerospike nozzle. Throttling effects on the aerospike nozzle in an unvectored and in a vectored configuration …
Efficient Simulation Of Fluid Flow, David Hannasch, Monika Neda
Efficient Simulation Of Fluid Flow, David Hannasch, Monika Neda
Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP)
We are computationally investigating fluid flow models for physically correct predictions of flow structures. Models based on the idea of filtering the small scales/structures and also the Navier-Stokes equations which are the fundamental equations of fluid flow, are numerically solved via the continuous finite element method. Crank-Nicolson and fractional-step theta scheme are used for the discretization of the time derivative, while the Taylor-Hood and Mini elements are used for the discretization is space. The effectiveness of these numerical discretizations in time and space are examined by studying the accuracy of fluid characteristics, such as drag, lift and pressure drop.

Numerical Study Of Confined Flow Past An Airfoil Injector With A Planar Jet, Omar A. Alabbasi
Numerical Study Of Confined Flow Past An Airfoil Injector With A Planar Jet, Omar A. Alabbasi
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Vortex shedding from an airfoil injector in a channel is investigated by using a numerical solution for unsteady, two-dimensional, Navier-Stokes Equations. A second-order implicit finite-volume scheme is employed to solve the equations. The effect on vortex shedding of a planar jet injected from the rear of the injector is studied. The effect of the jet velocity on the vortex shedding and its drag and lift coefficients are also studied at different blockage ratios and Reynolds numbers for laminar flow. Initial results to validate previous numerical simulations are performed on a square cylinder with and without a planar jet. Good agreement …
An Investigation Of Shock Wave Physics Via Hybrid Cfd-Bgk Solution Methods For Nonequilibrium Flows, Brook I. Bentley
An Investigation Of Shock Wave Physics Via Hybrid Cfd-Bgk Solution Methods For Nonequilibrium Flows, Brook I. Bentley
Theses and Dissertations
The Unified Flow Solver, a hybrid continuum-rarefied code, is used to investigate the internal structure of a normal shock wave for a Mach range of 1.55 to 9.0 for Argon, and 1.53 to 3.8 for diatomic Nitrogen. Reciprocal shock thickness, density, temperature, heat flux, and the velocity distribution function are calculated for a one-dimensional shock wave and compared with experimental data from Alsmeyer and DSMC results from Bird. Using the Euler, Navier-Stokes, BGK model, and Three-Temperature BGK model schemes, results from UFS compare well with experiment and DSMC. The Euler scheme shows atypical results, possibly resulting from modifications made to …
Least-Squares Finite Element Formulation For Fluid-Structure Interaction, Cody C. Rasmussen
Least-Squares Finite Element Formulation For Fluid-Structure Interaction, Cody C. Rasmussen
Theses and Dissertations
Fluid-structure interaction problems prove difficult due to the coupling between fluid and solid behavior. Typically, different theoretical formulations and numerical methods are used to solve fluid and structural problems separately. The least-squares finite element method is capable of accurately solving both fluid and structural problems. This capability allows for a simultaneously coupled fluid structure interaction formulation using a single variational approach to solve complex and nonlinear aeroelasticity problems. The least-squares finite element method was compared to commonly used methods for both structures and fluids individually. The fluid analysis was compared to finite differencing methods and the structural analysis type compared …

Wind Tunnel Analysis And Flight Test Of A Wing Fence On A T-38, Michael D. Williams
Theses and Dissertations
A low-speed wind tunnel study and flight tests were performed to examine the effects of a wing fence on the T-38A. Wind tunnel results were based upon force and moment data collected with a six-component balance and flow visualization at Reynolds numbers up to 0.3 x 106, based on mean aerodynamic chord. The model did not include the last 7.79 feet of the aircraft, and the engine and exhaust were modeled as through-holes. Five fence geometries, placed at wing station 125 (± 0.825 semispan), were compared. The best performer of these designs, based on drag polar, was the …

The Effects Of Elasticity In The Foundation On The Flutter Of A Metallic High Aspect Ratio Wing, Horacio Esteban Sepic Kriskovich
The Effects Of Elasticity In The Foundation On The Flutter Of A Metallic High Aspect Ratio Wing, Horacio Esteban Sepic Kriskovich
Master's Theses - Daytona Beach
The goal of this thesis is to study the flutter characteristics of a metallic high-aspect ratio wing, with linearly varying chord across the semis-span, and a simulated elastic foundation. The general planform of the wing is similar to the one found in a High- Altitude Long-Endurance Uninhabited Aerial Surveillance Vehicle (HALE USAV).
The problem is studied using a simplified aerodynamic loading based on thin-airfoil theory, which is then combined with a Lagrangian formulation to solve the system as stationary. The wing has no control surfaces or external stores, and is modeled as a uniform beam with known mechanical properties, being …
Volume Viscosity In Fluids With Multiple Dissipative Processes, Allan J. Zuckerwar, Robert L. Ash
Volume Viscosity In Fluids With Multiple Dissipative Processes, Allan J. Zuckerwar, Robert L. Ash
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications
The variational principle of Hamilton is applied to derive the volume viscosity coefficients of a reacting fluid with multiple dissipative processes. The procedure, as in the case of a single dissipative process, yields two dissipative terms in the Navier-Stokes equation: The first is the traditional volume viscosity term, proportional to the dilatational component of the velocity; the second term is proportional to the material time derivative of the pressure gradient. Each dissipative process is assumed to be independent of the others. In a fluid comprising a single constituent with multiple relaxation processes, the relaxation times of the multiple processes are …
