Effects Of Boundary Layer Flow Control Using Plasma Actuator Discharges, Jeffrey M. Newcamp Sep 2005

Effects Of Boundary Layer Flow Control Using Plasma Actuator Discharges, Jeffrey M. Newcamp

Theses and Dissertations

This study addresses the usage and effects of atmospheric plasma discharges on the near wall flow conditions for a Pak-B low-pressure turbine blade. A plasma actuator was built normal to the freestream flow in a low-speed wind tunnel. The test section of the wind tunnel had a contoured upper wall geometry designed to mimic the suction side of a Pak-B turbine blade. A high frequency ac voltage source supplied three voltages in the kilovolt range at four Reynolds numbers in the experiment, between 10,000 and 103,000. The effect of the plasma on the near-wall boundary layer conditions was evaluated at …

The Effect Of Aerodynamic Surfaces Versus Thrust Maneuvers On Reentry Vehicles, Meredith M. Albrecht Sep 2005

The Effect Of Aerodynamic Surfaces Versus Thrust Maneuvers On Reentry Vehicles, Meredith M. Albrecht

Theses and Dissertations

This research effort analyzes the effect of aerodynamic surfaces versus thrust maneuvers on a reentry vehicle. At high altitudes the effect of aerodynamic surfaces on the reentry vehicle is small due to low atmospheric density; however as the vehicle reaches lower altitudes a lift maneuver is very successful in deflecting the vehicle and creating a large impact footprint. When a continuous thrust maneuver is input in the place of a lift maneuver the results are very similar at the highest maneuver altitudes, although the impact footprint shrinks rapidly as the maneuver altitude decreases. Additionally, when the thrust maneuver is along …

Computational Sensing And Closed-Loop Active Flow Control Of Airfoil At Post-Stall Conditions, Volkan Kamaci Jul 2005

Computational Sensing And Closed-Loop Active Flow Control Of Airfoil At Post-Stall Conditions, Volkan Kamaci

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Flow separation over lifting aerodynamic components, such as airfoils and wings, occurs during stall conditions which are caused by adverse changes (i.e. high angle of attack, inflow conditions, etc.) in the operating conditions of aerodynamic components. During stall conditions, the flow over airfoil loses its momentum, creating high pressure zones on the upper surface of the airfoil and even a small increase in pressure causes the fluid particles to stop and separate to a low pressure zone. In order to eliminate the flow separation, the low momentum flow should be removed in order to maintain the high momentum and low …

Experimental Investigation Into The Aerodynamic Ground Effect Of A Tailless Chevron-Shaped Ucav, Brett L. Jones Jun 2005

Experimental Investigation Into The Aerodynamic Ground Effect Of A Tailless Chevron-Shaped Ucav, Brett L. Jones

Theses and Dissertations

This experimental study adequately identified the ground effect region of an unmanned combat air vehicle (UCAV). The AFIT 3' x 3' low-speed wind tunnel and a ground plane were used to simulate the forces and moments on a UCAV model in ground effect. The chevron planform used in this study was originally tested for stability and control and the following extends the already existing database to include ground effects. The ground plane was a flat plate mounted with cylindrical legs. To expand the capabilities of the AFIT 3' x 3' low-speed wind tunnel, hot-wire measurements and flow visualization revealed an …

Boundary Layer Control Of A Circular Cylinder Using A Synthetic Jet, Christopher K. Smith Jun 2005

Boundary Layer Control Of A Circular Cylinder Using A Synthetic Jet, Christopher K. Smith

Theses and Dissertations

Active control of flow around a circular cylinder at a sub-critical Reynolds number was studied experimentally. The flow was controlled by using a synthetic jet which ran span wise along the cylinder and emanated radially from the cylinder. The experiments were conducted over a two dimensional cylinder in a water tunnel at a Reynolds number of approximately 5800. Seven different jet locations and seven different jet oscillation frequencies were examined. Particle image velocimetry (PIV) was used for flow visualization. The synthetic jet proved to delay flow separation at a wide range of locations and oscillation frequencies. The greatest positive effect …

Derivation Of A Numerical Method For Computing 3-D Magnetoplasmadynamic Flows In Thermodynamic Non-Equilibrium, Caroline CéCile Marcelle Liron May 2005

Derivation Of A Numerical Method For Computing 3-D Magnetoplasmadynamic Flows In Thermodynamic Non-Equilibrium, Caroline CéCile Marcelle Liron

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

Various models exist for the propulsion concept using magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). Various authors, such as Powell, Canupp, Candler, and MacCormack have dealt with issues of solving the magnetic field induction equations simultaneously with Navier-Stokes equations using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). Although most authors deal with species non-equilibrium and thermal non-equilibrium, a new emphasis is set to study the impact of electrons with the electron energy and the electronic excitation energy, as well as a complex energy non-equilibrium.

This thesis presents the derivation of a numerical method for computing 3-D MHD flows for the purpose of modeling steady-state magnetoplasma …

A Computational Study Of Thermo-Fluid Dynamics Of Pulse Detonation Engines, Alberto Davila Urresti Apr 2005

A Computational Study Of Thermo-Fluid Dynamics Of Pulse Detonation Engines, Alberto Davila Urresti

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

The purpose of this thesis is to use a transient Computational Fluid Dynamics computer code written in FORTRAN 90 for full reaction kinetics, to perform an analysis of the physical processes and chemical phenomena occurring on a single cycle of an ideal Pulse Detonation Engine (PDE) using a stoichiometric mixture of H2 and O2. A small zone of high pressure and temperature is used to initiate the detonation wave in the PDE. A simple case with no chemical reactions and the same PDE geometry and “computational spark” is also tested. The speed of the wave relative to …

Experimental Study Of The Subsonic Aerodynamics Of A Blended Wing Body Air Vehicle With A Focus On Rapid Technology Assessment, David A. Gebbie

Theses and Dissertations

The subsonic aerodynamic performance of a blended wing body aircraft constructed using selective laser sintering was assessed in the AFIT low-speed wind tunnel. The scaled-down model of a strike tanker aircraft consisted of a shaped fuselage and sweptback wings. The Reynolds number, based on mean wing chord, during testing was on the order of 105 while the Mach number ranged from 0.10 to 0.20. The model evaluation and analysis process included force and moment measurements acquired from a wind tunnel balance, pressure data measured with 8 taps located on the model’s upper surface, a comparison to computational fluid dynamics (CFD) …

Boundary Layer Flow Control Using Plasma Induced Velocity, Brian E. Balcer Mar 2005

Boundary Layer Flow Control Using Plasma Induced Velocity, Brian E. Balcer

Theses and Dissertations

An examination of the effects of plasma induced velocity on boundary layer flow was conducted. A pair of thin copper film electrodes spanned the test section, oriented at thirty degrees from normal to the free stream flow. An adverse pressure gradient was imposed over the electrode configuration using a pressure coefficient profile similar to that associated with suction side of a Pac-B low pressure turbine blade. In addition, suction was applied to keep flow attached on the upper wall, inducing separation over the electrode. The electrode is supplied by an AC source at three different power levels with the free …

Entropy Generation As A Means Of Examining Continuum Breakdown, Christopher R. Schrock Mar 2005

Entropy Generation As A Means Of Examining Continuum Breakdown, Christopher R. Schrock

Theses and Dissertations

To quantify the validity and breakdown of the continuum equations of fluid flow, the concept of entropy generation is examined. This parameter is formulated utilizing statistical mechanics and kinetic theory to avoid the use of equilibrium assumptions. This analysis leads to expressions in terms of energy distribution functions. These results are applied to monatomic and diatomic molecules. A numerical procedure for computing these values using the Direct Simulation Monte Carlo Method (DSMC) is presented. Normal shock waves in argon and nitrogen were simulated at Mach numbers ranging from 1.2 to 10. Results are compared to Navier-Stokes predictions. The Navier-Stokes equations …

Computational Aeroelastic Analysis Of Micro Air Vehicle With Experimentally Determined Modes, Joshua A. Stults Mar 2005

Computational Aeroelastic Analysis Of Micro Air Vehicle With Experimentally Determined Modes, Joshua A. Stults

Theses and Dissertations

A computational aeroelastic analysis of a micro air vehicle (MAV) is conducted. This MAV has a 24 inch wing span, and is designed for local area reconnaissance. Wind tunnel data for the MAV with a rigid carbon fiber wing and a flexible carbon fiber ribbed nylon wing are compared to CFD results incorporating static and dynamic deformations. We use laser vibrometry to determine the mode shapes of the flexible wing. From these shapes, CFD grid deformations are calculated as part of a closely-coupled aeroelastic solution method. The accuracy of MAV performance predictions using CFD with and without aeroelastic modeling is …

Validation Of Turbulence Models In The Beggar Code For Unsteady Flow, Kevin G. Storm Mar 2005

Validation Of Turbulence Models In The Beggar Code For Unsteady Flow, Kevin G. Storm

Theses and Dissertations

Validation of the turbulence models in the CFD code Beggar for unsteady turbulent flow are discussed. Six validation cases of the code are considered, three cases with the intent of validating the code without the turbulence model and three cases to validate the turbulence model itself. Finally, a more realistic simulation of a simplified store is examined. The turbulence models considered are the Baldwin-Lomax, Spalart-Allmaras, and a DES model. The conclusions made deal with necessary prerequisites to properly simulating unsteady turbulent flow and model selection. The prerequisites necessary in the Beggar code are a second order temporal discretization and the …

Characterization Of Upstream Mixing Cavities And A Downstream Combustion Cavity In Supersonic Flow, Adam P. Quick Mar 2005

Characterization Of Upstream Mixing Cavities And A Downstream Combustion Cavity In Supersonic Flow, Adam P. Quick

Theses and Dissertations

A key area of study in air-breathing hydrocarbon-fueled scramjet combustors is the characterization of cavity-based fuel injection and flame holding. One issue concerns oscillatory disturbances caused by trapped vortices in the main flame holder cavity as a fuel-air mixing enhancement technique. Previous research demonstrates that oscillatory disturbances can be carried downstream via the shear layer and alter the oscillatory characteristics of a downstream cavity. This study investigates the mixing effectiveness of three upstream direct-fueled mixing cavities as well as the effect on the oscillatory behavior of the downstream combustion cavity by the upstream mixing cavity. The three upstream mixing cavities …

Development Of A Higher-Order Upwind Algorithm For Compressible Fluid Flow, Barry A. Croker Mar 2005

Development Of A Higher-Order Upwind Algorithm For Compressible Fluid Flow, Barry A. Croker

Theses and Dissertations

A global fourth-order solution method that incorporates compact differencing with Roe's approximate Riemann solver was investigated. This method was incorporated into a one-dimensional numerical simulation of the compressible Euler equations, and applied to a one-dimensional shock tube problem. The method was also extended to two dimensions, and applied to a two-dimensional shock tube problem and an advecting vortical structure problem on both rectilinear and curvilinear meshes. The results were compared to a third-order Roe scheme and a fourth-order compact difference scheme. An order of accuracy determination showed that it has an order of accuracy somewhere near fourth order, with absolute …

Quantifying Initial Condition And Parametric Uncertainties In A Nonlinear Aeroelastic System With An Efficient Stochastic Algorithm, Daniel R. Millman Sep 2004

Quantifying Initial Condition And Parametric Uncertainties In A Nonlinear Aeroelastic System With An Efficient Stochastic Algorithm, Daniel R. Millman

Theses and Dissertations

There is a growing interest in understanding how uncertainties in flight conditions and structural parameters affect the character of a limit cycle oscillation (LCO) response, leading to failure of an aeroelastic system. Uncertainty quantification of a stochastic system (parametric uncertainty) with stochastic inputs (initial condition uncertainty) has traditionally been analyzed with Monte Carlo simulations (MCS). Probability density functions (PDF) of the LCO response are obtained from the MCS to estimate the probability of failure. A candidate approach to efficiently estimate the PDF of an LCO response is the stochastic projection method. The objective of this research is to extend the …

Aerodynamic Analysis Of Lattice Grid Fins In Transonic Flow, Karl S. Orthner Jun 2004

Aerodynamic Analysis Of Lattice Grid Fins In Transonic Flow, Karl S. Orthner

Theses and Dissertations

Lattice grid fins have been studied for missile tail control for several years. A lattice grid fin can be described as an unconventional missile control surface comprised of an outer frame supported by an inner lattice grid of lifting surfaces. This unconventional fin design offers favorable lift characteristics at high angle of attack as well as almost zero hinge moments allowing the use of small and light actuators. In addition, they promise good storability for potential tube-launched and internal carriage dispenser-launched applications. The drawback for the lattice grid fins is the high drag and potentially poor radar cross section performance …

Magnetogasdynamic Flow Acceleration In A Scramjet Nozzle, Brian H. Harrington Jun 2004

Magnetogasdynamic Flow Acceleration In A Scramjet Nozzle, Brian H. Harrington

Theses and Dissertations

The effect of magnetogasdynamic (MGD) interactions on flow acceleration and thrust in a scramjet accelerator/nozzle are examined numerically at a free-stream flight condition of Mach 8. The parameters of conductivity pattern and load factor are varied in both inviscid and viscous flow regimes with the intent of increasing axial force exerted on the flow through a scramjet accelerator. The numerical code solves the Navier-Stokes equations with additional source terms for the MGD forces and energy interactions. An accelerating Lorentz force is applied to the flow resulting from a constant magnetic field and an electric field produced by two continuous side …

Cold Flow Testing Of A Modified Subscale Model Exhaust System For A Space Based Laser, David B. Jarrett Jun 2004

Cold Flow Testing Of A Modified Subscale Model Exhaust System For A Space Based Laser, David B. Jarrett

Theses and Dissertations

The aim of this research was a continued study of gas-dynamic phenomena that occurred in a set of stacked nozzles as reported by Captains Ian Bautista in 2003 and Scott Bergren in 2002. The arrangement of the stacked nozzles was a modified version of a 1/5th scale-model of one quadrant of the conceptual Space Based Laser Integrated Flight Experiment (SBL IFX) gas dynamic laser. Rather than cylindrical rings of nozzles, the stacked nozzles were flat and able to be rotated about a vector normal to the nozzle exits. This set of stacked flat nozzles was installed on a blow-down/vacuum wind …

Numerical Study Of Combustion Of Hydrogen And Ethylene In A Two-Dimensional Dual-Mode Scramjet Combustor, Robert A. Carson Apr 2004

Numerical Study Of Combustion Of Hydrogen And Ethylene In A Two-Dimensional Dual-Mode Scramjet Combustor, Robert A. Carson

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

This thesis presents computational fluid dynamics results for two-dimensional flow geometries utilizing two fuels, hydrogen (H2) and ethylene (C2H4). Upstream interaction was evident with the use of both fuels due in part to recirculation in the combustor, the inlet pressures and the combustion process. Results were obtained for hydrogen using a reduced chemical kinetic model while results obtained for ethylene employed a reduced chemical kinetic model as well as an expanded chemical kinetic model.

Initially, an examination of grid composition was conducted in order to select the most numerically efficient and accurate grid for reacting flow in the current combustor …

Flow Around An Object Projected From A Cavity Into A Supersonic Freestream, Scott T. Bjorge Mar 2004

Flow Around An Object Projected From A Cavity Into A Supersonic Freestream, Scott T. Bjorge

Theses and Dissertations

The pressure and flow field of a supersonic flow over a cavity, with and without a store, was the focus of this experiment. One cavity geometry (length to depth ratio 3.6) was studied; the freestream Mach number and the placement of the store relative to the cavity floor were varied. The pressure spectra on the cavity floor were markedly different between Mach numbers of 1.8 and 2.9. The Mach 1.8 case exhibited clear spectral peaks consistent with predictions by Rossiter, whereas the Mach 2.9 flow did not. With the store placed within the free shear layer, the pressure fluctuations on …

Magnetogasdynamic Flow Control Of A Mach Reflection, Brian E. Earp Mar 2004

Magnetogasdynamic Flow Control Of A Mach Reflection, Brian E. Earp

Theses and Dissertations

Two-dimensional regular and Mach reflections have been studied in the Mach 4.96 dual-solution domain for a 25° and 26° double-fin inlet. The steady-state computational Mach and regular reflections were subjected to magnetogasdynamic forces to determine whether these forces could be used as a possible flow control mechanism. The numerical code employed for this research solved the inviscid Euler equations with added source terms for the ponderomotive force and accompanying energy interactions. The 25° regular reflection was determined to be extremely sensitive to a decelerating Lorentz force. Transient application of the force led to the transition of the regular reflection to …

An Original Method For Computing Complex Non-Premixed Flows In Chemical Equilibrium, Raphael Cioffl Aug 2003

An Original Method For Computing Complex Non-Premixed Flows In Chemical Equilibrium, Raphael Cioffl

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

A novel method for computing chemical equilibrium reactions in three-dimensional reacting fluid flows is introduced in this paper. The originality of the method is that continuity equations are solved for the atomic densities rather than for the molecular species densities, as is the case for non-equilibrium flow calculations. The method is suited for applications to mixing flows in rocket engine combustors, where, due to the typical low convective speed, chemical reaction is best modeled as an equilibrium process. Equilibrium formulations usually describe the flow as a perfect, atomically uniform mix between the fuel and the oxidizer. This assumption tends to …

A Numerical Analysis Of A Non-Porous, Flexible Upper Airfoil Surface, Asao Omura Jul 2003

A Numerical Analysis Of A Non-Porous, Flexible Upper Airfoil Surface, Asao Omura

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The aerodynamic behavior of the early Wright brothers' airfoils is an important element of the history of aeronautics. Their fabric-covered wings were not constrained to maintain the airfoil shape of their wooden rib substructures and therefore differences in performance between rigid and flexible Wright airfoil shapes can be expected. The purpose of this thesis was to develop a systematic numerical approach that allows an assessment of the influence of the fabric on the overall aerodynamic behavior of the Wright Model B airfoil. The Model B airfoil was chosen because it is the earliest "production" airfoil and has sufficient documentation to …

Implementation And Testing Of Unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes And Detached Eddy Simulation Using An Implicit Unstructured Multigrid Scheme, Juan A. Palaez Apr 2003

Implementation And Testing Of Unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes And Detached Eddy Simulation Using An Implicit Unstructured Multigrid Scheme, Juan A. Palaez

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Investigation and development of the Detached Eddy Simulation (DES) technique for the computation of unsteady flows on unstructured grids are presented. The motivation of the research work is driven by the ultimate goal of predicting separated flows of aerodynamic importance, such as massive stall or flows over complex non-streamlined geometries. These cases, in which large regions of massively separated flow are present, represent a challenge for conventional Unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) models, that in many cases, cannot produce solutions accurate enough and/or fast enough for industrial design and applications. A Detached Eddy Simulation model is implemented and its performance compared …

Development Of An Experimental Test Section For Forcing Unsteady Flow In A Linear Compressor Cascade Using Circular Rods, Patrick C. Wade Mar 2003

Development Of An Experimental Test Section For Forcing Unsteady Flow In A Linear Compressor Cascade Using Circular Rods, Patrick C. Wade

Theses and Dissertations

Upstream propagating waves impinging on a cascade of compressor blades were examined in an effort to better understand the influence of downstream components on high cycle fatigue in turbine engines. An array of cylinders was used to simulate the unsteady field generated by a rotor downstream of a set of stators. The unsteady flow upstream of a single cylinder and an array of cylinders, with and without an upstream cascade, was examined experimentally and computationally. Computational results indicate that the cylinders would only shed coherently when placed downstream of a set of blades. Coherent shedding is created when each of …

Nonlinear, Transonic Flutter Prediction For F-16 Stores Configuration Clearance, Raymond G. Toth Mar 2003

Nonlinear, Transonic Flutter Prediction For F-16 Stores Configuration Clearance, Raymond G. Toth

Theses and Dissertations

Wing flutter, or more accurately limit cycle oscillation (LCO), has been an issue for the F-16 since its operational deployment. Different store configurations and the permutations of those configurations after weapons are released will cause LCO to either disappear or appear. Unfortunately, the current method used by engineers for predicting LCO onset is based on linear, subsonic aerodynamic theory with no corrections for transonic effects. Predictions using this method are often good in frequency, but can be far off in predicting onset speed, forcing flutter engineers to rely more on experience and interpolation from similar configurations to design flight test …

Computational Fluid Dynamics Investigation Of Vortex Breakdown For A Delta Wing At High Angle Of Attack, Jacob A. Freeman Mar 2003

Computational Fluid Dynamics Investigation Of Vortex Breakdown For A Delta Wing At High Angle Of Attack, Jacob A. Freeman

Theses and Dissertations

Using the commercially available FLUENT 3-D flow field solver, this research effort investigated vortex breakdown over a delta wing at high angle of attack (α) in preparation for investigation of active control of vortex breakdown using steady, along- core blowing. A flat delta-shaped half-wing with sharp leading edge and sweep angle of 60° was modeled at α=18° in a wind tunnel at Mach 0.04 and Reynolds number of 3.4 x 105. A hybrid (combination of structured and unstructured) numerical mesh was generated to accommodate blowing ports on the wing surface. Results for cases without and with along-core blowing …

Use Of Dimples To Suppress Boundary Layer Separation On A Low Pressure Turbine Blade, Kurt P. Rouser Dec 2002

Use Of Dimples To Suppress Boundary Layer Separation On A Low Pressure Turbine Blade, Kurt P. Rouser

Theses and Dissertations

Flow separation on a low pressure turbine blade is explored at Reynolds numbers of 25k, 45k and 100k. Experimental data is collected in a low-speed, draw-down wind tunnel using a cascade of eight Pak-B blades. Flow is examined from measurements of blade surface pressures, boundary layer parameters, exit velocities, and total pressure losses across the blade. Two recessed dimple shapes are assessed for suppressing flow separation and associated losses. One dimple is spherical, and the second is asymmetric, formed from a full dimple spanwise half-filled. A single row of each dimple shape is tested at 50%, 55% and 65% axial …
