Esta sombría afirmación, escrita por el eminente crítico de teatro español Moisés Peréz Coterillo, figuraba en su introducción a la edición de 1991 de la farsa en un acto Interview de Mrs. Muerta Smith por sus fantasmas de Agustín Gómez-Arcos. En efecto, el caso de Gómez-Arcos (Almería, 1933 - París, 1998) representa una paradoja extraordinaria para los observadores del flujo y reflujo de la historia literaria europea. This article illustrates how Lope de Vega, in his Rimas Humanas y Divinas Del Licenciado Tome de Burguillos, subverts idealized female beauty through the glorification of a more commonplace feminine object, while the time-honored poetic conventions which favored the former are deconstructed and replaced by a new anti-norm of female objectification.

Agustín Gómez-Arcos, Sharon G. Feldman

Latin American, Latino and Iberian Studies Faculty Publications

Agustín Gómez-Arcos, a bilingual dramatist and novelist, was born in 1933 in the village of Enix (Almeria). The origins of his theater can be traced to his childhood experiences, in which he witnessed firsthand the horrors of the Spanish Civil War and the dark clouds of oppression of the Francoist regime, images that left indelible imprints on his literature and his life. Although in the future he would leave behind both native country and language, his memories of the Civil War and postwar period would continue to surface in his plays.

Balkan Influences On The Eastern Sephardic Romance, Steve Nelson

The present study examines the local influences on the ballads on the Eastern Sephardic Jews. With very few exceptions, these influences are from the Turkish language and from Modern Greek folk balladry. Therefore, I have divided the results of my findings into these two categories.

In the section concerning Sephardic ballads influenced by Greek folk poetry, I synthesize and expand upon the findings of Samuel Armistead and Joseph Silverman, who have combed through more than one hundred different Greek ballad collections to determine how these have influenced the Sephardic romancero. In this paper, I will argue that many of the miracles in Gonzalo de Berceo's Milagros De Nuestra Señora reflect the ecclesiastic laws drawn up by Pope Innocent III at the Fourth Lateran Council. In response to a malaise in thirteenth-century Christianity, created in part by a lack of effective central government and by the perceived threat of the Jews and Arabs, Pope Innocent III called to order the Fourth Lateran Council in 1215 and marshalled bishops from all over Europe, including seventy-five percent of Spain's bishops.

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

The prize-winning Bildungsroman, or coming-of-age novel, Nada ( 1944) by the Spanish writer Carmen Laforet, tells the story of eighteen-year-old Andrea, who, in the aftermath of the Spanish Civil War, fulfills her long awaited dream of traveling to Barcelona to study at its University. But the house on Aribau Street, where her relatives live, turns out to be a microcosm of Spanish social ills. It is filled with the spiritual, moral, physical and emotional decadence typical of Spain in the post-Civil War period of the 1940's, hence the title Nada [Nothing]. A study of the metapoetic and self-referential aspects of Lope de Vega's poetry. For this study, metapoetry is to be understood as lyrical works that refer in some way to their existence as artistic constructs and those which include an evaluation or examination of poetry.

Cervantes And The Reinvention Of The Picaresque Narrative In The Novelas Ejemplares, Mark J. Mascia

This article presents an analysis of a number of stories in Miguel de Cervantes' Novelas Ejemplares, illustrating how he experimented with and altered the picaresque narrative by openly incorporating many elements of the genre into this work. This article shows how Cervantes is not a purely canonical picaresque author, but rather a quasi- or semi-picaresque writer, inventing what might be called Cervantine picaresque literature.

Constructions Of Domesticity In Nineteenth-Century Spanish America, Lee Joan Skinner

It is by now a commonplace that in nineteenth-century Spanish American literature the family serves as a metaphor for the nation and that authors express their political agendas through allegories of courtship and marriage. In such readings, potential love matches symbolize the reconciliation of contesting political or ethnic groups and point toward ways for the newly-formed Spanish American nations to negotiate difference without falling into civil war.
