Writing Victims: Post-Terrorist Fiction(S) In The Basque Country And Spain, Roland Vazquez

Re-visioning Terrorism

This paper examines the recent evolution of fiction in and about the Basque Country. I focus on depictions of the victims of ETA’s violence, and literature that documents their plight in the genres of the novel and short story. One trend is the movement away from “terrorist” and toward “victim” as the narrative focus. Another is an art increasingly in service to a political agenda. Although much of this corpus focuses on everyday details richer than those found in the mass media, social-scientific literature, or victim testimony, these forms often blur in their rhetorical styles.

The Appalachian region of the United States encompasses fourteen states, ranging from southern New York to northern Mississippi. Despite the thousands of miles separating the mountain region of Appalachia within the United States and the small, diverse country of Ecuador, the two areas are decisively similar in their values. These values are clearly demonstrated in the traditional children’s folk stories, passed down orally between generations, in both Ecuador and Appalachia. Having surveyed anonymous subjects in both areas, four stories from Ecuador and seven stories from Appalachia have been collected at random in order to draw on comparison and contrast of …

The reason that Hamlet and Don Quixote can be studied so thoroughly on the poststructuralist notion of a false or constructed reality is because they were both works far ahead of their time, often reflecting extremely postmodernist ideas. Don Quixote is generally considered the first modern novel, and Hamlet is also identified with the beginning of the modern age (Oort 319). Yet beyond this, these authors play games with the reader and with the structure of the fiction itself, which would fit sensibly in a 20th or 21st century novel rather than an early 17th century work. Language Outreach and Opportunities for Kids (L.O.O.K) is a Cal Poly student coordinated community service program enhancing the San Luis Obispo community by organizing student led lesson plans at local elementary schools. The program focuses on introducing different cultures and languages through bilingual education. Partnering with L.O.O.K for my senior project will allow me to format unique and interactive lesson plans that focus primarily on the acquisition of a second language through music. The lesson plans will be enhanced by the use of bilingual songs as an integral component of each lesson.

Variationist Approaches: External Factors Conditioning Variation In Spanish Phonology, Antonio Medina-Rivera

This chapter will focus on the external factors conditioning phonological variation. I will introduce the traditional factors to analyze social variation (e.g. sex, age, social class) and stylistic variation (careful vs. casual speech), as well as other possible factors not fully explored in Spanish. These other factors are mostly inspired by Allan Bell's model of language style as audience design (1984), and Rickford and McNair-Knox's incorporation of addressee and topic of conversation as two important factors to analyze variation (1994).

One of the most salient features of contemporary Spanish fiction is the solid participation of women in literary creation, particularly that of novels. While in the 1970s there were isolated figures, in the 80s and with the consolidation of democracy, the number grew sharply; in the 90s, they multiplied their presence and their quality continues to be outstanding. In spite of the prejudices of sexist power, a good segment of the critics accepts that today a wider and more valuable group of female novelists has been capable of constructing themes, techniques and discourses differing from the predominant one. Before the Jesuit Francisco de Florencia was able to publish the History of the Province (1694) he was forced to remove several chapters from the second book of the first volume. The section that was cut out of his manuscript reviews the errors of ancient theories on the environment of the New World, the greatness of Mexico City before the Spanish conquest, and the natural abundance of New Spain. This document is extremely valuable because it demonstrates how colonial historians were restricted by state censorship in what they were able to publish on America. Cautiverio y convivencia en la edad de Cervantes [Captivity and Coexistence in the Age of Cervantes] explores Spanish narratives of coexistence in Muslim and Native American lands, through the lens of captivity in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Far from engaging with the violence or trauma of confinement, the author studies the cognitive experience that results from abrupt immersion in a foreign culture, which leads to a revision of homogeneous and stereotypical perceptions of cultural, religious and ethnic differences, and ultimately undermines the perception of one’s own society as a stable world. The aim of this thesis is to explore how Esther Tusquets' "Carta a la madre" can be viewed as an evolution of Elia's emotional struggles in her search for forgiveness and closure with her mother in El mismo mar de todos los veranos, and explain why Tusquets would chose to reintroduce these characters (or slight variations of them) to readers close to twenty years later. This thesis examines the literary works of María de Zayas y Sotomayor called the Desengaños amorosos (1647) and the message these works suggest about life choices for women in sixteenth and seventeenth century Spain. In these novellas, María de Zayas makes a connection to the actual life of noblewomen both in the convent and outside of it. Her writing suggests through virtual and narrated experience that life in the convent allows for greater self actualization than life as a married woman. For the female characters in Desengaños amorosos, María de Zayas often utilized the convent as the superior alternative to …

This dissertation examines the role of women prisoners during the Spanish Civil war (1936-1939) and the Francoist regime (1939-1975) as represented in different literary genres such as the testimonio (testimonial narrative), autobiography and the fiction novel. In the first chapter, I analyze the concept of womanhood created by Francisco Franco 's regime through the person of Pilar Primo de Rivera. This project is a fictional novella which manipulates the boundaries of identity and time in order to explore the ways in which and to what extent one depends upon the other. Because society converts time into a fixed entity of measurement for practicality’s sake, one of the attempts of this novella is to foreground the ambiguity of time so as to illustrate that the confinements that society has placed upon it are not characteristics of time itself. Being both a librarian and an archivist/curator, it is one of my jobs to find ways to embed primary sources into my library instruction. This paper discuss the ways that I have found to integrate the Latin American and Caribbean archival holdings that I manage in the Thomas J. Dodd Research Center into my library services. I will discuss briefly some of the strategies, such as digitization projects, LibGuides and Show and Tells events, that I have used to bridge my archival work with my library work to provide better services to my constituents.

“Looking Back and Moving Forward” is a captivative short documentary that captures the essence of Samana, Dominican Republic, home to a sizeable African American population for nearly two centuries. This community, grounded in faith, has undergone many changes over the past two hundred years.

In the film, documentarian Stephanie Claytor sets out to explore these changes, such as switching the language in the schools and churches from English to Spanish, and the transformation of the economy from agriculture to tourism.
