In biblical literature, the devil serves as an archetype of evil. He appears as a deceptive serpent, a roaring lion and a vanquished dragon. Each one of the great charlatan’s faces serves to add levels of meaning to this complex character. Like biblical authors, Hispanic authors have incorporated this archetype in their own literary works in distinct ways, taking advantage of its complexity and levels of meaning. During the Middle Ages in Spain, Gonzalo de Berceo incorporated the devil as a figure of deception and enmity in Los milagros de Nuestra Señora. Two centuries later, in the Spanish baroque …

Food has a dual physical and sociocultural relationship to human life. This duality positions images of food as uniquely powerful when subverted in literary or aesthetic representations for the purpose of evoking what Joyce Carol Oates (1998) calls “aesthetic fear.” Drawing on symbolism primarily from Classical mythology, Western European fairy tales, American horror movies, and resistance poetry from the Spanish Civil War, this paper explores four symbolic subversions of the food chain (when hunters are hunted; bloodthirsty plants; cannibalism; and hunger). With particular attention to gender roles and natural life cycles, these narratives illuminate the ways in which food symbolism …

In 1593, the Judge Mateo Alemán was in charge of inspecting the quicksilver mines of Almadén in Spain to report on the situation of its workers, prisoners of the Crown, and galley men forced to work in the mercury exploitation. After one month of work, the assignment was cancelled, Alemán was forced to retire from his research, and his work was lost in the archives of the Habsburgs. A few years later, in 1598, Alemán published his famous best seller, El Guzmán de Alfarache.

Propuestas para (re)construir una nación explores how Emilia Pardo Bazán (1851–1921) imagines and engenders the Spanish nation in her theatrical production staged and/or published between 1898 and 1909. In the aftermath of Spain’s colonial losses, when Spain’s male authors, in a growing mood of collective introspection, directed their attention to the homeland, Pardo Bazán generated a series of theatrical proposals to revitalize the nation. En este ensayo se explica cómo Miquel de Palol, con la publicación del Jardí dels set crepuscles (1989), culmina la evolución de la novelística popular catalana de la década de los setenta y ochenta. La novela a partir de elementos narratológicos y simbólicos queda intelectualizada al situar el escenario en un ambiente de ficción especulativa pos apocalíptico. Finalmente, se ofrece una interpretación novedosa bajo la figura de un narrador “loco” que justifica ese carácter intelectualizante del Jardí.

This dissertation analyzes how the protagonists of Don Quixote and The Tempest perform the act of reading. It explores how the authors create interpretive communities within their works and bring them into conflict in order to foreground the dysfunctionality of particular types of reading. While functional readers are capable of reading among and beyond diverse interpretive communities, dysfunctional readers operate within a single community to the exclusion of other possible interpretations. Considering this myth as one of the most known traditional narratives of the American continent, I begin by providing visual, ethnohistorical and ethnographical insights of weeping in Mesoamerica and South America and the specific mention of a weeping woman in some Spanish chronicles to say how western values were stablished in “the new continent” through this legend. This article analyzes and compares two plays that have received little attention by scholars: Máter dolorosa (1904), by Leopoldo Cano, and El Tenorio modernista (1906,) by Pablo Parellada. These plays are a parody of the modernist style that dominated Spanish and Spanish American literature from 1888 -when it was started by the publication of Azul, a compilation of poems and stories written by Rubén Darío- to 1920 or so. This study logically continues my previous examination of the perception of Don Quixote in Russia throughout the early twentieth century and how this perception changed over time. In this new article, which will be the third in a sequence of five, I will again use a number of materials inaccessible to English-speaking scholars to demonstrate how the perception of Don Quixote by Russian intelligentsia shifted from being skeptical to complete admiration and even glorification of the hero. This work exposes the narrative silence as the main enunciator of the textual discourse in Juan Rulfo's novel, Pedro Paramo. Through a sociological reading, the literary silences comprised in the events are interpreted to access one of the multiple possible meanings of the story. The study inserts ideas, historical facts and human, social, psychological and material factors in the openings left by the author, thus producing a discourse that shapes the manifesto of contemporary life.
