Places Beyond Memory: The Affective Landscapes Of Bernardo Atxaga's Días De Nevada, Mark Pleiss

This study highlights a heretofore-unexplored narrative device in Bernardo Atxaga’s fiction by highlighting how the author’s representation of spaces surrounding Reno and the Great Basin in Días de Nevada models what Berberich et al. (2016) call affective landscapes. The approach contributes to, and looks beyond, the traditional focus on memory in criticism of Atxaga, and it illustrates the story’s engagement with the emotional experiences of populations in the North American West that are not explored or rarely treated in the author’s other works. Often considered articulations of in-between-ness and bearers of fraught selfhoods, the work of Spanish-Maghrebi authors has been widely debated in literary fields, with academics arguing that it constitutes a largely homogenous set of texts about the standard immigrant experience. However, by placing these texts in a single category, such arguments end up erasing the immensely varied identities expressed and represented by Spanish-Maghrebi authors. This thesis seeks to address this issue by paying particular attention to how Spanish-Maghrebi authors negotiate different types of immigrant subjectivities in their writing. This thesis focusses on the new Latin-American short story; the ‘obvious and external horror’ vs. the ‘real and internal horror’ found in the works of Maria Fernanda Ampuero: Pelea de gallos (2018) and Grita (2020) as well as in Monica Ojeda’s Las voladoras (2020). The analysis encompasses situations that different protagonists experience in each short story to illustrate the message that the Ecuadorian writers intend to address the reader. The turn of the century was a period of rapid change and modernization. Spain, unlike neighboring European nations, was collapsing as an imperial force. The ensuing crisis of national identity fueled existing political tensions from the early nineteenth century which would lead to the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939). This thesis examines various national crises from 1890 and the decade preceding the loss of Spain’s final colonies to 1929 and the decade preceding the Civil War. In this dissertation I put Posthumanist theory in tension with the ‘lived’ experiences of the posthuman protagonists of two recent Science Fiction trilogies. My aim in doing so is to uncover the shortcomings of Posthumanist accounts of ethics and discover alternative paths forward.

The first chapter of my dissertation is an overview of Posthumanist theory and Science Fiction, with a particular emphasis on the contributions Hispanic authors and women have made to the genre. This dissertation analyzes fantastic short fiction in terms of its relationship to the traditionalist and progressive forces that were vying for hegemonic control over Spanish national identity in the ever-changing period of the nineteenth century, demonstrating how these powers shaped Spain’s past and future national character to suit ideologically driven narratives and revealing how fantastic literature can disrupt these narratives to unlock new patterns of thought. Este artículo analiza la novela En la gloria de aquel amanecer (1937), de María Sepúlveda, y explora cómo durante la guerra civil española transmitió propagandísticamente la ideología franquista del sacrificio por la patria y un modelo de género tradicional, con papeles claramente diferenciados entre hombres y mujeres. Así, mientras los hombres se alistan al ejército sublevado, confirmando su masculinidad y sacrificando voluntariamente su vida por la patria, las mujeres abandonan su independencia conectada a la Segunda República y adoptan el papel de madres y esposas abnegadas.

This research focuses on the type of hegemonic masculinity—a term that has traditionally belonged to a purely sociology domain—exhorted in the works of fiction published and released in Spain in the last two decades, searching for patterns that indicate that a normative type is encouraged. After tracing the different types of hegemonic masculinities that have characterized policemen since the late 30’s, the findings show how the modern notion of masculinity depicted in the works analyzed, even though it can no longer be considered monolithic, still shares some patterns with the masculinity predominant in cultural products during Francoism.

The purpose of this thesis is to shed light on the numerous authorship and dating problems presented by the Spanish Golden Age theatre. Specifically, it focuses on Lope de Vega (1562-1635), a notable and highly successful playwright of this period. Through the compilation of a wide set of texts and the application of Artificial Intelligence techniques (machine learning), a control corpus is evaluated to find the best systems and parameters. Online language teaching has become a popular alternative to classroom learning (Liu et al; Warschauer and Meskill). This led to research comparing the two learning environments (Young). Regardless of the learning environment, in order to be effective, the second language classroom must be designed to lead learners to acquisition. This article investigates the way in which Cuban literature reflected on indigenous people during the early half of the nineteenth century and uses the symbol of the Amerindians to demonstrate a moral disjuncture between them and the colonizer. In this article, I call attention to the way Cuban independentists and Spanish nationalists used this figure to support their views and thus created a split in the Cuban creole imagination. This paper explores the concepts of "Border Culture" and "Borderlands" by Gloria Anzaldúa in Soy la Avon Lady and Other Stories, Homicide Survivors Picnic and Other Stories, by Lorraine López and the novel Mijito Doesn’t Live Here Anymore by Jaime Martínez. The paper argues that the Mexican American character in the southeast of the United States lives in the "Borderlands" and practices a "Border Culture" because they don't follow the traditional stereotypical role of the Mexican American character within the literary canon of both the dominant culture and Chicana/o literature.

El presente trabajo tiene como objetivos el análisis de algunas características de la memoria en la novela El ruido de las cosas al caer de Juan Gabriel Vásquez, establecer vínculos entre la novela y la narrativa de la sicaresca colombiana y caracterizar el trauma experimentado por algunos de sus personajes. Se trata de una novela con características que la incluyen dentro de la ficción contemporánea colombiana que a su vez forma parte de la sicaresca: un concepto clave sobre violencia, criminalidad, derechos humanos y narcotráfico expresados en la novela colombiana.

There is a well-recognised close relationship between creative and juridical writings. At times, authors of creative texts adapt juridical elements in the form of minor details, or broad thematic bases, so as to create convincing fictional realities. Alternatively, they use the same aspects to comment on socio-juridical problems in an ambiguous or ironic fashion. This study focuses on the history of these processes and, specifically, on certain key examples in the works of Miguel de Cervantes, seen in relation to multiple legal documents, including a late sixteenth-century manuscript that details punishments for erotic crimes.

The various individual methods utilized by Hernán Cortés have been previously documented by multiple scholars. However, while the “tools” Cortés used—such as a reliance on legal precedent and religious allusions in the tradition of conquest rhetoric—to craft his narrative have been dissected, the use of those tools to create a narrative in letter format has not been discussed as much if at all by these scholars. While Cortés utilized previously established literary devices to prove his loyalty, his narrative was only as effective as it was because of his decision to place it in a literary format.
