Concerts are often the summative project for the elementary music room. However, the emphasis on concerts creates challenges for music instruction. The preparation for a traditional concert often takes away from instructional time, which is already limited for music instruction. Second, the use of concerts conceals many aspects of the instructional process from students’ families. This results in a limited view and understanding of their child’s formal musical education. This narrative case study examines the perceptions of three professional musicians on the impact of focused aural experiences (FAEs) in developing their musicianship. The participants include a professional instrumental performer, the director of a non-profit jazz school, and a retired high school band teacher. Each participant has engaged in performing, teaching, composing, arranging, and/or conducting in some capacity at various stages of their careers. The research explores the roles that focused aural experiences may have had in shaping each individual’s musical development by examining their perceptions of the impacts of such experiences on their overall musicianship. Musicians have engaged in visual self-representation at least since the Renaissance and have continued the tradition to modern times with contemporary practices including selfies and generative technology and AI art. The practitioners include so-called classical composers (Schoenberg is a well-known case) and performers (Caruso, for instance), but also pop singers and musicians (Joni Mitchell and Patti Smith, among others). The media used varies from oil on canvas to drawings on paper, from traditional photography to digital media. In some instances, there are grave, pompous self-representations, but caricatures also abound (e.g., Donizetti). There are also some miscategorized self-portraits (i.e., portraits …

When Harald Bode nominally invented the modular synthesiser in 1960, it was not yet clear whether it was a musical instrument or a less-defined form of studio-sited audio technology (Subotnik 1970). Much of the technology, from the interface design to the specific parts, was shared with nonmusical test and measurement equipment. His works are unique because of the diverse mixing of styles due to the interculturalism present in his music. In the program notes of his Hebreische Milonga, Golijov mentions that this piece can connect his Argentinian and Jewish roots as well as the influence of Astor Piazzolla’s music. When participating in the religious tradition of Ramadan, the body is subject to changes that adjust an athlete's regimented dietary intake. The guiding systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted to gather the results of the limited research on the effect of Ramadan observance on body mass, body composition, and dietary intake in adolescent athletes. Data were extracted from two different databases, and a search through several journals exploring body mass and/or body composition and/or dietary intake was conducted. The purpose of this multicase, qualitative study dissertation was to describe how the leadership characteristics of the founders of the Music Educators National Conference (MENC) inform today’s music educators’ leadership abilities. During the 1907 Keokuk conference the founding members discussed the first set of guiding principles for various subjects within the music discipline including chorus, band, and piano. For this study, the research questions are focused on the similarities in leadership styles of music education leaders past and present. Suggestions for improvement of teacher and administrator leadership characteristics were revealed by the leaders themselves.

This study collected a representative sample of current grade 6-12 school orchestra directors' incorporation of alternative styles in the curriculum. It examined directors' repertoire selection process and their potential influence on student engagement, motivation, and retention, with a specific interest in alternative styles. Alternative styles in string education that are included in this study are contemporary pop, folk, bluegrass, rock, Irish fiddle, jazz, and world music. Dance is a universal human behavior and a crucial component of human musicality. When and how does the motivation and tendency to move to music develop? How does this behavior change as a process of maturation and learning? We characterize infants’ earliest dance behavior, leveraging parents’ extensive at-home observations of their children. Parents of infants aged 0–24 months (N = 278, 82.7% White, 84.5% in the United States, 46.0% of household incomes ≥ $100,000) were surveyed regarding their child’s current and earliest dance behavior (movement by the child, during music, that the parent considered dance), motor development, and their …

The purpose of this study was to investigate the formation of music preference in an effort to identify specific ages when preferred music is likely to be discovered. One hundred one individuals participated in an online survey, answering questions about their listening habits, music preferences, and the social elements that contributed most to those preferences. Participants were asked to identify their current, second, and third favorite music at the time of the study and whether their preferences had changed over time. Singing is often used in music therapy sessions. It can provide physiological, psychological, and interpersonal benefits, and music therapists use it to address clinical goals including improved blood oxygenation, emotional expression, and increased interpersonal engagement between clients and their family members. Singing uniquely combines musicality, the body as the instrument, and meaningful words. Furthermore, the voice is a personal instrument, which makes musical engagement accessible to many people. The purpose of this study was to determine if a short video presentation, about music therapy in behavioral health, had a positive effect on staff members’ beliefs about music therapy in that setting. A total of 26 staff members, from different departments, participated in the study and completed a pre- and post-presentation questionnaire. Responses were analyzed and compared to investigate whether the video had a positive effect on staff members’ beliefs about music therapy in behavioral health. Worship of the goddess Padmāvatī emerged more than a thousand years ago. This article explores three songs about her in Gujarati by Paṇḍit Vīrvijayajī (1773-1852). By analyzing the style and form of his work, one learns a great deal about devotional liturgies that commemorate goddess Padmāvatī’s protection of the Jina Pārśvanātha and, in turn, his protection of her.

Two strong women are compared and contrasted in this article. Gond Rani Durgawati (1524-1564) led a resistance movement in Jabalpur against the Mughal rule of Akbar. Rani Lakshmibai (1828-1858) organized the people of Jhansi against Sir Hugh Rose, an officer defending the interests of the British East India Company. Both women continue to be remembered for their bravery and their loyalty to the people they ruled.

Mai Bhago (1670-1720), also known as Bhag Kaur, distinguished herself on the battlefield to defend the Sikh faith. Amrita Devi Bishnoi (d. 1730) is said to have sacrificed her life with 362 others to protect the Khejari trees in the Rajasthan desert. Both women continue to inspire social justice and ecological activism.

Mahatma Gandhi (1869-1948) sought to alleviate poverty and empower women. His commitment to nonviolence and the economic ideal of “small is beautiful” continue to inspire grassroots movements around the globe. This article discusses the Chipko movement of northern India, the protection of rain forests in Kerala’s Silent Valley, the Self Employed Women’s Association (SEWA), and Medha Patkar’s valiant though ultimately futile attempt to save the Narmada River from a massive government damming project. The ongoing legacy of these movements can be found in AWAG, the Ahmedabad Women’s Action Group and Women’s Shanti Sena (Peace Force).

Indigenous Stitch-Arts Of India: Tradition And Revival In A Global Age, Punam Madhok

Stitch art allows for the creative expression and economic support of countless women throughout India. This article examines four notable styles: chikankari, flora and fauna stitched in white thread on fine white cotton, rabari, the stitching of mirrors into colorful cloth, phulkari, resplendent flowery motifs sewn into shawls in Punjab, and kantha, Bengali patch work yielding quilts and seating mats. In addition to describing each technique, this article discusses how women have been economically empowered through this art by such organizations as Self-Help Enterprise (SHE) in Kolkata and Adithi, a women’s cooperative, in Bihar.

วิทยานิพนธ์นี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษามูลบทของการบรรเลงซออู้เพลงกราวในสำหรับการเดี่ยวและการแสดงโขนตอนขับพิเภก เพื่อศึกษากลวิธีการบรรเลงซออู้เพลงกราวในสำหรับการเดี่ยวและการแสดงโขน ตอนขับพิเภก ของครูสุริยะ ชิตท้วม โดยใช้ระเบียบวิธีวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพ ผลการศึกษาพบว่า การบรรเลงเดี่ยวเพลงกราวในเกิดขึ้นในสมัยรัตนโกสินทร์ตอนต้น ครูปี่พาทย์ประดิษฐ์ทางเดี่ยวเพลงกราวในขึ้นบรรเลงในอัตราจังหวะสามชั้น ภายหลังจึงเกิดเดี่ยวกราวในสำหรับเครื่องสาย ทางเดี่ยวซออู้เพลงกราวในของครูสุริยะ ชิตท้วมเป็นทางของหลวงไพเราะเสียงซอ (อุ่น ดูรยะชีวิน) ที่ได้ถ่ายทอดให้แก่ครูวรยศ ศุขสายชลและครูธีระ ภู่มณีตามลำดับ กลวิธีการบรรเลงซออู้เดี่ยวกราวใน พบว่า ใช้กลุ่มเสียงปัญจมูลทั้งหมด 4 กลุ่มเสียง ได้แก่ ทางนอก ทางใน ทางกลางแหบ และทางชวา มีการบรรเลงลูกโยนเสียงทั้งหมด 6 เสียงในการประดิษฐ์ลูกโยน พบการใช้กลวิธีพิเศษจำนวน 14 กลวิธี ส่วนการบรรเลงเดี่ยวซออู้เพลงกราวในสำหรับการแสดงโขนเรื่องรามเกียรติ์ ตอนขับพิเภก ของครูสุริยะ ชิตท้วม ที่ได้รับการถ่ายทอดมาจากครูธีระ ภู่มณี บรรเลงเพียงโยนเดียว เสียงโด โดยใช้วิธีการโอด การครวญ และบรรเลงโดยไม่มีเครื่องกำกับจังหวะ จนกระทั่งพิเภกได้พบกับทหารของพระราม จากนั้นจึงจะบรรเลงด้วยทางเก็บและสิ้นสุดการบรรเลงเพลงกราวในเมื่อตัวลิงรำป้องหน้า พบการใช้กลวิธีที่ใช้จำนวน 12 กลวิธี
