David Maslanka (1943–2017) was a prolific American composer who wrote most frequently for the medium of concert band/wind ensemble. His music is frequently performed by ensembles around the world. Due to his more intuitive and idiosyncratic compositional style, Maslanka would center what he described as the “emotional line” of the work, certain aspects of his music are undetected by traditional analytical models. Formal Emotive Intensity Analysis bridges that gap to focus on the supposed emotional line within Maslanka’s work. Etudes, which initially appeared in the seventeenth century as small collections of exercises, have evolved into significant concert pieces, showcasing the development of virtuosity over time. This study compiles a selected catalog of piano etudes from the mid-20th century to the 21st century, accompanied by brief biographies of each composer. Beginning with a historical overview of piano etudes, this paper catalogs etudes by 50 composers, divided into two chapters that respectively present etudes from the 1940s–1980s and the 1980s–2020s, listed alphabetically by the composer's last name. Unlike other instruments, the harp was not used in chamber ensembles before the twentieth century. When it did start appearing in chamber ensembles, it was usually within programmatic works, non-traditional forms, unconventional instrument combinations, and mostly in France. At the same time, the harp began emerging as a chamber ensemble instrument, and a new genre of chamber music appeared: the chamber tone poem. Choral Students’ Perception Of Kinesthetic Pedagogy In The High School Choral Classroom, Molly Bolewski

This study examines the incorporation of kinesthetic pedagogy in secondary choral rehearsals and its impact on student engagement and learning. Three experienced high school choral teachers and their students from Northern California participated in the study. Each teacher conducted four consecutive rehearsal sessions, recording themselves instructing on two pieces of music using teacher-modeled and student-imitated kinesthetic gestures. Students completed daily surveys assessing their enjoyment and engagement levels, and teachers provided a final reflection on their usual kinesthetic practices. Video footage of twelve rehearsals and teachers’ final reflections were analyzed to identify patterns in kinesthetic usage, revealing that these teachers’ kinesthetic …

This research paper presents suggestions for the incorporation of piano literature and performance practice courses into university curricula. The prevalence of piano literature in American universities is examined, highlighting the necessity to promote its inclusion in Chinese universities. The significance of piano literature and performance practice courses for piano performance students is explored for both undergraduate and graduate programs. Included are selected readings and detailed sample syllabi of potential courses to be offered by college and university music programs.

Country music has long overlooked and at times outright erased the contributions of people of African descent. The past and present contributions of Black women are particularly ignored. Country music— a racially contested space centered in Nashville, Tennessee— is imbued with themes referencing the “good ole days” that were dangerous times for anyone who was not White, male, cisgender, and heterosexual. The genre has only become slightly more welcoming to those who are not part of the dominant class. And yet, there are Black women who feel called to use country music as their storytelling medium. Professional musicians with strong identities in music may also have a high degree of music in their identities. Accordingly, a rigid identification with work may be problematic for musicians, particularly when forces beyond their control change their work circumstances. In this study, we conducted semi-structured interviews with 10 singing teachers, representing a subset of professional musicians, and used interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) to explore the ways in which they enacted music in their identities. The framework of musical identities in action was used to interpret the findings, revealing the dynamic, embodied, and situated complexity of music in participants’ identities. Music …

The book describes the historical context for the Scaramouche tragic pantomime created by Poul Knudsen and Jean Sibelius in 1913. The pantomime had numerous productions in various European countries between 1922 and 1977, and the book examines all of them according to all available evidence. The text explains the historical and cultural significance of the pantomime and how it uniquely explores a dark and complex intersection of female sexuality, marriage, and class control of erotic desire. Musical ekphrasis, as defined by musicologist Siglind Bruhn (2001), refers to musical compositions that transform, re-create, or ‘re-present’ a work of visual art or poetry. Though there exists a significant body of musical works that are based on visual art and poetry, there is a distinct lack of research and documentation on musical ekphrasis, particularly in the field of jazz and improvised music. This project examines the music of Istanbul-born British classical guitarist and composer Gilbert Biberian (1944-2023) and the potential of this music to stimulate original composition using an intuitive approach. งานวิจัยเรื่องกรรมวิธีการสร้างปินของพ่อครูอินส่วย มูลทา มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อ ศึกษามูลบทที่เกี่ยวข้องกับปิน ศึกษากรรมวิธีการสร้างปินของพ่อครูอินส่วย มูลทา ประเมินคุณภาพเสียง ปินของพ่อครูอินส่วย มูลทา โดยใช้ระเบียบวิธีวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพ วิทยานิพนธ์เรื่องกรรมวิธีการสร้างปินของพ่อครูอินส่วย มูลทา มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษา มูลบทที่เกี่ยวข้องกับปิน ศึกษากรรมวิธีการสร้างปินของพ่อครูอินส่วย มูลทา และประเมินคุณภาพเสียงปินของพ่อครูอินส่วย มูลทา ผลการวิจัยพบว่าพ่อครูอินส่วย มูลทา เป็นศิลปินและช่างสร้างเครื่องดนตรีในจังหวัดน่าน มีประสบการณ์สร้างปินผ่านการทดลองและสังเกตปินของศิลปินหลาย ๆ ท่าน จากการศึกษากรรมวิธีการสร้างปินของพ่อครูอินส่วย มูลทา พบว่ามีความพิถีพิถันและมีความใส่ใจในทุกขั้นตอน พบปัจจัยที่ส่งผลต่อลักษณะทางกายภาพของปิน 8 ขั้นตอนคือ การคัดเลือกไม้ การร่างแบบตามกระสวนครั้งที่ 1 การร่างแบบตามกระสวนครั้งที่ 2 การผ่าเปิดตาดปิน การเจาะรูลมกระพุ้ง การทำหย่อง การทำก๊อบ และการติดก๊อบ อีกทั้งยังพบปัจจัยที่ส่งผลต่อคุณภาพเสียงของปิน 6 ขั้นตอน คือ การคัดเลือกไม้ การร่างแบบกระสวนครั้งที่ 1 การผ่าเปิดตาดปิน การเจาะกระพุ้งและหัวปิน การเจาะรูลมกระพุ้ง และการตั้งเสียง พบลักษณะเฉพาะที่ปรากฏอยู่ในกรรมวิธีการสร้างปินของพ่อครูอินส่วย มูลทา คือ 1. การนำลูกบิดกีตาร์มาใช้แทนลูกบิดแบบดั้งเดิมเป็นคนแรกของจังหวัดน่าน 2. การบากร่องส่วนหัวเพื่อใส่เรซิ่นสำหรับรองสายกันสึก 3.ลวดลายของรูลมทรงหยดน้ำคู่ จากการประเมินปินของพ่อครูอินส่วย มูลทา โดยผู้ทรงคุณวุฒิทั้ง 7 ท่าน พบว่าความเห็นของผู้ทรงคุณวุฒิทั้ง 7 ท่าน มีความพ้องกันว่าทั้งลักษณะทางกายภาพ และคุณภาพเสียงปินของพ่อครูอินส่วย มูลทา มีมาตรฐานที่ดี คือมีลักษณะทางกายภาพของปินสวยงาม สัดส่วนถูกต้อง รูปทรงดีมาก และลักษณะเสียงของปิน ดังกังวาน เสียงใส ไม่มีเสียงแหบ ไม่มีเสียงเพี้ยน

งานวิจัยเรื่องสารัตถะเพลงครอบจักรวาลกับการสร้างทำนองซอสามสายของ รองศาสตราจารย์พิชิต ชัยเสรี มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาวิธีการสร้างทำนองซอสามสาย และ เพื่อศึกษากลวิธีการแปรทำนองซอสามสายจากทำนองทางฆ้องกรณีศึกษาเพลงครอบจักรวาล ผลการวิจัยพบว่า สามารถสร้างทำนองซอสามสายได้โดยวิธีการ 4 ขั้นตอน ดังนี้ (1.) การแปลทำนองฆ้องเป็นทำนองซอสามสาย (Translation) โดยวิธีการถอดทำนองฆ้องเป็นทำนองสารัตถะ จากนั้นพิจารณาทิศทางการดำเนินของทำนองใน 3 รูปแบบคือ วิถีขึ้น (Way Up) วิถีลง (Way Down) และวิถีคงที่ (Stand Still) สามารถแปลทำนองได้เป็น 2 ลักษณะ คือการแปลอย่างจาว (Thin Texture) และการแปลอย่างเก็บ (Thick Texture) (2.) การแปรทำนองซอสามสาย (Variation) ให้เกิดความหลากหลายของทำนองออกไปจากทำนองอย่างเดิม (3.) การผูกสำนวนทำนอง (Combination) เรียงร้อยสำนวนทำนองระหว่างมือฆ้องเข้าไว้ด้วยกันโดยใช้ความรู้จากการแปลและการแปรทำนอง (4.) การสร้างสรรค์ทำนอง (Creativity) ใช้ความรู้จากทั้ง 3 ขั้นตอนที่ได้กล่าวมารวมทั้งประสบการณ์ในการสร้างทำนองใหม่เพื่อให้เกิดทำนองซอสามสายที่ดีและไพเราะน่าฟัง กลวิธีการแปรทำนองซอสามสาย เสนอไว้ 3 ประการ ประการแรก เสียงซ้ำให้หลีกหนีประการที่สอง เพิ่มเสียงตามกลุ่มเสียงและสร้างความถี่ของโน้ต และประการสุดท้าย ทำความผันแปรของทิศทางการดำเนินทำนอง

บทประพันธ์เพลงระดับมหาบัณฑิต : “ก้าวย่างสู่นิพพาน” สำหรับวงแจ๊ส เป็นบทประพันธ์ที่ได้รับแรงบันดาลใจจากดนตรีบลูส์และดนตรีแจ๊สที่ผู้ประพันธ์มีความสนใจ ซึ่งดนตรีบลูส์และดนตรีแจ๊สมีอิทธิพลต่อผู้ประพันธ์ในแง่มุมของความอิสระที่จะแสดงคีตปฏิภาณภายใต้จังหวะต่าง ๆ ซึ่งวางไว้เป็นกรอบหลวม ๆ ที่เปิดโอกาสให้นักดนตรีสามารถแสดงคีตปฏิภาณโดยมีแบบแผนของดนตรีแจ๊สภายใต้กรอบของเสียงประสานที่วางไว้ บทประพันธ์เพลง : “ก้าวย่างสู่นิพพาน” สำหรับวงแจ๊ส แบ่งออกเป็น 3 ตอน รวมเวลาในการบรรเลง 15 นาที โดยแต่ละตอนมีชื่อเรียกดังนี้ ก้าวแรก ก้าวต่อ และปัจจุบันขณะ ก้าวแรกเปรียบกับดนตรีบลูส์ที่ถือว่าเป็นรากฐานสำคัญสำหรับดนตรีแจ๊ส ก้าวต่อเปรียบกับดนตรีแจ๊สที่ได้รับพัฒนาจากนักดนตรีที่มีความรู้มากขึ้นและปัจจุบันขณะเปรียบกับตัวผู้ประพันธ์ที่ได้ผสมผสาน เปรียบกับตัวผู้ประพันธ์ผสมผสานองค์ความรู้ที่ได้ศึกษามานำมาสร้างสรรค์ในการประพันธ์ โดยผู้ประพันธ์ได้ใช้เทคนิค เช่น การเลียน จังหวะขัด การคัดการดำเนินคอร์ด และเทคนิคอื่น ๆ มาใช้ในการประพันธ์เพลง แรงบันดาลใจจากพุทธศาสนา ก้าวแรกเปรียบกับการประสูติ ก้าวต่อเปรียบกับตรัสรู้ และปัจจุบันขณะเปรียบกับการปริพนิพาน

งานวิจัยเรื่อง อัตลักษณ์ทางดนตรีของทำนองจะเข้ในบทเพลงประเภททางพื้นของ ครูนิภา อภัยวงศ์ วัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษามูลบทที่เกี่ยวข้องกับการถ่ายทอดการบรรเลงจะเข้ของ ครูนิภา อภัยวงศ์และศึกษาอัตลักษณ์ของทำนองจะเข้ในบทเพลงประเภททางพื้นของครูนิภา อภัยวงศ์ ผลการวิจัยพบว่า ในด้านการถ่ายทอดการบรรเลงจะเข้ของครูนิภา อภัยวงศ์ ครูมีการถ่ายทอดให้กับลูกศิษย์ 2 กลุ่ม คือ กลุ่มนักศึกษาที่ชมรมดนตรีไทย มหาวิทยาลัยรามคำแหงและกลุ่มลูกศิษย์ส่วนตัวที่มาศึกษาที่บ้าน โดยครูมีการคัดเลือกลูกศิษย์ทุกคนก่อนทำการถ่ายทอด การถ่ายทอดใช้วิธีการนอยปากและสาธิตการดีดให้ดู ไม่มีการใช้โน้ตเพลง เริ่มสอนตั้งแต่พื้นฐานการพันไม้ดีด การใช้ไม้ดีด โดยเริ่มต่อเพลงตั้งแต่ตับต้นเพลงฉิ่งสามชั้นไปจบด้วยเพลงเดี่ยวขั้นสูง โดยพิจารณาให้เหมาะสมตามความสามารถของผู้เรียน สอนลูกศิษย์ด้วยความเมตตาทำให้เกิดความผูกพันเป็นอย่างมากระหว่างครูและศิษย์ ในด้านอัตลักษณ์ของทำนองจะเข้พบว่าการแปรทำนองจะเข้มี 8 รูปแบบ ได้แก่ 1. การดำเนินทำนองแบบเรียงเสียง 2. การดำเนินทำนองแบบสับทำนองสลับเสียงสูงต่ำ 3. การดำเนินทำนองแบบย้ำเสียงเดิม 4. การดำเนินทำนองโดดเสียงขึ้น 3 และ 4 เสียง 5. การดำเนินทำนองแบบหักเสียงโดยฉับพลัน 6. การดำเนินทำนองแบบยอกย้อนทำนอง 7. การดำเนินทำนองแบบฝากทำนอง และ 8. การดำเนินทำนองโดยการใช้กลวิธีต่าง ๆ ของจะเข้แทรกอยู่ในทำนอง เม็ดพรายของทำนองจะเข้มี 3 รูปแบบ ได้แก่ 1. การสะบัด 2. การใช้สายลวด และ 3. การบรรเลงไม่ซ้ำทำนอง

วิทยานิพนธ์เรื่องกลวิธีการเป่าปี่ชวาในบทเพลงเพื่อการแสดงอาวุธของครูปี๊บ คงลายทอง (ศิลปินแห่งชาติ) เป็นงานวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพ มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาบทเพลงเพื่อการแสดงอาวุธและกลวิธีการเป่าปี่ชวาในบทเพลงเพื่อการแสดงอาวุธ ผลการวิจัยพบว่า บทเพลงเพื่อการแสดงอาวุธมีจำนวน 6 บทเพลง ได้แก่ เพลงกระบี่ลีลา สองชั้น เพลงโยนดาบ สองชั้น เพลงมอญรำดาบ สองชั้น เพลงโลม สองชั้น และเพลงลงสรง สองชั้น เพลงสองชั้นใช้สำหรับไหว้ครูประจำแต่ละอาวุธ และเพลงโยน-แปลง ใช้สำหรับทุกการแสดงในช่วงเดินแปลงและเข้าต่อสู้ กลวิธีการเป่าปี่ชวาในบทเพลงเพื่อการแสดงอาวุธจะต้องปรับกลุ่มเสียงเพื่อให้ปี่ชวาดำเนินทำนองได้สะดวกทั้งการใช้นิ้วและการใช้ลม อีกทั้งเพื่อให้พบทำนองที่เอื้อต่ออารมณ์ให้มีความฮึกเหิม เพลงที่จะต้องปรับกลุ่มเสียง ได้แก่ เพลงโยนดาบ สองชั้น เพลงมอญรำดาบ สองชั้น เพลงโลม สองชั้น เพลงลงสรง สองชั้น และเพลงที่ไม่ต้องปรับกลุ่มเสียง ได้แก่ เพลงกระบี่ลีลา สองชั้น นอกจากการปรับกลุ่มเสียงเพื่อความสะดวกในการบรรเลงปี่ชวา จะต้องใช้กลวิธีพิเศษเพื่อเพิ่มอรรถรสให้แก่ทำนอง ได้แก่ การตอดลิ้นโดยเป่าลมสั้น การตอดลิ้นตัดลม การตอดลิ้นติดกัน 2 ครั้ง การตอดลมโดยเป่าลมสั้น การปริบ การโปรยเสียง การตีนิ้ว การสะบัด การรวบทำนอง และการกระทบเสียง ซึ่งกลวิธีดังกล่าวในการเป่าปี่ชวาในแต่ละบทเพลงจะต้องศึกษาแบบตัวต่อตัวเพื่อให้ได้รับองค์ความรู้ที่ถูกต้องตามแบบแผนเนื่องจากกลวิธีใช้นิ้วและลมในการเป่าปี่ชวามีรายละเอียดที่ซับซ้อน

Stroke rehabilitation focuses more on restoring function and physical ability and often overlooks the prevalence of psychological symptoms. The prevalence of depression after stroke has been reported to be between 25 and 79 percent. In addition to depression, anxiety, fatigue and apathy are common symptoms after stroke, with a significant overlap in prevalence and symptoms. Music interventions have been reported to evoke and support emotional processes and facilitate engagement in physical movement, making them valuable for stroke rehabilitation. In this article, we analyze how a music genre is reciprocally defined online, through the crowdsourced ‘facts’ of Wikipedia. What are the traditional implicit and explicit exclusionary practices in this sort of genre formation? And how can internet-specific sociabilities create new exclusionary practices in the process of defining music? By analyzing the edit history of Wikipedia’s ‘hyperpop’ page, we locate ongoing debates, controversies, and contestations that point to shaping forces around online genre formation.
