Dr. Micah Salkind is a DJ, sound designer, curator, and author of "Do You Remember House? Chicago’s Queer of Color Undergrounds" for which these oral history interviews were collected. There are 58 interviews available online with 61 people about “house music, the rhythmically focused electronic dance sound born in the post-industrial maroon spaces of Chicago's queer, black, and Latino social dancers.” The interviews are with DJs, musicians, club owners, and publishers and were completed over the course of two years, 2013-2014.

Johnson (a Los Angeles radio personality) and Grammy Award winning singer Lou Rawls. The program featured a mix of contemporary and historical music, along with interviews. The donor, Albert D. Cunningham, was the show’s principal writer and producer.

I explore the relationship between music and healing in Aotearoa New Zealand, and how healing is administered through the triadic relationship of the land, placehood, and community, using music as a vehicle for the carriage of this healing. In January of 2024, I traveled to Aotearoa New Zealand to gain a first-hand experience and account of this relationship through my own observations, and conducting interviews with Māori (the Indigenous people of Aotearoa New Zealand) individuals, and Pākehā (non-Māori) music therapists. Speech enhancement algorithms are needed for Assisted Living (AL) environments, which are characterized by large inter-microphone spacings, significant phase-wraparound, and high reverberation times (T60). We contribute Elevato- CDR, which addresses the task of enhancing speech given the large relative delays and high levels of reverberation, which are characteristic of AL scenarios. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate Elevato-CDR’s performance and compare it with benchmark reverberation schemes, using speech mixtures which experience reverberation and background noise. Our findings indicate that Elevato-CDR successfully outperforms classical dereverberation algorithms in terms of subjective (MARS, PESQ) and objective (SDR, SRR) performance measures in …

Called the “Holocaust by Bullets” by historians because of the way the Nazi’s perpetrated the killings; pulling and dragging the Jews from each village to the edge of the village, and then shooting them point blank. This thesis contains the recording and program notes of Demiana Ibrahim's Senior Recital in partial Completion of the Music major on the Performance track. The music performed is from a wide variety of composers, in addition to two transcribed from orchestral renditions by the performer herself. Beyond the composers expected in the Western canon, this performance includes music of North African origin, and highlights the first mainstream successful African American classical composer.

This qualitative study examines early career music teachers’ perceived self-efficacy following teacher practicum during a global pandemic. I conducted focus group conversations with undergraduate music education alum (N=16) from Southeastern State University (SSU) at the end of 2023. Participants described the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on their music teacher practicum and overall experiential learning at SSU. The focus group questions, and subsequent deductive coding of their answers, aligned with the four roles of Bandura’s (1977) Self-Efficacy Theory. Participants reported low perceived self-efficacy in their first year of in-service teaching, with variations based on the stages of the COVID-19 pandemic …

Recruitment and retention play a significant role in the success of high school band programs. The purpose of this study was to examine what impacted post high school graduates’ and focus group participants' final decisions about participating in their high school band program. It utilized Ajzen’s (1991) Theory of Planned Behavior and Bandura’s (1977) Self-Efficacy Theory. The life and work of many nineteenth-century women composers cannot be satisfactorily studied or understood due to a lack of documentary evidence. In the case of Alma Mahler, however, it is not a lack of manuscript materials or biographical accounts that preclude the appraisal of her legacy, but rather the sheer volume and often contradictory nature of accounts. Although her early life writing emphasized the importance of music, she later downplayed her identity as a composer and emphasized her role of patron of the arts and muse to “great men.” I would argue, however, that if biography is a tool …

Women high school band directors in the state of Iowa may experience teaching in secondary band programs differently than men high school band directors. Previous research has shown that women have faced many challenges in music education, particularly in teaching high school band. Four women band directors from different school class sizes and currently teaching in Iowa were interviewed about their teaching experiences to collect data using a qualitative case study design. My findings support the literature reviewed in suggesting that women band directors in secondary band programs in Iowa may be treated differently than men band directors by experiencing …

The purpose of this study was to examine music instruction at the California Labor School (CLS), located in San Francisco, California. This institution existed from 1942 to 1957 as a center for adult education affiliated with the Communist Party. Although the curriculum focused on Marxism and labor, the institution also offered classes in general subjects, vocational training, life skills, and the arts to enrich the lives of the immigrants, industrial workers, and people of color that it served. The music program included courses in music fundamentals, appreciation, and songwriting; group and individual instruction in voice, guitar, and piano; and ensembles …

การแสดงเดี่ยวขับร้องระดับมหาบัณฑิตโดย กมลพร คงจินดา จัดทำขึ้นภายใต้แก่นเรื่อง Moonlit Serenade: A Journey of Love โดยนำเสนอบทเพลงจำนวน 12 บท ซึ่งแบ่งออกเป็น บทเพลงอาเรีย 5 บท บทเพลงร้องศิลป์ 4 บท และบทเพลงจากละครเพลง 3 บท บทเพลงทั้งหมดถูก ร้อยเรียงเป็น 3 ช่วง ถ่ายทอดเส้นทางของความรักตั้งแต่ความสุข ความเศร้า ไปจนถึงการปล่อยวาง การเลือกบทเพลงจากหลากหลายแนวและยุคสมัย ครอบคลุมช่วงเวลาทางดนตรีและแนวทางการขับร้องที่แตกต่างกัน ส่งผลให้ผู้วิจัยได้ฝึกฝนทักษะทั้งด้านเทคนิค ตลอดจนฝึกการตีความบทเพลงตามบริบท ทางวัฒนธรรมและอารมณ์อย่างลึกซึ้ง ผ่านกระบวนการวิเคราะห์ ฝึกซ้อม และการแสดงจริง วิทยานิพนธ์ฉบับนี้จึงไม่เพียงเป็นการแสดงออกทางศิลปะ แต่ยังเป็นการเรียนรู้ที่พัฒนาความเข้าใจในบทเพลงหลากหลายประเภท ซึ่งสามารถต่อยอดในเชิงวิชาชีพด้านการขับร้องและการสอนในอนาคต

งานวิจัยเรื่อง สาระของเพลงทะแย เป็นงานวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพ มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาความสำคัญ บทบาท และหน้าที่ของเพลงทะแยทั้ง 8 บทเพลง และเพื่อศึกษาโครงสร้าง กลุ่มเสียงปัญจมูล กระสวนจังหวะของสำนวนและวิเคราะห์บทเพลงให้ปรากฏซึ่งสาระของเพลงทะแย ผลการวิจัยแบ่งเป็น 2 ส่วนคือ ส่วนที่ 1 คือ บทบาทและความสำคัญของเพลงทะแย จำแนกเป็น 4 บทบาท ได้แก่ บทบาทในพระราชพิธี ใช้เพลงทะแยกลองโยนประกอบริ้วขบวน พระเกียรติยศ บทบาทในการฝึกหัดดนตรีไทย ใช้ฝึกไล่มือ บทบาทเพื่อการแสดง เป็นการนำเพลงทะแยไปใช้ในการประกอบการแสดงและบทบาทเพื่อความบันเทิง ผลการวิจัยส่วนที่ 2 คือ สาระของเพลงทะแย แบ่งเป็น 6 ประการ คือ ประการที่ 1 ความคลี่คลายของบทเพลง พบ 5 รูปแบบ ประการที่ 2 การซ้ำทำนอง เพลงทะแยปรากฏการบรรเลงซ้ำที่เป็นปัจเจกโดยเฉพาะในท่อนที่ 2 ประการที่ 3 การปรากฏสำเนียงมอญแท้และสำเนียงมอญแฝง ประการที่ 4 การรับร้องที่มีระเบียบวิธีเฉพาะตน ประการที่ 5 การซ่อนเงื่อนกลุ่มเสียงปัญจมูล ประการที่ 6 การวางลูกตกอย่างมีจุดมุ่งหมาย เพลงทะแยจึงแสดงถึงการประพันธ์เพลงที่แยบยลคมคาย เป็นบทเพลงที่ทรงคุณค่า บรรจุองค์ความรู้ขั้นสูงทางด้านดุริยางคศิลป์

งานวิจัยเรื่อง การสืบทอดวงปี่พาทย์มอญคณะ ศ.บุตรห่านฟ้า มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษา 1) มูลบทและประวัติความเป็นมาของวงปี่พาทย์มอญคณะ ศ.บุตรห่านฟ้า 2) บทเพลงสำคัญและ การสืบทอดของวงปี่พาทย์มอญคณะ ศ.บุตรห่านฟ้า จากการศึกษาพบว่า วงปี่พาทย์มอญคณะ ศ.บุตรห่านฟ้า เดิมชื่อ “ห่านฟ้าดนตรีไทย” ก่อตั้งโดยครูสำเริง พงษ์สมบูรณ์ ชาวจังหวัดนครนายก ผู้มีความเชี่ยวชาญด้านระนาดเอก ต่อมาได้ย้ายมาจัดตั้งวงที่จังหวัดชลบุรี รับแสดงในงานต่าง ๆ เช่น งานศพ งานบวช และงานลิเก โดยถ่ายทอดความรู้ให้ บุตรหลานและลูกศิษย์ จนสามารถประกอบอาชีพนักดนตรี และเกิดการสืบทอดต่อเนื่องถึง 3 ยุค ได้แก่ ยุคของนางพิศ พงษ์สมบูรณ์ นายศุภฤกษ์ พงษ์สมบูรณ์ และนายศรัณย์ พงษ์สมบูรณ์ โดยใช้ชื่อวงว่า “ศ.บุตรห่านฟ้า” ปัจจุบันวงยังคงดำเนินกิจกรรมดนตรีอย่างต่อเนื่อง พร้อมทั้งมีการปรับรูปแบบให้สอดคล้องกับยุคสมัย เช่น การเลือกบทเพลงใหม่ การจัดวางเครื่องดนตรีให้มีความสวยงาม และการตกแต่งด้วยไฟ LED รวมถึงการประชาสัมพันธ์ผ่านช่องทางต่าง ๆ ด้านการสืบทอด ครูสำเริงใช้วิธีถ่ายทอดแบบมุขปาฐะ ต่อมาในยุคนายศุภฤกษ์ มีการแบ่งผู้เรียนเป็น 2 กลุ่ม คือ ผู้เริ่มต้นใหม่และผู้มีพื้นฐาน โดยทุกคนต้องฝากตัวเป็นศิษย์ เพลงสำคัญที่ใช้ในการเรียนการสอนมี 3 เพลง คือ เพลงมอญแม่ครู เพลงมอญแน และเพลงสาธุการ ซึ่งใช้บันไดเสียงทาง เพียงออบนและเพียงออล่าง มีการดำเนินทำนองที่หลากหลาย และสะท้อนเอกลักษณ์ของวงได้อย่างชัดเจน

Strategies For Implementing Improvisational Music Therapy For Adults With Depression : A Scoping Review, Renjie Wu

Depression affects over 280 million people worldwide, and some individuals are resistant to verbal-based therapies, prompting interest in non-pharmacological approaches such as improvisational music therapy (IMT). This scoping review aimed to map and synthesize existing strategies used by music therapists when implementing IMT for adults with depressive symptoms. Following Arksey and O’Malley’s framework, we searched five electronic databases (Scopus, PubMed, APA PsycArticles, ERIC, EBSCOhost) and hand‑searched eight music therapy journals for English‑language studies published between 2000 and 2025. Fourteen studies (2008–2024)—including eight randomized controlled trials, five mixed‑methods investigations, and one qualitative process evaluation—met inclusion criteria. Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) often have difficulties in communication, including expressive and receptive language, social interaction, and nonverbal communication. Music therapy has been found to enhance communicative development in this population. This scoping review aims to summarise music therapy interventions documented in clinical studies that target the improvement of communication skills in children with ASD, and to identify the specific techniques used to address communication-related subskills. Imposing damaging stereotypes on Black women has persisted throughout American culture, specifically within hip-hop. To analyze modern depictions of Black women in hip-hop, I will trace the historical roots of these stereotypes including, but not limited to, angry Black woman, jezebel, sapphire, and how they have persisted in modern media.
