Music Collections In American Public Libraries, Linda B. Fairtile, Karen M. Burke

University Libraries Faculty and Staff Publications

This article presents a broad survey of music collections in public libraries in the United States. Characteristics common to the majority of American public libraries are discussed, including origin, funding, and mission as an educational institution. Using a 1949 survey compiled by Otto Luening, Music Materials and the Public Library, as a basis for comparison, the authors surveyed seven libraries representing one or more of the following communities: small towns, school districts with nationally recognized music education programs, large cities, and locations associated recognizably "American" musical styles (e.g., New Orleans and jazz). The Works Of Giuseppe Verdi: A Consideration Of Its Impact, Linda B. Fairtile

The rationale for preparing a critical edition of Verdi's works is by now well known. The unavailability of printed orchestral scores for some operas, disagreements among performing materials for others, and a proliferation of new scholarship illuminating the complex Verdian source situation all point to the need for a scholarly edition of the complete works of this extremely popular composer. In 1983 the University of Chicago Press and Casa Ricordi began jointly producing scores and other performing materials in a series entitled «The Works of Giuseppe Verdi» («WGV»). Between 1947 and 1979 the Utah Symphony Orchestra was transformed from an obscure, part-time, amateur orchestra into one of the major symphony orchestras in America. By 1947 the orchestra, which had begun as a Works Progress Administration organization, was barely hanging on. The symphony struggled to remain financially solvent, performing only a few concerts per year. Thirty-two years later the Utah Symphony Orchestra was one of the most prestigious musical ensembles in the country— receiving rave reviews from critics around the world, touring extensively, and with more than a hundred albums to its credit. The Effects Of Singing On Blood Pressure In Classically Trained Singers, Kimberly Jaye Broadwater

Blood pressure readings were taken in four normotensive, classically trained singers of varying age and experience. The results show changes during the systolic and diastolic phases of blood pressure measurements while singing. While systolic blood pressure changes were individualized and random, diastolic blood pressure changes generally showed a direct correlation to changes in intrathoracic pressure. Additional research using a larger subject base involving normotensive, hypertensive, and hypotensive populations is warranted.

Contemporary choral music in general and George Rochberg’s in particular present challenges to the conductor well beyond the traditional repertoire including complex harmonies and rhythms, tone clusters, sprechstimme, and unconventional notation. In addition, the conductor must alter usual score preparation techniques and acquire a more detailed knowledge about differences in twentieth century music. He/she must learn the techniques of contemporary music through study in theory and analysis. This thesis discusses the percussion instruments of the Malay communities of Kelantan and the Chams, which is based on patterns of rhythm. This thesis concentrates on analyzing the comparative patterns of rhythm. Two headed drums are referred to for a comparison of patterns of rhythm. The two headed drums in Cham communities are called ginang. These comparative studies will examine the cultural ties between the two communities namely the Malay of Kelantan and the Chams.
