Mark Bjorklund, tenor, presented his graduate voice recital on Wednesday, March 26, 2008 at 8:00 PM in Davis Hall of the Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center on the University of Northern Iowa campus. The recital was given in collaboration with pianist Kirstin Dyer and included selected works from Schwanengesang by Franz Schubert (1797-1828), Winter Words by Benjamin Britten (1913-1976) and the entire set of Cinq Poemes de Baudelaire by Claude Debussy (1862-1918). This abstract discusses musical and historical features of the recital pieces.

Once the unruly upstart, John Zorn is now a MacArthur fellow, whose formidable catalog divides easily into early, middle, and late periods. The early period dates from the mid-1970s to the mid-1980s, when Zorn pioneered the practice of "comprovisation," a term used to describe "the making of new compositions from recordings of improvised material." Ultimately, Zorn's comprovisation blurs the lines between active listener and composer, since both create new works when they impose structure on found sonic material. His early structuralist-modernist approach to comprovisation produced esoteric, often severely pointillist music, and evolved into the game pieces of the late 1970s …

Janeen Jensen. soprano. presented a graduate vocal recital at 6 pm on Wednesday, November 30, 1994 in Russell Hall Auditorium at the University of Northern Iowa. Ms. Jensen was assisted by Marleta Matheson on piano. The recital was presented in partial fulfillment of the requirements for a Masters of Music degree in vocal performance. The repertoire selected represents a variety of challenging pieces with an emphasis on the 20th century. The program began with two of Gioacchino Rossini's art songs which highlighted the Romantic period. Repertory presenting the 20th century includes four of the Siehen Fruhe Lieder by Alban Berg …

The following chapters present an overview of the compositions completed as part of my studies toward the Master of Music degree. They are presented chronologically in the order in which they were composed. The analyses of these works are intended to offer insight into the process of their composition, as well as to draw attention to their important musical elements.
