Experience And Enjoy Therapeutic West African Drumming, Danny S. Daniels
National Youth Advocacy & Resilience Conference
This presentation is designed to introduce the benefits of a therapeutic West African drumming program to educators and mental health professionals. Participants will engage in a basic drumming class where they will experience the academic and socio-emotional benefits of drumming while practicing an African rhythm. How to relate American School Counselor Association (ASCA) standards as well as Georgia Performance Standards (GPS) and Common Core Georgia Performance Standards (CCGPS) will be explained and demonstrated by the presentation facilitators.

I Am My Own Escape, Ross Thomason

I Am My Own Escape is a one-act chamber opera with three characters, scored for soprano, tenor, and baritone voices respectively. The orchestra consists of flute, B flat clarinet, piano, violin, and violoncello, commonly known as the Pierrot ensemble. This work was written for fellow colleagues and students from Illinois State University, premiered on May 5, 2017.
Leitmotifs are employed in this work – the characters each have unique vocal melodies, orchestral gestures, pitch collections, and/or rhythmic motives assigned to them (see figures below for examples). Contemporary or extended techniques such as scratch tones in the strings and harmonics in …

The issue that this master’s thesis addresses is the relationship between music aptitude and academic achievement and its implications for recruiting, retaining, and placing effective music teachers. The purpose of this master’s thesis is to examine the relationship between academic achievement and stabilized music aptitude in high school seniors intending to begin a collegiate music program of study at Long Island University (LIU) Post. Aside from Alberto Ginastera and Astor Piazzolla there are very few known composers from Argentina. Both Ginastera and Piazzolla have written well-known pieces for flute; however, the known flute repertoire from Argentina is small in comparison to other countries. This is due to a number of factors including the high cost of publication in Argentina; because of this composers aren’t able to circulate their works. Pieces are discovered by word of mouth and rarely make it outside of the country. This research aims to collect and expose contemporary flute works by Argentine composers. UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
In January 2017, two UNO Opera Workshop scenes were selected to compete in the National Opera Scenes competition at the National Opera Association Convention in Santa Barbara, California. In this presentation the UNO students that represented UNO at this convention (Elijah Brown, Marcel Daly, Grace Kolbo, and Roni Shelley Perez) will discuss the process of selecting, assembling, and rehearsing scenes with UNO Opera Workshop, the mission of the National Opera Association, and their experiences competing in a national competition.
