A Rhythmic Transcription And Spectral Analysis Of Luciano Berio's Thema (Omaggio A Joyce), Christopher C. Mccardle Apr 2018

A Rhythmic Transcription And Spectral Analysis Of Luciano Berio's Thema (Omaggio A Joyce), Christopher C. Mccardle

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Thema (Omaggio A Joyce), composed by Luciano Berio resides within a tempo of 80 beats per minute. The discovery of a constant tempo allowed for a precise rhythmic transcription to be created which found musical structures including large formal sections, subsections, phrases, rhythmic and melodic motives, layers, and dialogue. Analysis of the rhythmic phrases shows that electroacoustic music can have a controlled structure and that these structures earned Thema an enduring legacy of masterpiece. The transcription provides a road-map to compare and contrast different elements that reoccur throughout Thema. The work was composed with a well thought-out and …

The Foundation Of American Flute Playing Told Through The Innovations Of William Kincaid, Grandfather Of The American Flute School, Kim Abeyta Apr 2018

The Foundation Of American Flute Playing Told Through The Innovations Of William Kincaid, Grandfather Of The American Flute School, Kim Abeyta

Annual Graduate Student Symposium

Flutists have done extensive research into the teaching, techniques and styles of the players that significantly impacted the development of the instrument. While there is ample research into the French Flute School, less is understood about the unique flute playing in the United States. I sought to identify what made American flute playing so exceptional that a separate American Flute School formed. In order to identify and analyze the elements that differentiate the American Flute School, I studied the first well-known and well-respected flutist in the United States still relevant today, William Kincaid. He was taught the techniques of the …

An Annotated Bibliography Of Percussion Works By Stanley Leonard, Kyle Douglas Cherwinski Apr 2018

An Annotated Bibliography Of Percussion Works By Stanley Leonard, Kyle Douglas Cherwinski

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Timpanist, pedagogue, and composer Stanley Leonard has written over one hundred and twenty pieces for percussion, including solos, ensemble pieces, and method books. Several musical techniques are represented in his body of work, including traditional harmony, twelve-tone technique, graphic notation, and improvisation. The purpose of this document is to catalog all of these items into one source as a reference for other percussionists.

The document begins with biographical information, including his impressive performing career, his years as an educator, and the circumstances that led to his composition career. This required interviewing Leonard as well as reading several of the articles …

Mediating Gospel Singing: Audiovisual Recording And The Transformation Of Voice Among The Christian Lisu In Post-2000 Nujiang, China, Ying Diao Apr 2018

Mediating Gospel Singing: Audiovisual Recording And The Transformation Of Voice Among The Christian Lisu In Post-2000 Nujiang, China, Ying Diao

Yale Journal of Music & Religion

The contemporary gospel singing of the Nujiang Lisu in China’s southwestern Yunnan province seems to have been predominated by new media technologies and recorded popular mutgguat ssat music. The prevalence of Christian audiovisual recordings reflects more than a shift in the materiality of Lisu religious practices. Moreover, it speaks to the transformative ways that the Christian Lisu have engaged with technologies for their gospel singing as a practice of religious mediation. New musical styles and expressive forms have been disseminated through recordings and further institutionalized in the worship service and other religious settings. Drawing on a material approach from the …

Sonic Liminalities Of Faith In Sundanese Vocal Music, Sean Williams Apr 2018

Sonic Liminalities Of Faith In Sundanese Vocal Music, Sean Williams

Yale Journal of Music & Religion

As the Sundanese have come to lean on increasingly outward expressions of their Islamic faith – through the use of the Islamic headscarf and other fashion choices, as well as through musical means – it has been the women who have consistently provided the most obvious, outward expressions of West Java’s increasingly public Islamic cultural practices. The aristocratic sung poetry of tembang Sunda has its roots in the imagery and grandeur of the 14th-century Sundanese Hindu kingdom, Pajajaran. Songs that celebrate Pajajaran – the Golden Age of local culture – feature characters not only from the Ramayana, but …

Sounding The Congregational Voice, Marissa Glynias Moore Apr 2018

Sounding The Congregational Voice, Marissa Glynias Moore

Yale Journal of Music & Religion

Congregational singing is a participatory vocal practice undertaken by Christians across a wide range of denominations, yet the specific qualities and active capacities of the congregational voice have yet to be investigated. Drawing on recent musicological and philosophical perspectives on voice, I theorize the congregational voice as an active practice, illuminating its abilities to do something in worship through sound.

Taking Brian Kane’s model of the voice as a circulation of content (logos), sound (echos), and source (topos), I explore how these categories are redefined through an active-based theorization of congregational singing. I argue that …

Paralinguistic Ramification Of Language Performance In Islamic Ritual, Michael Frishkopf Apr 2018

Paralinguistic Ramification Of Language Performance In Islamic Ritual, Michael Frishkopf

Yale Journal of Music & Religion

Across time and space, Islamic ritual practices maintain certain fixed features while adapting to local environments, thereby developing a branching or ramified structure—though political, economic, ideological, or technological factors may cause certain local forms to globalize as well. Such ramification offers a means of interpreting the past as well as a window into religious meaning and the ritual process itself. How does such adaptation take place, what drives it, what is its social-spiritual meaning and impact, what can such a ramified variety across history and place tell us, and where does the essence of such ritual lie? In this paper …

Law, Culture, And The City: Urban Legal Anthropology, The Counterhegemonic Use Of Hegemonic Legal Tools, And The Management Of Intangible Cultural Heritage Spaces Within Toronto's Municipal Legal Frameworks, Sara Gwendolyn Ross

PhD Dissertations

The deep process of revision needed in managing Toronto and Canadas urban intangible cultural heritage not only affects redevelopment decisions and cultural policies at the municipal level, and cultural heritage legislation and regulations at the provincial level, but it also calls for the need to address issues at the federal level, such as correctly acknowledging what terms like heritage value mean when drawn from international cultural heritage legislation and the currently unratified status of the UNESCO Convention on the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage within Canada. Through the application of urban legal anthropology, as well as through a lens …

The Well-Rounded Musician: A New Degree Path For Horn In Jazz, Lauren M. Braud

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The following document will examine the question of whether horn players should be trained in jazz at the collegiate level. Should research prove that teaching horn players to play jazz is a viable degree, how should it be done? How should it be taught? Should classical training be dropped from the curriculum for these students?

A brief history of jazz and horn players who were well known for their performance and study of jazz are discussed. The main research portion contains a survey of current jazz professors and performers. The survey looks into the formal training of these professors and …

Chasing Success: A Cultivated Reality, Anastasia Bevillard Apr 2018

Chasing Success: A Cultivated Reality, Anastasia Bevillard

Honors Projects in Communication

George Gerbner’s cultivation theory claims that people who consume heavy amounts of media are more likely to be influenced by those messages to believe the media reality as opposed to actual reality. Using cultivation theory as the basis for study, I performed a cultivation analysis examining the intersection of mass media and perceptions of success among college-aged young adults living in the United States. The analysis focused on three main points: (1) How mass media perceives and subsequently demonstrates success. (2) The impact of mass media on young adults living in America. (3) What reality of success is cultivated by …

21 Modes was inspired by curiosity. I wanted to know how many scales would result from reordering the half and whole steps of the major scale. As it turns out there are 21. I composed each of the three movements to explore the sonorities of each scale. The first movement is inspired by Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring. The aggressive eighth note string texture became …

In the end, we more than doubled our initial investment and had an awesome time while doing it.

The program’s design is meant to address a profound need for more reciprocal arts-based exchange programs open to highly skilled amateur artists and musicians. With a firm grounding in experiential learning and the seven-continuum transmission model for music education …
