Will Marion Cook: Threads And Themes, Peter M. Lefferts
Will Marion Cook: Threads And Themes, Peter M. Lefferts
Glenn Korff School of Music: Faculty Publications
This document is a supplement to "Chronology and Itinerary of the Career of Will Marion Cook," a 2017 document which is mounted on-line at http://digitalcommons.unl.edu/musicfacpub/66/. It draws out of that resource some material on five themes or threads that are constant elements over Cook's career, concerning the history of African American music and dance, and the promotion of schools and professional troupes for African American musicians and actors. Occasionally there is more information below than in the 2017 document, but readers are cautioned that more often, the older document will have additional detail not simply cut and pasted here. …

Cycle Of 6ths Progression: Annotated Bibliography, Dave Majerus
Cycle Of 6ths Progression: Annotated Bibliography, Dave Majerus
Musicology and Ethnomusicology: Student Scholarship
The Cycle of 6ths is a chord progression that I first heard about from the Jazz guitarist Ted Greene, who was a skilled music theorist and had two books published on guitar harmony and chord progressions. Ted stated that he first learned of the cycle of 6ths from studying J.S. Bach. You may be wondering what a chord cycle of ____ is? A chord cycle is when you move chords in a certain intervallic pattern, eventually the cycle comes back around to the starting chord. For instance, if you move chords in 4ths starting on C you would have the …

Family Members Of Will Marion Cook: Biographical Materials For Immediate Family Members, Peter M. Lefferts
Glenn Korff School of Music: Faculty Publications
This document is a supplement to "Chronology and Itinerary of the Career of Will Marion Cook," a 2017 document which is mounted on-line at http://digitalcommons.unl.edu/musicfacpub/66/. It presupposes some familiarity with the "Chronology and Itinerary," and puts into some kind of order a number of additional research notes, principally drawing upon newspaper and genealogy databases, that amplify the earlier work in certain respects regarding the public lives of his immediate family members. This is not a finished, polished effort; it represents work in progress, complete with repetitions, missing data, and the occasional typographical error. I invite queries, amplifications, and corrections, …

How American Protest Music Has Changed: A Study On The Lives And Music Of Billie Holiday, Nina Simone And Janelle Monae: An Annotated Bibliography, Amy Feeney
Musicology and Ethnomusicology: Student Scholarship
American protest music has been a prominent and acknowledged art form since the 1930’s and has affected many artists both positively and negatively. I aim to examine what about protest music and society’s consumption of it has changed, for better or worse, over the course of its existence. To do so, I will be looking at the lives and works of 3 women who were actively involved in music of protest spanning the existence of the genre, Billie Holiday, Nina Simone and Janelle Monae.
The Effects Of Incorporating Music Into Daily Life On Cognitive Decline, Devlin Deveney
The Effects Of Incorporating Music Into Daily Life On Cognitive Decline, Devlin Deveney
Musicology and Ethnomusicology: Student Scholarship
Dementia currently affects over 35 million people worldwide – a number that is expected to triple by the year 2050 according to the report, “Dementia: a public health priority” by World Health Organization and Alzheimer’s Disease International. Despite the high population of people with dementia, there are currently no cures for the diseases within this category. The aim of this article is to explore the cognitive effects of incorporating music into daily life prior to the onset of dementia and determining whether or not these effects have an impact on age-related cognitive decline. It is hoped that this paper will …

Off Bass: Identifying Critical Gaps In String Bass Education Of Pre-Service Music Educators And Their Consequences For Public Schools, University Of Denver
Off Bass: Identifying Critical Gaps In String Bass Education Of Pre-Service Music Educators And Their Consequences For Public Schools, University Of Denver
Musicology and Ethnomusicology: Student Scholarship
Music Educators find themselves ill prepared and overwhelmed during their first years of teaching for a number of reasons. Due in part to this issue, less priority is placed on string bass education for pre-service teachers. The implications this are a consistent neglect of string bass players and instruments from emerging teachers resulting in loss of students and inventory. Originally noticed in Denver Public Schools, this article will seek to identify this problem as systemic, provide scope, and offer solutions toward correcting it.

Making Amends: How To Move Past The Consequences Of The No Child Left Behind Act On Music Education: Bibliography, University Of Denver
Musicology and Ethnomusicology: Student Scholarship
The purpose of this bibliography is to provide resources for further research into the adverse effects that the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 has had on music education in terms of funding, enrollment, and policy enactment. The ultimate goal of this is to better understand how broad policy can influence individual communities so that practical solutions for overcoming such obstacles may be better solidified and enacted by the public.

Electronic Dance Music: Is It Art? Selected Annotated Bibliography, University Of Denver
Electronic Dance Music: Is It Art? Selected Annotated Bibliography, University Of Denver
Musicology and Ethnomusicology: Student Scholarship
Electronic Dance Music, or EDM, is a genre of music that has enjoyed success. Although it grew out of art music in the twentieth century, EDM is considered popular music. But, is the future of EDM confined only within popular music or is there potential for it to influence or become art music? Or perhaps, is EDM already a form of art regardless of whether or not it is commonly seen as such? In response to such quandaries, this paper will form a method of critique to analyze EDM in comparison to art music. To do so, an overall understanding …
