Reconceptualizing “Music Making:” Music Technology And Freedom In The Age Of Neoliberalism, Cathy Benedict, Jared O'Leary Jan 2019

Reconceptualizing “Music Making:” Music Technology And Freedom In The Age Of Neoliberalism, Cathy Benedict, Jared O'Leary

Music Education Publications

Recent initiatives by for-profit corporations and funding measures instituted by governments intend to support the preparation of students for careers in computer science and technology. Although such initiatives and measures can indeed increase opportunities for students’ engagement with computer science and technology in K-12 schools, we question whose needs are being served, for what purposes, and at what cost. In particular, we ask whether music educators might be complicit in advancing technology that subordinates human needs—specifically students’ interests in making music in their own creative ways—to modes of production that benefit certain dominant commercial interests in society. After discussing how …

Religious Music In Public School Choir: Attitudes, Practices, And Experiences, Landon R. Lamontagne Jan 2019

Religious Music In Public School Choir: Attitudes, Practices, And Experiences, Landon R. Lamontagne

ETD Archive

A large portion of the choral music canon is sacred or religious in nature because the history of choral singing is in large part due to its importance in the development of the Christian church. Many public school choir teachers include sacred or religious music as a part of their repertoire because of its historic, musical and educational value. The fact that religious songs and sacred texts are often included in public school choir curricula has raised numerous philosophical and legal questions over the past several decades, although research regarding public school choir curriculum and religion is limited. The purpose …

The Passion Of Love Or The Love Of Passion In A-Minor, Brendan Whitt Jan 2019

The Passion Of Love Or The Love Of Passion In A-Minor, Brendan Whitt

ETD Archive

A-Minor is an one-act play that examines the relationship between a Black artist and the predominantly white society and industry he must assimilate into in order to be considered a success. The main character Jacque Bonnet is used as a vessel to interpret the life and career of Joseph Bologne Chevalier de St. George. Despite Bonnet and Bologne being from different eras (Bologne mid to late 1700’s, Bonnet Mid 1800’s) I used Bonnet as a device to investigate the lesser explored life of Bologne. By creating a meta-gothic world for Jacque Bonnet to exist in, the crowd can watch his …

Experiences Of Music Therapy Junior Faculty Members: A Narrative Exploration, Carol A. Olszewski Jan 2019

Experiences Of Music Therapy Junior Faculty Members: A Narrative Exploration, Carol A. Olszewski

ETD Archive

Very few music therapists have educational background or training to be proficient at teaching at institutions of higher education. With only minimal (if any) training in andragogy and in research methodology, music therapy junior faculty (MTJF) members find themselves novice academics in the highly structured, competitive environment of the academy. In order for music therapists to be successful in their career change from clinical work to the academy, improvements and modifications to the education of future music therapy professors are likely, but data are necessary to intimate and to guide those changes. This narrative research study explored the lived experiences …

A Survey Of Music Teachers’ Working Conditions, David N. Sanderson, Timothy D. Buzza, Christopher S. Jannings, Kangwon Kim, Bryan D. Maurer, Jonathan Soderberg-Chase

Research & Issues in Music Education

For this study the researchers examined music teacher responses to survey items pertaining to their working conditions. Participants reported their satisfaction about factors related to music program funding, facilities, workload, professional development, and school culture. Responses were analyzed to detect possible differences in responses due to demographic factors of teachers, schools, and teaching assignments. Initial findings indicated that teachers were generally satisfied with their all aspects of their working conditions with the exception of professional development. A MANOVA was conducted to determine if there were any significant differences in responses based on participant demographics. While our study found no disparities …

Shush: A Creative (Re)Construction, Kathleen Spring Jan 2019

Shush: A Creative (Re)Construction, Kathleen Spring

Faculty & Staff Publications

Shush: A Creative (Re)Construction stems from work conducted during a sabbatical in fall 2017. The audio piece, Shush Me Awake, is a composition that explores the shush as a performative act. The accompanying framing essay uses an autoethnographic approach to provide a contextualized look at the composition process for this piece, while simultaneously situating it within existing scholarship in library and information studies on the image of the librarian and stereotypes. The composer notes provide additional technical details about the audio piece itself.

New Mexico Composers Archive, Unm Digital Initiatives & Scholarly Communication

Love in the Archives 2019

Merging the digital with the physical, the New Mexico Composers' Archive (MSS 904 BC) was featured on screen and in print during Love in the Archives. Begun in 1973 by then-Dean of Libraries Dr. John Harvey, the collection has been partially digitized. Exhibit-goers were able to interact with the digital and physical objects and draw their own conclusions about the pros and cons of each format. A few pieces were newly digitized for the exhibit and they are included here.

One of the significant issues in the music supply chain today is the lack of consistent, complete and authoritative information or metadata regarding the creation of a given musical work. In many cases multiple entities in the music supply chain have each created their own version of the metadata for a musical work, often by manually re-entering the same information or through scraping data from other sites. In such cases, the effort to synchronize or to correct the information becomes manually laborious and error-prone. Furthermore, confidential information regarding the legal ownership of the musical work is often commingled in the …

“Blaspheming Beethoven?”: The Altered Bach Motive In Vaughan Williams’S Fourth Symphony, Ryan M. Ross Jan 2019

“Blaspheming Beethoven?”: The Altered Bach Motive In Vaughan Williams’S Fourth Symphony, Ryan M. Ross

CoE Publications

Vaughan Williams’s Fourth Symphony (1934) has elicited much discussion regarding its aesthetic nature and sources of inspiration. Early critics associated the work’s dissonances with a concession to continental European musical modernism, or with a depiction of the political tensions of 1930s Europe. More recent commentaries have noted its references to Beethoven, one of which the composer admitted to in print. These commentators have argued either that these references constitute a continuation of the Beethovenian tradition in the twentieth century, or that they present a critique of the German composer. This essay adds a new argument in favor of the latter …

Escape From The East, Martha Marie Failinger Jan 2019

Escape From The East, Martha Marie Failinger

Children's Book Writing and Illustrating (MFA) Theses

Although a plethora of documentaries, movies, and literature surrounding the trauma of

World War II and its aftermath exist, a relative paucity comes from the German people – perhaps

due to the collective guilt and shame that surrounded the horrors of the Holocaust.

This thesis project is a middle school graphic novel memoir based on a true story of a German boy (pseudonym: Hans) during the years 1940 to 1949. Hans becomes a member of the prestigious St. Thomas Boys Choir in Leipzig and finds that Bach’s music, which he is constantly singing, helps to keep his soul alive in …

Gender And Singing In The American Classroom, Amanda Franklin Jan 2019

Gender And Singing In The American Classroom, Amanda Franklin

Honors Program Theses

This thesis was written to uncover the history of gender and choral singing, draw connections between gender and music, analyze current student perspectives regarding singing in the American classroom, and offer suggestions for educators in present-day chorus classes. This thesis is most relevant for music educators who seek a more-gender balanced program, but the implications of this research can be applied to gender in education as a whole.

"Fuck Tha Police": The Poetry And Politics Of N.W.A., Sandra Young Jan 2019

"Fuck Tha Police": The Poetry And Politics Of N.W.A., Sandra Young

English Faculty Publications

No one withdrew after syllabus day. In the semester I piloted a first-year seminar course, the “Rhetoric of Protest Songs,” on the first day of class, I introduced the topic of the class and myself. However, before I gave students the syllabi, I confessed that I knew little about music. I told them I Googled and YouTubed, and read our text to gain knowledge about protest songs. I told them the “Rhetoric of Protest Songs” was a writing class, and rhetoric means persuasion. “In this class, you’ll write academic essays about protest songs. And we’ll listen to some music.”

My …

Using Music Therapy As An Adjunct To Pharmacologic Therapies For Chronic Pain, Andrea L. Rosenberg Jan 2019

Using Music Therapy As An Adjunct To Pharmacologic Therapies For Chronic Pain, Andrea L. Rosenberg

Theses and Graduate Projects

Chronic pain affects more than 1 in 4 individuals in the United States. Many patients are being prescribed opioids to manage this pain, leading to an immense problem involving addiction, overdoses, and preventable deaths. Music therapy has been shown to provide “music analgesia,” improving anxiety, depression, and mobility problems associated with chronic pain conditions. The most benefit was seen when the music was known to the patient, the patient had a role in choosing the music, and when the music had a beat of less than 120 beats per minute. These promising results include a wide variety of chronic pain …

The Experience Of Music Therapy During The Weaning Process Of Patients Receiving Invasive Mechanical Ventilation, Stephanie M. Morris Jan 2019

The Experience Of Music Therapy During The Weaning Process Of Patients Receiving Invasive Mechanical Ventilation, Stephanie M. Morris

Theses and Graduate Projects

Mechanical ventilation (MV) is a medical intervention used to assist the respiratory function of someone who is medically compromised. Patients need to wean from the ventilator in order to resume breathing on their own. A spontaneous breathing trial (SBT) is used to determine one’s readiness to be liberated from the ventilator. Music therapy is the use of music interventions, facilitated by a board-certified music therapist, to address patient-specific goals within a therapeutic relationship. Music therapists working in an intensive care unit (ICU) may focus their clinical work to address the stressors, fears, and medical complications associated with vent weaning. The …

The Ballads Of Marvin Gaye, Andrew Flory Jan 2019

The Ballads Of Marvin Gaye, Andrew Flory

Music Faculty Work

This article focuses on Marvin Gaye’s involvement with music related to the “middle of the road” (MOR) market within the American music business between 1961 and 1979. From 1961 to 1966, in addition to his work as a teen idol, Gaye performed regularly in supper clubs, released four albums of standards material, and recorded dozens of other related songs that were eventually shelved. In a fascinating turn, he worked extensively on a series of unreleased tracks between 1967 and 1979, using experimental techniques to revise, reinterpret, and recompose melodies over already completed backing music. Gaye’s interest in ballads connects to …

Results indicate that a greater degree of adhering to both traditional and American culture predict higher career outcomes, including culture and gender interactions.

The Bridge To Mainstream Music-Latin Pop Crossing Over Into Mainstream Music In The United States, Selena Fregoso Jan 2019

The Bridge To Mainstream Music-Latin Pop Crossing Over Into Mainstream Music In The United States, Selena Fregoso

Whittier Scholars Program

Latin Pop within mainstream music has become a trend in the United States that has allowed for Spanish and English to coexist in one track. The causes of the emergence of this trend are the Latino population growth, streaming platforms, and Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee’s son “Despacito. This trend is impacting the music industry’s future by allowing artists to reach more people and expand their audience. The trend also implements Latino culture in American culture by creating unity between fans from different ethnic and cultural backgrounds. By looking at Latino population growth, Spotify streaming service, and music rankings through …

Covert Singing In Anticipatory Auditory Imagery, Tim A. Pruitt, Andrea R. Halpern, P. Q. Pfordresher Jan 2019

Covert Singing In Anticipatory Auditory Imagery, Tim A. Pruitt, Andrea R. Halpern, P. Q. Pfordresher

Faculty Journal Articles

To date, several fMRI studies reveal activation in motor planning areas during musical auditory imagery. We addressed whether such activations may give rise to peripheral motor activity, termed subvocalization or covert singing, using surface electromyography. sensors placed on extrinsic laryngeal muscles, facial muscles, and a control site on the bicep measured muscle activity during auditory imagery that preceded singing, as well as during the completion of a visual imagery task. Greater activation was found in laryngeal and lip muscles for auditory than for visual imagery tasks, whereas no differences across tasks were found for other sensors. Furthermore, less accurate singers …

The Use Of Deep Learning Distributed Representations In The Identification Of Abusive Text, Susan Mckeever, Hao Chen, Sarah Jane Delany Jan 2019

The Use Of Deep Learning Distributed Representations In The Identification Of Abusive Text, Susan Mckeever, Hao Chen, Sarah Jane Delany

Conference papers

The selection of optimal feature representations is a critical step in the use of machine learning in text classification. Traditional features (e.g. bag of words and n-grams) have dominated for decades, but in the past five years, the use of learned distributed representations has become increasingly common. In this paper, we summarise and present a categorisation of the stateof-the-art distributed representation techniques, including word and sentence embedding models. We carry out an empirical analysis of the performance of the various feature representations using the scenario of detecting abusive comments. We compare classification accuracies across a range of off-the-shelf embedding models …

A Hybrid Process Mining Framework For Automated Simulation Modelling For Healthcare, Susan Mckeever, Waleed Abo Hamad, Mohammed Mesabbah

Conference papers

Advances in data and process mining algorithms combined with the availability of sophisticated information systems have created an encouraging environment for innovations in simulation modelling. Researchers have investigated the integration between such algorithms and business process modelling to facilitate the automation of building simulation models. These endeavors have resulted in a prototype termed Auto Simulation Model Builder (ASMB) for DES models. However, this prototype has limitations that undermine applying it on complex systems. This paper presents an extension of the ASMB framework previously developed by authors adopted for healthcare systems. The proposed framework offers a comprehensive solution for resources handling …

Electric Guitar, John A. Drobnicki Jan 2019

Electric Guitar, John A. Drobnicki

Publications and Research

Hollow-body guitars could not be heard over other instruments in swing bands, so pick-ups were added to the guitars, which often resulted in feedback and distortion. This led to the development of solid-body electric guitars which needed amplification in order to be heard.

Distillation Of Sound: Dub In Jamaica And The Creation Of Culture, Eric J. Abbey Jan 2019

Distillation Of Sound: Dub In Jamaica And The Creation Of Culture, Eric J. Abbey

Wayne State University Dissertations

In the early 1970s, the culture of Jamaica shifted politically and culturally with the introduction of the mixing board in music. This writing centers on the ways in which technology created a culture of dub reggae that has gone on to affect the world. The major albums and engineers that influenced this change are the focus here. By doing so, we can view how large changes in technology affected the society of Jamaica and how this led to significant cultural development. With Raymond Williams’ definition of culture and Thomas Vendrys’ structure of Dub music, the culture is defined, furthered, and …
