"Hevest Up The Dore": Overcoming Obstacles To Meaning In Chaucer's Miller's Tale, David Fuller Jan 1988

"Hevest Up The Dore": Overcoming Obstacles To Meaning In Chaucer's Miller's Tale, David Fuller

Quidditas

The tantalizing obliquity E. M. W. Tillyard observes in the Miller's Tale cannot be avoided if we look beyond the popular humor and artistry of the structured plot. It is difficult to accept the Miller's joke as merely Chaucer's joke, especially when Chaucer includes frequent and indeed ambiguous references to "Goddes pryvetee" and repeated remarks that seriousness and harm have been turned into a joke.

A Document Of Humanist Education: Erasmus's Commentary On The Disticha Catonis, Louis A. Perraud Jan 1988

A Document Of Humanist Education: Erasmus's Commentary On The Disticha Catonis, Louis A. Perraud

Quidditas

The part the Disticha (or Dicta) Catonis played in Erasmus's caareer is only one event in the work's long and honorable history. The Cato was composed by an anonymous author during the later Roman principate. As presented in the oldest manuscripts, the work consists of prose sententiae followed by fouor books of hexameter couplets. The whole is ornamented with a prose preface, and the second, third, and fourth books of hexameters have verse prologues of ten, four, and four lines respectively. The "Cato" to whom the work is attributed is probably either that redoubtable critic of Roman morals, Cato …

The Harrowing Of Peter: An Extrabiblical Encounter Between Christ And Peter, Gary D. Schmidt Jan 1988

The Harrowing Of Peter: An Extrabiblical Encounter Between Christ And Peter, Gary D. Schmidt

Quidditas

Of all the events surrounding the life of Christ, none sees more elaboration and embellishment during the Middle Ages than the Passion. Many of these familiar stories take their place in prayer book miniatures, preacher's manuals, and on the stage. The image on Veronica's veil, the dream of Pilate's wife, the healing of the blind Longinus, the ominous events preceding the harrowing–all show a tendency to surround the simple yet dramatic story of Christ's Passion with corresponding incidents that reflect aspects of the meaning of the Passion and at the same tme aare themselves informed by that Passion.

George Eliot And Friendship The Toast To The Immortal Memory, Ina Taylor Nov 1987

George Eliot And Friendship The Toast To The Immortal Memory, Ina Taylor

The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375

Before going on to my chosen subject I thought you might like to hear a little about this new biography of George Eliot. You could indeed be forgiven for saying, 'Not another biography of George Eliot'. A new study must come out most years, either in this country or in America and I would be the first to admit that the definitive biography by Gordon Haight will not be superseded for some time. So what more is there to say about the great lady?

Well, after reading Haight and others, I was struck by the fact that of George Eliot's …

Westminster Abbey Wreather Abbey Wreath-Laying, John Kane Jun 1987

Westminster Abbey Wreather Abbey Wreath-Laying, John Kane

The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375

We are here today to pay our respects and do homage to the memory of a great artist and an astonishing woman. Although she died over a hundred years ago, I know that to many members of the George Eliot Fellowship and to readers around the world, she is still our contemporary and to some, she is more vibrant and alive than many living authors. But what if she really were alive today? What if we were actually here not to lay a wreath but to meet the woman herself. I for one would approach the event with some ambivalence. …

The Evolution Of The Literary Fish, Sharon R. Wachter Jun 1987

The Evolution Of The Literary Fish, Sharon R. Wachter

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Fish symbolism, which is mythologically linked with fertility gods in many instances, changes with man's changing concept of himself and his relationship to the universe. Christians, who perceive their God as asexual, have divided fish symbolism into two mutually exclusive categories: religious symbolism, which deals solely with things divine, and secular symbolism, which deals solely with things sexual. This division survives until well into the twentieth century. An examination of various poets from the last hundred years shows a trend to focus on images traditionally associated with God in order to show divine and religious failure in dealing with the …

A Newly Purchased Letter, T. Clifford Allbutt Feb 1987

A Newly Purchased Letter, T. Clifford Allbutt

The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375

The following letter has recently been purchased by Nuneaton Museum and Art Gallery and its pubIication here (as far as we are aware, for the first time) is with the Curator's kind permission. Unfortunately, no year is shown with the date, neither is the correspondent addressed in any other way than by 'My dear Sir', so it has been impossible to discover to whom it was written. All one can say is that it was penned sometime between 1890 (the date of publication of Oscar Browning's Life of George Eliot) and 1925 when Sir Thomas Clifford Allbutt, the writer of …

Gulled Into An "I"-Word, Or Much Ado About A Pronoun, D'Orsay W. Pearson Jan 1987

Gulled Into An "I"-Word, Or Much Ado About A Pronoun, D'Orsay W. Pearson

Quidditas

Despite the warning of the editors of the 1975 New Arden Twelfth Night the M.O.A.I. sequence of Maria's riddle for Malvolio is "a sequence of letters expressly designed to make Malvolio interpret them as he does, thus prolonging the comic scene," and that "attempts to wring further meaning from them are misplaced" (Lothiam and Craik 68), there is a strong probability that the letters, rather than being a meaningless sequence, were intended by Shakespeare as a fairly simple orthographic joke—one which expands Malvolio's characterization as a socially ambitious closet sybarite, deficient in a social accomplishment expected of those who would …

Carmelite Propaganda In A Fifteenth-Century French Gradual Fragment, John B. Friedman Jan 1987

Carmelite Propaganda In A Fifteenth-Century French Gradual Fragment, John B. Friedman

Quidditas

The late Middle Ages was a difficult period for the mendicant orders. Many of their claims to be the "New Apostles," with special efficacy in the confessional, the pulpit, and the classroom—as Penn Szittya has recently shown—were under sharp attack. Though less visible as teachers and preachers than the Dominicans and Franciscans, the Carmelites were also the victims of anti-mendicant hostility from an early period. Furthermore, they were disliked by the other orders because they claimed superiority be reason of alleged great antiquity and the special patronage of the Virgin, for Carmelite legend holds that the Old Testament prophets Elijah …

Women And Marriage In The Medieval Spanish Epic, Marjorie Ratcliffe Jan 1987

Women And Marriage In The Medieval Spanish Epic, Marjorie Ratcliffe

Quidditas

Medieval Spanish literature offers only three extant epic texts, Roncesvalles, the Cantar de Mio Cid and the Mocedades de Rodrigo. Knowledge of the Spanish heroic genre has been further extended by considering the thirteenth-century Poema de Fernán González, a reworking of a much earlier poem, as well as the similarly re-elaborated fragments of the stories of Rodrigo, the last Visigothic monarch; of Bernardo del Carpio; of the seven sons of Salas; of the traitorous countess; of prince García and the Cantar de Sancho Il y el cerco de Zamora. These texts will all be considered in …

The Seven Ages Of Pericles, Cynthia Marshall Jan 1987

The Seven Ages Of Pericles, Cynthia Marshall

Quidditas

Pericles, swept along by the wave of interest in Shakespeare's romances, has lately received its due share of critical and theatrical attention, but it remains something of a bastard child. Pericles was originally labelled a "problem" because oof the textual controversy—exclusion from the 1623 folio, evidence of joint authorship—and the label sticks because of the common complaint that the play somehow feels different from the other plays in the canon. Uneven in style and random in structure, it seems almost to provoke disengagement. It actively resists expectations of casual plot and frustrates the urge to identify with characters on …
