Garnerings 譯藪
Garnerings goes to press at a highly significant period in the history of the College. We look forward to a decision by Government in June or July which will put the College under the auspices of the Universities and Polytechnics Grants Committee as degree awarding institution, so that we will be able to play our part in the Government's far reaching plans to make first degree courses available to a much larger number of students in Hong Kong. The College hopes that Government will give us the land and the funds which will enable us to put up new buildings …

Igbo Names In The Nominal Roll Of Amelié, An Early 19th Century Slave Ship From Martinique: Reconstructions, Interpretations And Inferences, Chukwuma Azuonye
Africana Studies Faculty Publication Series
The names discussed in the present paper come from the nominal roll of “212 Africans, all Ibos, who constituted the clandestine freight of Amelié, a slave-ship commissioned at Saint-Pierre, Martinique, and captured by the royal corvettee, Sapho, on February 8, 1822, in the Caribbean Sea.” The list was forwarded to me as far back as 1985 through Abiola Irele (then of the University of Ibadan), at the instance of the great Martinique cultural nationalist poet, Aimé Cesaire (1913–2008), by Mme Thesée, a French scholar who was then completing a study of the secret passage of this particular group of slaves. …
The Story In Kierkegaard And Newman, Laura Gill
The Story In Kierkegaard And Newman, Laura Gill
Anthós Journal (1990-1996)
Kierkegaard and Newman might seem strange bedfellows, but both draw on stories from the Bible to inform their moral and ethical arguments. This paper shows how both philosophers use storylines and figures from the Bible to "gain a better understanding of the concept of faith for themselves as well as others." While both philosophers use the storylines to differing ends, this paper argues that the understanding of both philosophies is enhanced by viewing them both through this particular lens.
"For Though It Swam In France, It Might Have Sunk In England": A Comparison Of John Vanbrugh’S The Confederacy With Its French Source, Les Bourgeoises À La Mode, Diane T. Harris
Masters Theses
In the summer of 1705, as Sir John Vanbrugh was casting about for dramatic source material which might play successfully at the new Haymarket theatre, he rediscovered Florent Dancourt's Les Bourgeoises à la Mode and, in the manner of Restoration theatre playwrights, created an adapted version in many respects quite different from the original. This adaptation, known as The Confederacy, is considered by many Vanbrugh scholars to be one of the English author's best works.
This paper is essentially a comparative study of the two plays. It begins with a plot summary of the play Vanbrugh used as the …

Universal Writing Systems: Philosophical Languages And Humanist Rhetoric In Seventeenth-Century England, Grant M. Boswell
Universal Writing Systems: Philosophical Languages And Humanist Rhetoric In Seventeenth-Century England, Grant M. Boswell
Quidditas
The early Renaissance, like the Hellenic Age and the Golden Age of Roman literature, was epistemologically oriented to the discursory practices of rhetoric rather than to the rational methods of philosophy. This preference resulted from the widespread adoption of linguistic presuppositions upon which humanist rhetoric is based. By the end of the seventeenth century, however, the underlying principles of humanism had been replaced. The discursory competence that humanism had sought to develop had become devalued, and in its place other epistemological systems had arisen. Francis Bacon, the Royal Society, René Descartes, Isaac Newton, and John Locke all offered epistemological principles …

A 'Meta-Constructive' Reading Of Ursula K. Le Guin's The Hand Of Darkness, Annette M. Matthews
A 'Meta-Constructive' Reading Of Ursula K. Le Guin's The Hand Of Darkness, Annette M. Matthews
Anthós Journal (1990-1996)
Ursula K. le Guin’s fascinating and controversial novel, The Left Hand of Darkness, constructs meaning in multiple ways and at multiple levels. Using Todorov’s theory of “Reading as Construction,” this paper posits that le Guin’s novel requires the reader to be aware of their own reading in order to understand the text. The paper traces the idea of construction throughout the novel and ultimately suggests that the novel uses its differing points of view to force the reader to construct for themselves in order to understand the construction of the novel and its characters.

George Eliot Birthday Luncheon: The Toast To The Immortal Memory- 1989, Gabriel Woolf
The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375
Our invitation to Gabriel Woolf to propose the Toast on this annual occasion was given so that we could say thank you to him for 20 years of work on our behalf in promoting George Eliot in his own unique way. In proposing the Toast, he began by telling us about his own introduction to George Eliot. He was doing his National Service in the R.A.F. and was particularly lonely in an alien situation with people with whom he had little or nothing in common. He remembers vividly taking Romola down from an R.A.F. library shelf and being instantly captured …

Essays For Undergraduate Liberal Arts Education, Hugo G. Walter
Institute for the Humanities Theses
The purpose of this creative project is to develop an anthology of significant essays for undergraduate liberal arts education. Each essay is preceded by an introduction about the author and the importance of his work. Wreath-Laying In The George Eliot Memorial Gardens, Nuneaton- 1989, Beryl Kerby
The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375
I felt greatly honoured when I was invited to lay the Fellowship's wreath at today's ceremony. It was much later, when considering this address, that I realised I had studied none of George Eliot's works and had read very few.
However, I did know something of her. My parents and their friends all seem to have been involved, in some way, with the George Eliot Centenary celebrations in 1919 and very early on I was given a copy of Scenes of Clerical Life. How easy it is at Arbury Hall to look at the painting of Sir Roger Newdigate but …

The Epic Of Ezra Pound: A Modern Poet's Quest In China's Antiquity, Sun Hong
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Although the influence of the Chinese culture on Ezra Pound has long been recognized in the study of his Cantos, the question of whether his work should be regarded as a "transmission" or an "invention" requires a more substantial consideration of both his work and the Chinese tradition. This thesis attempts to supply an evidence to T. s. Eliot's answer to the question about Pound's status regarding the Chinese culture--namely, that Pound was "the inventor of the Chinese poetry for our times." To do so three features of the Cantos are considered: the philosophy of Confucius, particularly the text Da …

Treasurer's Report- A.G.M.
The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375
I agreed to take over the post of Treasurer to the George Eliot Fellowship two years ago, and have thoroughly enjoyed this experience and I have learned a great deal about the art of book-keeping.
However, my commitments at school, in an ever changing world of education, are such that I felt that I must hand over the treasurer's position to someone who, hopefully, has a little more time to look after your accounts.
You will see from the Statement of Income and Expenditure that the finances of the Fellowship are in a satisfactory position.

Preface And Introductory Materials To Approaches To Teaching Cather’S My Ántonia, Susan J. Rosowski
Department of English: Faculty Publications
The aim of this volume is to provide background and ideas others have found most helpful in teaching My Antonia. The portion presented here describes Cather's role in preparing the text and supervising the physical design of My Antonia, and reviews other writing by Cather relevant to My Antonia, as well as biographical studies and criticism recommended most often by instructors who teach it. It includes also a selective introduction to materials recommended for instructors' libraries: reference works on Cather, general background, biographical studies, and critical commentary. Finally, it surveys aids to teaching: pedagogical articles and non-print …
Intertextuality In The Anglo-Norman Lyric, Carol J. Harvey
Intertextuality In The Anglo-Norman Lyric, Carol J. Harvey
Quidditas
The rhetorical formulae that permeate the poetry of the Middle Ages are not always used in a conventional or consistent manner. On the fringes of the main literary movements are works that raise doubts as to the very nature of medieval poetics. Some texts challenge accepted criteria with respect to genre, tone, or interpretation; others appear unfamiliar and heterogeneous in comparison with accepted poetic concepts; still others use the language and imagery of established poetics as a polemic strategy. Such problematic texts are found among the lyric poems composed in England during the Anglo-Norman era, particularly among the macaronics. These …

Treasonous Criticisms Of Henry Iv: The Loyal Poet Of Richard The Redeless And Mum And The Sothsegger, Diane A. Facinelli
Quidditas
The merit of the Middle English alliterative poems Richard the Redelesss and Mum and the Sothsegger can be judged accurately only if they are approached as individual compositions. Ever since the Early English Text Society published the Mabel Day and Robert Steele edition of Mum and the Sothsegger in 1936, most scholars have uncritically accepted the single-poem theory these editors posited, regardless of how this adversely affected their analyses of the works. The argument for regarding Richard and Mum as fragments of one composition, begun in 1299 and finished sometime between 1403 and 1406, is, however, far less conclusive than …

Sir Thomas Heneage Of Hainton: A Henrician Gentleman, Narasingha P. Sil
Quidditas
The obscurity of Sir Thomas Heneage (c. 1480-1553) in early Tudor history presents a sharp contrast to the relative prominence of his nephew and namesake who served Queen Elizabeth as the vice-chamberlain of her household. Sir Thomas Heneage the Younger (c. 1532-1595), who left a fuller record of his activities, has naturally been given a more extensive treatment in the Dictionary of National Biography, which devotes less than half a column to the senior Heneage. The uncle can further boast of one printed page in Rev. Mr. Oates's account of the Heneage family. One of his letters was published …

Emergence From The Dark: Female Epistolary Literature In The Middle Ages, Albrecht Classen
Quidditas
German medieval literary scholarship has always been dominated by male-oriented views, since research in this field has been traditionally carried out by men. Because of this, the role of women in medieval literature has been of only marginal interest to most scholars. Recent publications, however, have changed this situation, since an increasing number of women scholars have not only acquired a profile in medieval literary research but have also focused particularly on the life and culture of women in the Middle Ages. Thus the image of the medieval woman is slowly emerging from the dark, although most of our knowledge …
